We thought it would make sense to review the GTX 1060 6GB, as we’ve done with Radeon before, so we’ll see how this old game stacks up against current-gen games.
We’ve tested the GTX 1060 several times over the years, so we assume you all know what’s up with this GeForce model. We skip over the specifications or report on the history of the product. Looking at a kind of “make do” situation… is this a good potential purchase in 2021 while you wait for the current GPU to be released from the ridiculous margins on MSRP?
To answer the question, as with the Radeon RX 580, this is not a head-to-head comparison, we are simply asking how the GTX 1060 6GB handles new or popular games at low performance. , medium and high quality settings.
We tested 17 games at 1080p and 1440p with these three quality settings. The test bench was equipped with a fresh Ryzen 9 5950X with 32 GB of DDR4-3200 CL14 memory, so the results will be completely GPU limited. Let’s get into it…

Let’s start by looking at the performance of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. This AMD-sponsored title tends to perform better with Radeon GPUs, although the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB still performs very well and can provide a decent experience in medium quality settings at 1080p with an average of 59 fps.
If that’s not enough, the lowest preset allows for 70 fps, which is no slower than the 75 fps the RX 580 produces.
For 1440p games, you’ll probably need to choose the lowest quality preset, and even then you won’t be able to enjoy the 60fps experience. That said, I think the performance is pretty good considering the age of this GPU.
Older GPUs are still very usable for most esports games, including competitive games like Rainbow Six Siege. Although the GTX 1060 is slower than the RX 580 here, you can still enjoy high refresh rates at the preset 1080p quality.

Even at 1440p, you’ll still see over 60fps, and with lower quality presets you can get over 100fps. For these games, a used GTX 1060 offers great value.
Biomutant is a new game that is visually stunning even with lower quality settings. The performance of the GTX 1060 6GB was excellent, matching or even surpassing the RX 580. Even with the quality presets, you can get 60fps at 1080p, with medium and low-quality presets, you can go beyond that.
At 1440p, you can still get an experience like 60fps using the quality preset, so this is a great result compared to how the game looks.
Outriders is another new game we decided to test. The GTX 1060 is again very close to the RX 580. At medium quality settings, the game looks great and runs just over 60fps at 1080p, or over 40fps at 1440p.

The game runs smooth even on low quality presets and still looks amazingly good. Overall, playing Outriders on the GTX 1060 6GB was an enjoyable experience.
Moving on to Horizon Zero Dawn, we see very similar performance between the GTX 1060 and RX 580. This means that the 1060 was able to deliver excellent playback performance at 1080p in the second highest quality factory setting, called Preferred Quality.
But this is another game that looks good even composed a bit, and I found that the visuals were still excellent with the environment of the ‘original’ quality. This allows 71 fps at 1080p and 49 fps at 1440p.
The GTX 1060 isn’t as good as the RX 580 in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, though it’s comparable to the medium quality preset. The 1060 drops a bit when using low and lower settings, but we still averaged 75 fps at 1080p low and 88 fps at low, so overall a good experience.

Doom Eternal is an exceptionally well-optimized game, and as a result, these old mainstream GPUs run well. The GTX 1060 is slower overall than the RX 580, but still manages over 100fps at 1080p using Nightmare settings.
Then at 1440p it averages 88fps on the low preset and 77fps on high, but it could not use the nightmare settings without changing the texture quality due to the more limited VRAM 6GB buffer.
RX 580 and GTX 1060 have comparable performance in Death Stranding. The 1060 was a bit slower in some cases, but overall performance was excellent.
We’re talking well over 60fps at 1080p using the default quality setting, which is considered a quality setting. Even at 1440p, performance was impressive and certainly very playable at the default quality setting.

The results of Dirt 5 are strange and quite unexpected. As an AMD-sponsored title, you’d expect the RX 580 to run with it, but the opposite is true here. The GTX 1060 was faster in all conditions, and sometimes much faster than seen in the ultra low and low 1080p preset tests.
This makes Dirt 5 an excellent title for the GTX 1060. With the medium quality preset, which otherwise looks great, the GTX 1060 6GB spits out an average of 65 fps. Low and ultra low results in 1080p are surprising. I went back and tested both models to verify this data. Some bugs on AMD’s side severely limited the RX 580’s performance under these test conditions, and as a result, the GTX 1060 was up to 42% faster.
The RX 580 and GTX 1060 are a close match here, and their performance was excellent. Using medium settings, which most Fortnite players use for a competitive advantage, the GTX 1060 averaged 158 fps at 1080p and 101 fps at 1440p. Both are very well played and make for an enjoyable gaming experience.
Watch Dogs: Legion is an Nvidia-sponsored title, so you can expect the GTX 1060 to have an advantage. But that was not the case. Older Nvidia GPUs seem to work better for AMD sponsored titles, while AMD GPUs work better for Nvidia sponsored titles, who knew.
A Quantum Leap For Every Gamer: Nvidia Unveils The Geforce Gtx 1060
The GTX 1060 averages 64fps at 1080p using the medium quality preset, so it’s certainly good enough to enjoy the game, and even in the high setting you’ll see an average of 55fps. However, 1440p is a bit of a drag, averaging just 47fps at the lowest quality setting.
Resident Evil Village is another new game release that we tested. This played significantly better with the Radeon GPU, although the GTX 1060 was still able to deliver excellent gaming performance at 1080p at the maximum preset. It was only 15% slower than the RX 580 and 20% slower with the balanced preset.
The only game that the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB will not really enjoy is Cyberpunk 2077. We expect an average of just 46 fps at 1080p at the lowest possible quality setting.
Cyberpunk 2077 is not the most optimized title, so these results are not surprising. The RX 580 also struggled, although it was 20% faster and the difference was very noticeable.
