In its third version, the iPhone SE still appears at first glance to sit comfortably in the same place in the catalog – albeit with an increase of $30 in price.

With iPhone SE, you know what you’re getting. This is because they rely on Apple using older models of components, cases and other elements to reduce development and production costs. At least from the outside, Apple has taken this approach to heart.
IPhone SE Gen 3 uses the same aluminum and glass aerospace design as its predecessor. Same buttons, same corners, same switch, same IP67 rating.
You will also get the same Retina HD display with a diagonal of 4.7 inches, an LCD panel with a resolution of 1,334 x 750 pixels and a pixel density of 326ppi. That’s true of the contrast ratio of 1,400:1, maximum brightness of 625 nits, Wide Color (P3) support, True Tone and Haptic Touch.
There is no change to an edge-to-edge display as you would see on other iPhone models. It’s a re-use of an established display that will be welcome to those who don’t necessarily need as much of a screen.

Of course, as part of this adherence to the same design as the previous generation, you have the same Home button on the front display. This also means that Touch ID is still in use. In a climate where face masks are still used, it’s a decent form of biometric security.
At the back is the same camera with a compact round bump and flash. Finally, the base still has a reliable Lightning port.
The dimensions are the same at 5.45 inches by 2.65 inches and 0.29 inches thick. Of course, Apple made it lighter at 5.09 ounces, but that’s not a huge savings in the long run.
Anyone looking at the iPhone SE won’t be able to tell from the outside whether it’s a second-generation or third-generation model. Not at all.

The 2022 iPhone SE starts at $429, but carriers are offering aggressive incentives on the low-cost, 5G-enabled smartphone.
You also can’t rely on model-specific colors to tell the difference between generations. Apart from the usual Red (PRODUCT) variant, Apple has changed the other two colors only minimally.
There is a slight tonal change between the ‘Midnight’ and ‘Starlight’ colors for the third generation versus the ‘black’ and ‘white’ of the second, but not enough to be radically recognisable. It’s similar to the change we saw with the Apple Watch.
If there’s any question that this is just an internal update, then the only external changes to the tougher glass design from the second generation iPhone SE and two slightly tweaked color variants should clear up any doubt.

As you would expect for the iPhone SE launch, Apple has combined the information of its latest iPhones. For the third generation version, that means it has the same A15 Bionic as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro line.

The new phone has the same six-core CPU arrangement of two performance cores and four efficiency cores, but performs better than ever. The GPU is still a quad-core affair, but it has also received some improvements from Apple.

The camera system has not been improved in terms of specifications, with a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera on the back with f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, 5x digital zoom and True Tone flash.
However, the A15’s new image signal processor can help reduce noise in video and for low-light images. ISP also improves white balance, giving subjects a better skin tone.
As before, you have Portrait Mode with controllable bokeh depth, Portrait Lighting with six effects to use, and Smart HDR. Users can now take advantage of Smart HDR 4 and Photo Styles. The latter gives you more options for styling your photo.

And, the improvements also help Facetime and selfie photography. The FaceTime HD camera can still take 7-megapixel photos and has an f/2.2 aperture, but it also gains Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photo Styles.
Image changes extend to video as well. Now you get 4K video recording at 60 fps. There’s also 1080p Slo-mo at 240fps, OIS, 3x digital zoom and stereo recording with the new iPhone SE.
Video up front is still 1080p 30fps at maximum, but it also benefits from processing improvements.
A key marketing point of Apple’s iPhone SE is that it can now offer 5G connectivity. Adding 5G support to the iPhone SE is a no-brainer for Apple.

Your mileage may vary on the rollout of 5G wherever you currently live and work, but it’s certainly on the way for most people.
Instead of supporting the extended and resistive sub-6GHz bands and the fast mmWave bands, Apple instead only includes support for the sub-6Ghz bands. Anyone expecting amazing cellular speeds from mmWave in wide rollout cities won’t see that with this rollout.
Power users who are more likely to want those speeds will use models with mmWave support, not the iPhone SE. For users with more pedestrian needs, it may be disappointing not to have this option, but being able to use 5G is still nice.

If you’re not yet served by 5G, the third-generation iPhone SE still supports ultra-fast LTE Advanced.
Although not an expected change for the model, Apple continues to offer dual SIM support, combining nano-SIM with eSIM.
As for other wireless connectivity options, Apple has not changed the existing Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 or NFC for Apple Pay transactions. They are all quite fast and up to date considering the price range.
There is no real change in power with the iPhone SE, which is a little disappointing. There is wireless charging, but Apple hasn’t switched to using MagSafe, so you can’t take advantage of all the accessories, chargers, or the higher 7.5W charging limit.

For some tech-savvy users, 64GB may be restrictive, but it doesn’t seem like much of a limitation for the average user. While 128GB is more practical for mid to advanced users, modern smartphone usage keeps the pressure on for smartphones to grow.
In the third generation model, Apple did just that by adding an extra dimension. You can still get 64GB or 128GB, but if your budget is a bit higher, 256GB is now an option.

However, these changes add up and have resulted in an effective price increase of $30 overall.
The 64GB model costs $429, up from $399 for the last generation. At 128GB, the price jumps to $479, and $579 will get you the 256GB capacity.
