Until then, we were in no rush to move him from bed to bed. He is a great sleeper – we certainly didn’t want to risk that! He was also a real fixer and we would often find him up at the other end of the board, or lying on the side instead of the top. We thought that if he fell asleep, he would spend the middle of the night sleeping… and we would spend the middle of the night helping him out of bed.

The Grow Company kindly gave us a grow bed set to review – and although we had some early teething problems, it was great.
We already had Gro company products. Their black out blinds were great to hang over the windows when we were away and the gro clock was great to keep my older two in bed in the morning. And of course, they revolutionized baby bedding with their multi-award winning grow bag, with sleeping bags now the norm for babies. I know they are a brand I can trust.
A grow bed is like a large sleeping bag, it accommodates your child in their bed and prevents them from falling when they go to their first proper bed. They come in many styles, some gender neutral and others particularly gender specific. We chose the racing lead style, as it went well with the existing color scheme in the toddler’s bedroom.
The bed consists of a fitted sheet, an embroidered pillowcase, and a duvet cover with zippers. You can buy extra sheets. You’ll need to buy your own pillow and duvet to fit inside – go ahead and make your own, though these are more expensive. Luckily, we inherited an underarm quilt ad pillow and it fit well.

There is a choice of two sizes of the Gro To Bed Bedin. A bunk bed, which fits up to 70x140cm and costs £39.99, and a regular single bed, which fits up to 90x190cm and costs £44.99. Our crib is right at the top end of the scale and it fits well.
When I first saw the pictures, I had visions of my little one curled up in a bag, trapped and overheated. So I was happy to see that the zippers are only a small part of the neck that has a loose bottom.
I’ll be honest and say it took a while to get the idea of a new bed for a toddler. In fact, he hated it at first, was reluctant to give up sleeping bags and refused to get into bed. Normal small – resistant to change. We slowly introduced the new bed over a few weeks until he was happy and although we had a rocky start, we are really happy with him.
The first two nights did not go well. He fell out of bed several times. I think it was because he got out of bed.

Naturally, I was a little disappointed to begin with, but as the father from Cardiff told me, imagine how many times he would have come out without a bed. And he has a point! The few times we went in to check on him, he was on the edge of the bed, supported only by the bedclothes. So it definitely does its job and we persevered.
We’ve been using the beds for about four months now, and after the initial teething problems, it’s been great. The little one sleeps through the night, hasn’t rolled for weeks, and is so excited to get into his big boy bed, we don’t even have to ask him.
The downside is the price. At £39.99 / £44.99, it’s a lot more expensive than the usual toddler duvet cover (although at the time of writing this review they’re currently reduced to £34.99 / £39.99 on the site, a further 12% with a discount if you sign up to their email alerts).
But in terms of sleepiness, it’s a good investment, especially if you know it will be used by more than one child.
