OpenRGB is a free graphics software program that theoretically allows you to control RGB lighting on motherboards, graphics cards and other devices from Linux and Windows operating systems. Using it to control the many RGB lights it supports on Linux requires compiling the Linux kernel separately.

Even if you do this, the pitch and the right opportunity won’t work. It also has the option of allowing you to control RGB lights from a simple and easy graphical interface.

The Linux kernel has good support for common LED lights found on keyboards and laptops (WLAN lighting, etc.), and Linux users can control them by sending messages to /sys/. RGB lights are difficult to work with because they require sending specific messages to specific controllers via SMBus or USB interfaces. This is where OpenRGB comes in. It can, in theory, talk to RGB controllers and make them work using a nice graphical interface. You may find that it is useless software that cannot control practically anything. You can also be happy and get RGB control from a nice and simple GUI.
OpenRGB can, in theory, talk to RGB controllers via the SMBus (i2c) interface or USB. You don’t need to bother with OpenRGB on Linux because it’s a complete and utter waste of time. If you’re a wizard who knows how to apply a patch to the kernel source tree and compile you can try, but don’t expect to be able to control the RGB lighting or anything even if you’ve wasted a lot. Do this and follow the instructions carefully.
The only board we could find working with OpenRGB was the Gigabyte X370 Gaming 5. It required patching the kernel and booting with boot.
Device file for USB devices and try to get OpenRGB working if you have one of the motherboards, graphics cards, keyboards or other hardware listed below. Don’t be surprised if you waste hours without providing useful information that developers can use to improve OpenRGB.

Warning: The OpenRGB website has a big warning section where they state how MSI Mystic Lite motherboards and Gigabyte Aorus Z390 motherboards hide the default SMBus device pages in OpenRGB. While this isn’t a problem with any hardware that now officially supports OpenRGB, there is one concern to be aware of: sending instructions directly to the SMBus controller chips carries some risks.
This is probably what you get when you try to use OpenRGB for the first time. This is true even if you have one of the supported devices (OpenRGB.patch) not building a compatible kernel with the OpenRGB kernel patch.

The OpenRGB project seems very Windows-centric. Just because a device is listed as “supported” doesn’t mean it’s actually supported on GNU/Linux systems. You may find that it doesn’t find any RGB controllers even though there are many that are supposed to be supported and you patch your kernel and follow the instructions. However, it is likely to work. Your mileage on this will certainly vary.

AppImage is available on the OpenRGB release page. You can get it, but you can also get the source. You have to try to get the udev rules file and kernel patch to work anyway, and if you get AppImage you won’t get it. You can get the USB udev rules with wget if you do the AppImage route.

WhirlwindFX attempts to convert the signal to RGB software. The platform makes it easy to integrate RGB lighting into devices regardless of their manufacturer, and the company regularly adds support for new hardware and releases new software integrations that can fully customize in-game events to respond. Users can also submit their own lighting effects and everything is managed by the central Signal RGB app.
We spent a few weeks experimenting with the Signal RGB Pro because its promise of keeping every aspect of your lighting setup in sync didn’t come true. We share our findings below.
