Update Note 8 Pro Redmi Review – Redmi’s Note series needs no introduction as it has been leading the charts since its inception. The series has single-handedly pushed the brand forward in emerging markets like India, and I still meet people using the Redmi Note 3 or Redmi Note 4.
For Xiaomi, this series is their comfort zone. While Realme has bombed the segment for a while, the Note series has stood strong. Obviously, Xiaomi has consolidated the entry level and mid-segment and not only relies on the Note series, it still plays a crucial role in maintaining its brand image and market presence.

The Note 7 Pro was launched earlier this year, and the highlight was the 48-megapixel camera. The Redmi Note 8 Pro, on the other hand, has a new 64-megapixel camera along with a new processor. If you’re looking for an affordable phone that does everything quickly and doesn’t cost a fortune, could the Redmi Note 8 Pro be for you?

The color we received is officially called Shadow Black and shares DNA with the Mi A3. Both have the same reflective glass and have slightly curved corners. Still, I wish Xiaomi would also include the build quality. The Redmi Note 8 Pro has an excellent design, but at this point it feels normal or mainstream.
In fact, this is how Xiaomi takes advantage of scaling features to keep the price down and be as competitive as possible. The speaker grill, USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack are at the bottom, while the top has the classic IR blaster. The right has the microSD and SIM card slots, while the left has the power button and volume rockers.
On the back, there is a vertical camera array that houses four cameras and a fingerprint scanner. Oddly enough, the fingerprint scanner is actually in the array and sits very close to the lens. I always smudged the lens cover when I tried to hold the scanner. This is a very strange place to place a fingerprint scanner, but on the bright side I got used to it within a few days and it became an undeniable nuisance.
The camera bump is too large and centered, causing the phone to wobble when held on the table. The same bump also helps you easily take your finger to the scanner, so I’m not complaining.

Unlike other offerings, this is the first phone in the range to receive an IP52 rating for water and dust resistance. I haven’t tried dipping in a glass of water, but the degree is certainly appreciated for maximum peace of mind in a humid city like Mumbai.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display, but it’s an LCD. This is a bit of a bummer for many because the slightly more affordable Mi A3 has an AMOLED panel. But don’t judge the phone by its features. The screen is bright enough and can easily be used in direct sunlight. Even the colors are well saturated and never feel washed out, even when I suddenly switch from an AMOLED panel.
So while it’s a corner kick for Xiaomi, the ultimate experience is definitely not hindered. On-screen fingerprint scanner is not supported as it is an LCD panel and a physical scanner has been added on the back. The Mi A3 had a very slow browser and I’m glad a physical browser has been added – it’s a win-win situation for everyone.
The display has a small waterdrop-style notch at the top, and the notch has been made even smaller. In addition, the panel is HDR compatible, so if you watch a lot of movies or series, this phone is for you.

Xiaomi has opted for MediaTek over Qualcomm for this phone and it will initially be powered by the 12nm Helio G90T chipset. The Mediatek G90T is an octa-core chip with two 2.05 GHz Cortex-A76 performance cores and six Cortex A55 efficiency cores running at 2 GHz. The phone is paired with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.
The Helio G90T is aimed at the mid-range, so it goes against the likes of the Snapdragon 730G. It doesn’t have the same horsepower as some other flagship-spec gaming devices, but is still perfectly serviceable.
On the battery side, it gets a 4500mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. However, the larger battery means a heavier phone, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro weighs almost 200 grams. It’s often difficult to hold your weight while just resting because the smooth glass design is not your friend.
The battery was always enough to get me through a full day of heavy use. The fast charger is now included and you do not need to buy one separately.

Gaming has been at the center of every phone released recently, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro is no exception. It actually works much better than I expected. MediaTek’s previous chipsets were not that good, which is precisely why many eyebrows were raised when Xiaomi decided to switch.
I tried several rounds of Call of Duty Mobile and the game started with the default graphics settings set to High. But even maxing them out wasn’t enough to make the phone sweat. The same thing happened in PUBG Mobile. During a classic match, there were almost zero frame drops or random misfires. Even with HDR turned on, the phone kept asking for more work and never seemed to run out of steam.
When MediaTek launched its chipset, it heavily marketed it as a gaming-focused chipset. Still, the phone tends to get quite warm for extended periods of time. It doesn’t overheat, but it definitely makes you nervous for a while. Also, we have the 6GB+128GB volume and it still manages to kick ass. So if you are looking for a gaming phone on a tight budget, this is the phone for you.
Another highlight of the phone is the 64-megapixel camera on the back. Three other modules join the primary sensor: an 8-megapixel wide-angle, 2-megapixel portrait lens and a 2-megapixel macro shooting camera. A similar arrangement is also found in the Realme XT.
Can Redmi Note 8 Be Used In 2022?
This makes up for a great camera experience for the price, but the whole experience feels very deceptive at times. This is because the camera’s user interface has many features but lacks polish. I wouldn’t say the camera is reliable, as the software is often disappointing. Don’t trust this phone if you need to take photos in seconds.
But if you’re looking for serious photography, the Note 8 Pro won’t disappoint. The 64 megapixel sensor takes great photos in daylight and the color reproduction is almost perfect. It can focus quickly and is always accurate when you just point and shoot. Images are sharper than usual when you zoom in, but this is limited to just 64 MP mode.
I’m impressed with the macro mode because it allows you to zoom in and take crystal clear photos with accurate colors and minimal noise, even at night. Just make sure your hands are steady. The wide-angle lens performed exactly as expected.
There are minor issues with high-contrast scenes where the Redmi Note 8 Pro highlights bright areas a bit too much so that details are no longer recognizable. The AI tries to brighten dark areas, which works relatively well, but causes some noise.

With increasing darkness, image quality gradually deteriorates. Even the special night mode just brings noisy mud to the photos and looks pretty similar to a photo without night mode. Selfies exploded thanks to the 20-megapixel front camera.

Running on Android 9 Pie is Xiaomi’s internal skin called MIUI. And it has ads. Actually, they are too many. While it’s debatable whether system apps have OEM-supported ads, they should definitely be moderated. Many times these ads were obscene and should not have gone directly to a phone that could be used by any child or adult.
Bloatware is everywhere, and you basically have to manually remove a long list of apps hidden in folders on your home screen. Spam apps like Likee lack further moderation and brings me back to the same point – Xiaomi needs to be careful what it steps on.

You get the usual Xiaomi services like Mi Credit, Mi Pay, Mi Video, Notes, Music, Mi Store and more right out of the box. The overall experience is much better than my previous tips about the Note 7, but still full of random bugs. MIUI 11 launched alongside the phone, but you’ll have to wait a while to actually get it.
MIUI newbies and long-time users will quickly get used to it.
