Update Pens Stationery Review – At the pen show, it’s always five o’clock somewhere! Always. Especially on the Hinze pencil chart. I’ve been sitting on this review for a few months, waiting for readers to be able to see and pick up a Hinze pen for themselves before showing off the pen. You’ll have that chance next week at the 2022 Washington, DC Pen Show, as the Hinze team will be present with a full line of pen tables.

While I have developed my interest in fountain pens and focused on my own collection, one goal is to reduce the percentage of “stock” or “standard” pens I own in order to support independent and small makers. . I’ve known Jim Hinze and Francisco Lopez through the show circuit for years, but have never owned one of their pens. At this year’s Baltimore show, the pen in this picture caught my eye, and since there was only one pen in this special collection left in Atlanta, I went ahead and took it home.

This material comes in many different colors and patterns and is easy to spoil!
This particular pen is a classic Hinze style and uses a minimal shape designed to show off the base material. In this case, the abandoned Starry Night used to be called “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.” While I love the pen itself, let me discuss it again – the rubber steals the show. It’s a combination of purple, orange, blue and gray, giving the hat a hint of teal and cream. While there are many manufacturers out there that release colored acrylic pencils, this one uses grays, greens, and creams along with purples and oranges to provide unique colors that I’ve never seen before. I hope these blanks come back at some point because I love the pen in this material.
This side cap is probably my favorite feature of the pen. I love combinations of pale greens, creams, pinks, oranges – too many to name and I seem to find them every day. Sometimes I find myself lost in my thoughts looking at this pen.
The pen is shaped like a flat cylinder, with a long end and a slight notch. It is not sent by design. If I had to pick one thing I like about this pen, it’s that it has a longer lead and I feel very comfortable writing for long periods of time. As a lightweight cartridge-acrylic brush pen, a long balance barrel is probably necessary to create a good balance, and I like to compare it to the “Classic” or “Classic Flash” designed by Canelle Pen Company.

In the end I had a dark blue chest – I think this color makes the part better than the original red.
One of the trademarks of Hinze Pens is the multicolored nano. Unlike conventional anodizing, these nibs go through a different process and are coated on a ceramic plate, making them more durable than conventional anodizing. Here, I’ve chosen a dark blue that feels like a solid and gray blue drawing with this particular pencil. (Violet or magenta are other options.)
Note that I have modified this thread so there is a small gap in the coating, Matt Chen is .5mm. Generally, if you scratch the coating or sheet, there is a risk of it peeling off the surface and peeling off. So far, I’ve never seen one with a Hinze nib, and I understand that because of the process used, the risk of that happening is lower. Care instructions are included with each pen, including “safe” ink instructions and cleaning practices.

The engraving incorporated into Hinze’s cap is subtle and pleasing, giving the pen a quality, finished look.
There are many custom and “small batch” pencil makers out there. It’s easy to get lost, and if you’re new to the world of fountain pens (especially fountain pens), you don’t know where to start. Hinze pens can be a great starting point for new custom fountain pens, or a new destination for experienced users who enjoy using unique materials in their pens. The price point is very reasonable, with most pens priced between $200-$250.

Review: Mark’s Days Ballpoint Pen
All of this work has led to their latest release, the original Plus, a vacuum filling system that uses a piston filling system. This is my favorite Nahvalur pen.
The first released Original Plus models were blatant imitations of the originals, but I got my hands on two of the latest models, Matria White and Lovina Black, for testing.
Right out of the box, the Original Plus impressed. I chose the Matria White pattern for inking, and with a fine steel nib, I stuck the right part into the ink bottle and filled the vacuum filler. On the first install, the tank reached about 50%. I wanted more, so I pushed the ink back into the bottle and put in a double pump, which gave me the expected 75% refill. If I was completely efficient, I’m sure I could get close to the 1.5mm ink capacity in the tank.
At the time of writing, the tank feels very balanced and comfortable. It checks in at 27 grams due to the added internal mechanism (for example the Lamy Safari weighs 15 grams), but it doesn’t feel heavy. The barrel is cylindrical and the grip section tapes slightly to a ridge on the lower rim. The Original Plus doesn’t break new ground, but is built for full-time typing. He succeeded.

What impressed me the most was the performance of Nahvalur’s fine steel in this pen. I had the same idea in my original review and was not happy with it. The Nahvalur’s hub ends are too wide and uncomfortable for me on this line, but the linkage seems to be an improvement on the smaller hubs used on the original Plus. My line is gorgeous, and meets my expectations for a subtle mask.
Nib is my original main suspension. Build quality is there, but I don’t enjoy using it. The Original Plus changes this for the better, and adds a hybrid space-filling system. The best part? Price. At $55, the original Plus is worth it for such a fun experience.
Only 500 of each Matria White and Lovina Black were made, and they’re starting to sell out at various retailers. Original Color Original Plus Plus Fountain Pen is also available. A good choice regardless of your experience level.
Nahvalur became the brand to watch as they expanded their offering of fountain pens, nibs and inks. The next thing I’m looking at is adding a special touch to their line. One can only hope!
