This week, Google defended the change, saying that its research studies showed that the new web panel that opens is “more intuitive and simple” once you get used to it.

On Monday, we shared our in-depth thoughts on the Pixel 6 Pro, easily Google’s best phone to date that truly deserves the “flagship” title. After years of shying away from the brand and charging a bit too much, Google has hit the sweet spot for Android enthusiasts with the Pixel 6 Pro.

For those who pre-ordered the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, shipments arrived this week. Upon arrival, buyers will discover (or have already discovered) that their phone has a Day 1 update available out of the box, bringing devices to the November 2021 security patch.
In a brief forum post this afternoon, Google confirms that a Day One update will be available for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones out of the box. These updates ensure that all advertised Pixel features, such as Magic Eraser and others, work properly.

In the usual pattern of Google’s developed features, the Pixel’s “Call Screen” feature, which lets Google Assistant answer potentially unwanted phone calls, was first rolled out in a small group of countries, the US, Canada and Japan. This week, Call Screen began rolling out to the UK, some EU nations and Australia.
It’s worth noting that the feature is limited in these additional countries compared to how it works in the US, Canada, and Japan. Call Screen on Pixel phones in these countries will be limited to its manual form instead of supporting the automatic screening feature that allows the phone to detect spam calls on its own and screen them for you. This option was first rolled out to Pixel owners in the US in late 2019.
Elsewhere this week, we were able to show off the Google Camera app’s built-in color temperature slider on the Pixel 6. In the same way that the brightness slider lets you adjust the HDR look of a photo before it’s taken, the color temperature adjustment is a simple slider that works just fine in the viewfinder.
The effect can be quite dramatic at the highest levels, but it can help adjust the temperature in scenes that need it. As mentioned in our review, this is a feature I haven’t found necessary in my time with the phone so far, but I could imagine it could be useful in harshly lit scenes like parties where special colored lighting is involved. is used. While they ultimately turned out to be great smartphones, they were flawed. Samsung’s pricing was out of control and the value for its devices just wasn’t there. Now, Samsung is getting a lot right with the Galaxy S21 series by making cuts to lower the price by $200. Samsung admits its mistake, and that’s for the best.

When you think of new flagship smartphones from Samsung or otherwise, you probably think of nothing but updates. Perhaps a little unfortunately, the Galaxy S21 makes a few letdowns compared to the Galaxy S20.

For the base Galaxy S21, these cuts include removing the microSD card slot, lowering the maximum screen resolution to just 1080p, dropping the RAM to 8GB, and replacing the glass with plastic instead. Many see these as bad things, but personally I think Samsung made the right cuts here to bring the price of this device down by $200.
Since we’re currently on hardware, let’s talk about the plastic back. Like last year’s Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 FE, the Galaxy S21 has a “glass” back. While you can definitely tell it’s plastic, it still feels pretty nice to me. The build is solid and sturdy, and the matte texture does a good job of hiding fingerprints. In addition, plastic has additional advantages. It doesn’t break, despite the fact that it is probably easier to scratch. It’s also lighter, leaving the Galaxy S21 a little more comfortable in the hand and forgettable in the pocket.
The buttons along the right side are tactile and clickable, while also being easy to press, plus they’re well placed. The metal frame is shiny, which looks nice, and surprisingly, it doesn’t pick up too many fingerprints. One quirk I noticed with the bezel was the sheer number of antenna lines, six across all four sides of the phone. That’s one more than any of Samsung’s 2020 flagships, and given the spacing and color, they’re quite noticeable. However, this is definitely 5G related and I would definitely take this with a random window cut into the side of the frame.
As ports go, this is pretty standard stuff. There’s a USB-C port for charging, a speaker grill along the bottom supported by the ultra-thin earpiece, and a SIM card slot. However, that slot does not also provide space for a microSD card as mentioned. You’ll also find two microphones on the top of the S21 and one on the bottom, just on the other side of the SIM slot.

One of my biggest complaints about the Galaxy S20 series was the design. The colors were pretty bland and Samsung didn’t do anything special. Fortunately, however, the Galaxy S21 kicks it up a notch. In the color department, the series of colors “Phantom” is a little more attention, especially in “Phantom Purple”, which has two colors, one for the body and another for the camera module and the frame.
The camera module is perhaps one of the most unique design elements of the Galaxy S21. Instead of just being a prominent piece of glass and/or metal coming out of the back, it almost seamlessly becomes part of the frame. It may look like a durability issue, but in person you can see the bit of separation that protects the camera hardware in the event of a drop. It’s a really nice look that I really appreciated, especially when it has this two-tone color. I wish Samsung would go all in on the two colors for all variants as it makes the phone’s grey, silver and even pink models less interesting.
Looking at the bigger picture, this isn’t a revelation for smartphone design, but it’s a nice tweak that shows there are still some ideas that haven’t been fully explored yet. It’s also a look I hope to see on more Samsung devices in 2021.
Last year I called the display on the Galaxy S20 and S20+ “perfect”, and for the Galaxy S21 it’s pretty much the same story. Although the panel itself is now only 1080p, down from 1440p, it’s still quite sharp and offers excellent contrast and colour. Brightness is also great, and the 120Hz refresh rate is now adaptive instead of static. This means the S21 can save some battery and simply increase the refresh rate when you’re scrolling or playing games, and as with Samsung’s 2020 devices, that refresh rate is truly amazing. The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is one you’ll notice right away if this is your first device with the feature. Plus, Samsung left it as default this year!
