We tested these long down jackets for a few days at a time, exposing them to wind and rain during a very cloudy month in the UK. When we test, we look for how warm the jacket is, is it waterproof, does it have a hood, if so, how well does the hood work and does it look good. These are the ones that stand out.

Remember when we said that a quality down jacket doesn’t have to cost a fortune? This oversized puffer fish from River Island is a perfect example. Available in two colors — black and Barbie pink — we’re impressed. It extends to the mid-calf and the collar goes down to the chin to keep your whole body warm.
The puffy pattern looks expensive, while the oversized fit gives a relaxed feel that complements the ease with which the poppers pop on and off. This one has no hood and is designed for protection from the cold rather than the rain, but the price and quality are so good that we like to rely on our umbrella if the weather improves. Plus, it looks great. Win, win, win.
Lululemon’s wunder bubble jacket is pricey at almost £350. But oh, is it worth it? Made from goose down, this down jacket is exceptionally warm and leaves plenty of room to layer underneath on chilly days. It’s waterproof, and when we wore it in the downpour, we noticed water dripping onto the jacket, which wiped off easily without sinking in.

There’s a removable hood, which means you can go for a slightly fancier style if you’re sure it won’t rain, or if the skies open up, just use the poppers to reconnect and protect yourself from the elements.
When it’s open, you’ll feel like you’re wearing an expensive garment, so zip up and/or popper for ultimate warmth, and wear it to a sports game, winter shopping, or to the gym in one of seven colors. You won’t regret it.
If super warm clothes aren’t on your bucket list, but really cheap clothes are, then this jacket from New Look is for you. While it’s not the most stylish offering, it comes in a mid-shin and can be paired with a large popper. There’s also room for a layer underneath, making it a great choice for more transitional weather.
The hood is more decorative than anything else because it is so wide that a little wind can blow it away. That said, when the coat is finished, the quilted design looks luxe and the belt cinches the waist for shape. For under £40, it’s a great addition to your wardrobe.

This khaki style has pocket details on the chest and two large hidden side pockets for carrying sprays or keeping hands warm on colder days. A belt adds edge to the coat, adding shape at the waist in a way that no other style in this edit does. The funnel neck keeps you warm and cool, and the waterproof material protects your body from the rain, but the absence of a hood means that your umbrella will always be with you on rainy days.
If you are tall, it can be difficult to find a blanket that hangs to your calves and keeps you cozy and warm. Although not marketed as such, this maxi jacket from Warehouse may be the answer to those questions.
It’s not as sleek and bulky as some others, but we found it to be very warm, waterproof, and has a nice hood, all great ticks. However, the zips are a bit flimsy and can stick – but if you’re struggling, poppers are a great option and zip up to the chin for ultimate warmth.

There is absolutely no reason for down jackets to be gender specific, as many of them are available in black and there is a style for everyone. Such is the case with Arket’s oversized down jacket, available in black or green.
We tried black and 100% recycled down, and the feathers really did the trick, keeping us cozy as bugs. There’s no hood, and it doesn’t fall to near the knee like others, but it does have a funnel neck that ties into a collar.
It looks good and wraps you comfortably, just what you want in a down coat. No matter who you are, you won’t regret adding this environmentally conscious option to your cart.
The & Other Stories brand rarely disappoints, and this oversized jacket is no exception. Similar to Arket’s offering (£229, Arket.com), it’s made from recycled materials and uses recycled down and feathers to keep you warm. You can choose this knee-length coat in black or light pink, and it will hold its shape well whether it’s packed or open.

This one doesn’t have a hood, but has a zipper hidden by a popper and an interesting puffy pattern. It’s quite thick, but most will keep you warm in this cold weather, and we love how comfortable it feels when we try it on.
There’s a reason Barbour is a well-known brand, so it’s no surprise that its long-sleeved softshell jackets are getting such a makeover. This one does have a hood to keep out the elements, but it doesn’t fall like a calf, so it’s great for walking.
If you love Barbour’s classic quilted pattern, you won’t be disappointed, as this button down coat features it, along with four side pockets to hold your belongings and keep your hands warm. We wore our coat for country walks and thought it was the perfect outerwear for light outdoor activities – not too thick but still warm.
The best jacket for price, quality and style is the River Island Black Quilted Oversized Down Jacket, but if you have a little extra cash, we couldn’t recommend the Lululemon wunder Down Long Jacket more highly. If style is your top priority, try Khloe Kardashian’s Good American Longline Belted Down Jacket.
