The first thing to note is that megapixels aren’t everything. Go into Carphone Warehouse and you’ll see the megapixel count listed next to the phone, but that’s not an indicator of whether or not the smartphone’s camera is good. The higher megapixels may seem like a bonus, but they mostly come down to the technology inside.
What to watch out for? Opening. The f/ number listed on the front might seem a little confusing at first, but it says a lot about the camera you’re holding. An f/1.4 aperture is wider than an f/2.0 aperture, for example, which means the camera will let in more light, and therefore can have more detail.
The pixel and sensor size are as important as the f-number. In short, the size of each pixel (measured in um) determines the quality of the image. Unlike aperture, bigger is better when it comes to pixel and sensor size. Got a big camera sensor? More information can be collected, gathering better dynamic range and reducing visual noise, while the larger pixel size allows more light, resulting in low light performance.

The Pixel 7 Pro truly sets a new standard for smartphone photography. Especially considering that it undercuts the cost of other flagship phones in this range.

The regular Pixel 7, meanwhile, offers almost the same camera system as the Pro at a significantly reduced price. For £250 less than its bigger brother, you get an excellent 50MP and 12MP ultrawide camera, but miss out on a 5x telephoto zoom lens.
If you’re not happy with that, then the good news is that everything is the same, with the same level of camera features and shooting modes in a more compact frame.

Price: £1,039 Buy it now at John Lewis Apple iPhone 14 Pro is one of the most expensive phones in the range, but it does a great job of taking reliable photos and sharp, stable 4K video at 60fps.
The 14 Pro has three cameras on the back. The main camera also offers sensor-shift stabilization in the smartphone – to keep the videos as stable as possible – and is now in its second generation, with Apple improving the way it handles low and medium images. The main camera has seen a significant increase in resolution to 48MP and a 65% larger sensor, while the 12MP ultrawide sensor has doubled in size. The 12MP 3x telephoto module is the same as last year.
While the image quality is excellent – and the 14 Pro based on Apple’s best mode – the best thing is the iPhone 14 Pro’s video capabilities. Also, taking pictures in 4K resolution with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps with Dolby Vision support, the video efforts of other smartphones do not come close when it comes to this level of quality. Cinematic mode – which lets you shoot with an automatic depth of field – is bumped up to 4K resolution, and the new Performance Mode applies camera-like sharpness to your video.
It’s an expensive option, no doubt, but it’s a price you pay for great quality video on the go.

Not only does it continue to be one of the few smartphones to support 8K video recording (with stunning results), but the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s zoom capabilities are second to none. Offering a hybrid zoom range of up to 100x, the Galaxy S23 Ultra excels at telescopic photography, and the 200MP main camera is no slouch. In our tests, we found that the Galaxy S23 Ultra was able to capture richly detailed images in well-lit areas, with excellent dynamic range and rich, bold colors that look like they’ll jump off the screen. The phone’s night mode does an exceptional job of brightening up the image without adding distracting visual noise and drowning out street lights.
Useful photography features, such as the ability to take a picture directly at any frame for 8K video recording, are also a big bonus, as is the ability to capture simultaneously in both JPEG and DNG formats in the RAW Expert app from the Galaxy Store. So if you want a flagship smartphone that can do it all in the camera department, and knock it out of the park with telephoto photography, then the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the perfect candidate.

Price: £449 l Buy now at John Lewis Apple may prefer its customers to spend more on the iPhone 13, but the low asking price of the iPhone SE 3 (2022) is worth checking out when it comes to the camera department. Powered by the same top-of-the-line chipset as Apple’s flagship – the A15 Bionic – the iPhone SE may only be equipped with a 12MP rear camera, but the image quality is outstanding for the price.
It also finally gets Apple’s Deep Fusion technology, which improves low-light images, and Smart HDR 4, which allows the camera to detect and adjust the exposure of each face in group photos. The photos we were able to capture with the iPhone SE were pretty good across the board.
Also, Apple’s portrait mode brings out the best 12MP sensor, with clear details and a rich color palette. In low light, in fact, the iPhone SE 3 surprisingly holds its own against the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The A15 Bionic also allows higher exposure levels and you can clearly record 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR 4K video at 60 fps.

In short, it’s a little closer to the iPhone SE 3 at this price. Despite the lack of wide-angle and zoom options, the iPhone SE 3’s camera is surprisingly powerful.
