Update Personal Game Console Review – When Nintendo announced the Nintendo Switch OLED earlier this year, most were confused by the lack of performance improvements. I was still very optimistic. Because I know gaming on an OLED screen is second to none, and I’m someone who uses the Switch in handheld mode most of the time.
When you pick up the console for the first time, everything looks familiar. When held in hand, the OLED switches feel almost identical, except for the fact that the back feels much more matte and offers a decent grip. Size-wise, the Switch is still pretty much the same, despite having a much larger screen. I appreciate it very much because if it were bigger it would have been a much harder sell in terms of portability.

This is the real turning point. At first glance, or just looking at images of the console, it’s hard to understand how much smaller bezels and a larger screen would make the OLED Switch in portable mode a much better option than before. Not only is the screen larger without increasing the physical size of the Switch, but the OLED screen is also truly beautiful.

The PlayStation VITA is probably my favorite portable console, thanks to its beautiful OLED. Now the OLED Nintendo Switch has taken its place. Removing the OLED screen is quite easy since it hasn’t been improved much. However, when combined with a larger screen size, it can make a huge difference. Blacks are now as deep as the eye can see, and this was perfectly demonstrated while playing Metroid Dread, a game that makes heavy use of black space throughout its level design (read more in our Metroid Dread review here).
But what’s even more impressive is the screen’s vividness, which is largely due to the new OLED-specific “Console Screen Strength” setting that can be toggled on or off. This is very useful for Nintendo games that rely on vibrant colors and simpler, less realistic graphics. Everything stands out better and going back to games like Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild feels new again (check out the comparison shots here).
There were many concerns about the OLED switch losing more pixel density as the screen got larger, but somehow everything looks sharper. I think Nintendo has increased the sharpness and contrast to make everything look better. The best part about all of this is that there are no TV settings to mess with. What you get is the best possible version of this Switch game.
It’s worth mentioning that the screen is now fully bright (this is normal for OLED displays). That said, the screen may be brighter than the previous Switch, but I found the higher brightness more than made up for it.

Another major improvement is the kickstand. I think this improvement will encourage more people to actively remove their Joy-Cons and leave their Switches on the table. Instead of the small kickstand that the previous Switch had, the new kickstand runs the entire length of the switch and appears to be made of a much more durable material.
As for the new Nintendo Switch dock, there aren’t many changes here. It includes an Ethernet port, which can be useful for speeding up downloads or ensuring the most stable connection while playing Super Smash Bros, but we don’t expect any changes to the way it outputs to your TV. In fact, you can use this dock with the original Switch or use the existing dock with the Switch OLED.
The Switch OLED has doubled its internal storage to 64GB, which is actually very welcome. Nintendo says the Switch OLED has better acoustics so it sounds better, but to be honest I never had any issues with the original sound and I don’t notice much of an improvement here either.
All of this may not be a must-have for those who already own a Switch (especially the newer models with larger batteries), but once you see the OLED Switch in person or hold it in your hand, you’ll never want to go back. You might be wondering what you’ve been up to with your original Switch over the past four years.

The OLED model of the Nintendo Switch helps solidify the Switch as one of the best portable consoles of all time. The larger OLED screen is truly beautiful, and small improvements like the new stand and Ethernet port are also appreciated. It’s not the update many people were hoping for, but it’s still a really good update. In January 2022, I purchased a retro portable console that I thought would entertain me for a while. As the weeks go by, you end up with a pile of nearly identical devices that have grown over the years. These cool spiritual successors to the Gameboy form factor have greatly improved the overall experience over the years, but they all eventually get mixed up once you start owning several. I’m very happy to report that Miyoo Mini exceeded all my expectations, and half a year later it’s still my choice for emulation consoles.
So what exactly makes the Miyu Mini so cool in my eyes? It’s literally what I see with my eyes. I like the screen of the 1st generation Miyu Mini. I say 1st generation because there was a recent update with a laminated screen called Miyoo Mini V2. There aren’t many more differences in the newer model, but I’m very happy with the console, which has a 2.8-inch IPS screen. It has a resolution of 640x480p, but unlike many other retro consoles that use a wide aspect ratio like the Powkiddy RGB10S, Miyoo has introduced a square screen with almost no bezels. To be honest, it’s a really attractive handheld that’s completely accentuated by the screen. Add in how bright and compact the pixels are due to the square aspect ratio, and this viewing experience lands near the top of our list of retro portable devices below Analog Pocket. It could have been better displayed when the screen was black, but the library of games we played here allowed us to better understand what was on the screen. Unlike newer Resident Evil titles, 32-bit games like Resident Evil 3 allow for lighter or slightly washed-out darker tones. It’s so pixelated anyway that the aesthetic color accuracy in one viewing range is so small that it makes little difference to the gaming experience. . It’s not like playing on a 50-inch 4K TV where you can see tons of detail. I bought mine for $70 and will probably buy any portable device I own for about $150 or more just for the viewing experience. The screen is very good in my opinion.
I’m also a fan of the form factor for the most part. Because if Nintendo continues this type of product, this is basically what the Nintendo Gameboy Classic will look like. The Mini has a compact shape that fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. This is a very easy device that can fit into almost any size pocket, and on any given day, wherever your pocket is on your body. Although the case is made of plastic, the Mini is solidly put together, giving it a mix of premium feel and user comfort. There is no creaking or cracking when held.
This original Miyoo Mini has a removable 1900mAh lithium battery that supports charging via USB-C slot. While the battery adds slightly more weight to the Miyoo Mini, the ridges on the compartment that holds the battery provide a firmer grip, giving your hand a lifted feel. I found the compactness to have its downsides, as I couldn’t get into a comfortable grip position without feeling fatigued. I like how compact the device is, but a little more separation between the D-pad and the X, Y, A, and B buttons would have allowed for a more comfortable layout for my thumbs. I found my right thumb starting to strain during gameplay due to lack of room to rest. The same goes for my index finger, which naturally wanted to be positioned behind the console of the shoulder-mounted trigger bank. The R1, R2 and L1, L2 triggers are too shallow for input and oddly sized to be pressed with your index finger spread apart. Fortunately, many older retro systems do not use shoulder triggers for control.
