The company is now a leader in 5G coverage and is starting to gain the upper hand in terms of performance, although it still faces stiff competition from Vodafone and – especially – EE. Interestingly, the network is reported to be in early talks about a merger with Vodafone, but given the glacial pace at which these things are progressing, you probably won’t see any impact for a year or more.
Is this reflected in better results in this year’s Mobile Network Awards Expert Reviews survey? Well, Three still needs to work on its customer service, but its value ratings are improving. Perhaps most importantly, only 67% of the three subscribers we spoke to would recommend the network to a friend; a better result than Virgin Mobile (61%) and Vodafone (65.5%), but well behind the pace of Smarty (92%), Voxi (almost 90%) and Lebara (95%).
For a while, one of Three’s big selling points was that the company offered the latest phones at cheaper prices than the other major networks. It was also one of the best networks for unlimited data plans, allowing you to use your data allowance abroad at no extra cost.
The first two points still apply to some extent today. Buy an iPhone 14 from Three and you could have it for £49/month over 24 months plus £30 upfront, albeit with a ridiculous 1GB of data. Increase the data allowance to a more realistic 100GB and the price rises to £61/month plus £30 upfront. At this point you might go the extra mile and pay £63 a month for unlimited data. That’s not a bad price, especially when £63 on EE only gets you 125GB, but on iD Mobile you could have the same phone plus unlimited data for £42/month – although you’ll have to pay Pay £99 in advance for to .

Things are a little different with the Samsung Galaxy S22, which costs £47/month plus £30 for 100GB, but with 125GB on EE it would cost £59/month. However, iD Mobile is even cheaper with a 100GB data contract for £33/month and an upfront payment of £29.
What about SIM only contracts? These start at £8/month for a rather paltry 24 month 1GB contract, although there is a 50% discount for the first six months. There is no discount on a 12 month contract and the price increases by £1. You’ll get better deals on 12GB or 30GB, at £12/month and £14/month with the same terms, except there’s a £2 price increase each if you sign up for one year.
There was a time when Three’s Advanced Unlimited plan was arguably the best SIM-only deal around, and at £24/month over 24 months, with the first six months available at half price, it’s by far always cheaper than the corresponding packages from EE, O2, Giffgaff or Vodafone. However, iD Mobile and Smarty have unlimited offers that are even cheaper, so Three no longer has this niche to itself.
Looking at our survey data, Three does not stand out when it comes to value for money. While over a third of customers say they are very satisfied with the network’s value for money, while almost half say they are quite satisfied, that’s just 84% overall, while providers did similarly with iD Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Smarty, Voxi and Lebara survey i. the nineties.

RootMetrics’ latest performance study brings great news for Three: the company has overtaken Vodafone in the UK speed charts, taking second place behind EE. Three now has an average download speed of 29.9Mbps in the UK, behind EE on 66.2Mbps but ahead of Vodafone on 23.8Mbps. The greatest improvements have taken place in British cities. Of the 16 areas tested by RootMetrics, Three averaged download speeds above 20 Mbps overall and above 40 Mbps in eight.
Although RootMetrics no longer provides coverage maps, Three says 4G coverage reaches around 99.8% of the UK population, while 5G services are available to around 56%, and plans to roll them out further and faster over the coming years. In addition, Three is starting to overtake EE in average 5G download speeds, reaching almost 200 Mbps. Interestingly, the potential merger between Three and Vodafone appears to be driven primarily by a desire to accelerate the rollout of 5G on both networks.

For the first time this year, our awards survey asked readers about their 5G experience and Three came third best behind EE and Sky Mobile. Just over half of Three’s 5G customers (51.5%) were satisfied with their 5G connection. Like most other major networks, Three charges £2 a day for EU roaming on all contracts made after October last year. In both cases, a permitted data usage limit of 12 GB applies. These prices aren’t as ambitious as some networks, but it’s now much harder to recommend Three as a good choice for affordable roaming.
