Update Oldboy 4k Steelbook Review
First up, our friends at Arrow Video have announced their January 2021 list of home video titles, and it’s pretty good. It starts with the UK-only Blu-ray releases of Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [Rec] and Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy. Oldboy will also be released in 4K Ultra HD (UK only), but note that 4K discs are not region-locked.

Next, Arrow will release Park Chan-wook’s JSA: Joint Security Area and Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales on Blu-ray Disc in the UK, US and Canada.
Finally, those of you who missed out on Arrow’s recent (and fast-selling) Gamera box set (reviewed here on The Bits) will be pleased to know that his films are being re-released on Blu-ray (again in the UK, USA and Canada) in a wider version configuration. Three SKUs will be available: Gamera: The Heisei Era (3 films plus a documentary and the Gamera the Brave film as a bonus) as both a wide release box set and as a Steelbook, and Gamera: The Showa Era (8 films) as a wide release box set. Obviously, you don’t get all the swag that comes with their original big box, but at least it gives you more access to HD movies. [Read here…]

Mill Creek Entertainment also announced their January 2021 slate today, which will include Ultraman Taro Steelbook (BD – 1/12), Ultraman Taro: The Complete Series (BD – 1/12), Accepted (BD – 1). /19), Your Highness: Ungraded (BD – 1/19), and The Freshman, Crossroads, Like Father Like Son, and Blind Fury (BDs in Retro-VHS packaging – all 1/12).
Zavvi’s Video Rewind Podcast: Episode 1
Meanwhile, our friend Bob Furmanek of the 3-D Film Archive has launched a new Kickstarter to fund the restoration of Abbott and Costello’s first color film, Jack and the Beanstalk (1952), in anticipation of its 70th anniversary. The restoration will be done from archival 35mm SuperCinecolor positive print elements, as the original camera negative no longer survives. If successful, there will be a deluxe region-free Blu-ray release of this film from ClassicFlix in July 2021. Click here for all the details and to pledge your support.
In other news, there are new rumors that Apple is considering buying the streaming rights to the new James Bond film No Time to Die (2020), should MGM decide to skip the long-delayed release of the movie. The idea is that the movie will be available exclusively on Apple TV+ for some time. We know that Apple is considering buying the rights at the beginning of 2020
MGM film catalog, but the pandemic has thrown everyone into chaos. You can read the Bond rumor report on Apple Insider today. It will be interesting to see if the nuclear industry trades (and if there really is anything to it).
And finally today, don’t forget that the long-awaited Borat sequel, also known as Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, is now available for free streaming on Amazon Prime. I don’t know about you, but those of us here at The Bits can now have a good laugh.
