Duvets can be difficult to replace, but using one is essential to extending the life of your comforter (or comforter). And changing the cover can easily transform your bedding – a heavier fabric adds warmth to the comforter and a luxury cover instantly elevates its style.

Ashenford Bedframe + Hypnos Mattress Bedset Package (queen)

We spent a total of 96 hours researching duvet covers and tested 16 to find six well-made, comfortable options for different climates and tastes.

Our picks include our favorite linen, durable percale, luxurious percale, trendy prints, smooth satin and warm flannel. They are all Oeko-Tex certified to be free of harmful substances and are all made of cotton or linen.

As part of our research for this 2016 guide, we interviewed Shannon Maher, assistant professor of home product development at the Fashion Institute of Technology and former product designer for The Company Store. She helped us with our test strategy and provided us with useful information about stray fibers and construction. We then reviewed customer reviews at various department stores and home beds.

As a bedding writer at Wirecutter, I’ve written many guides to textiles over the past seven years, including our guides to blankets, flannel sheets, cotton sheets, and apparel. I am a quilter and quilt designer with about 15 years of experience in making, washing and using quilts, cotton fabrics and other bedding.

If you are thinking about covering your down or down alternative, you may be confused by the term “duvet”. Technically, a quilt is a cover that is sewn together, usually comes in a pattern or color and does not require a cover – think bedspread. The blanket is plain, usually white and often filled with down. Put in a duvet cover (which is easy to wash) to keep clean. But “comfort” and “blanket” are often used interchangeably in the United States, according to FIT’s Shannon Maher. No matter what you call your down or alt-down blanket, you need to put it in a duvet cover.

This is the cover we would invest in if children or pets share the bed. It’s made from our favorite percale sheet, and we know the fabric will stand up to years of abuse and frequent washes, possibly surpassing the other cases on this list.

Why it’s good: If you have small children or pets in the house, we recommend the L.L.Bean 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Comfort Cover. This cover is made from the same fabric as our finest percale sheets; it is Oeko-Tex certified and we have tested and recommended it since 2014. We still support this fabric for its quality and construction. We tested two of these cases and the fabric, seams, and buttons survived our shake tests, my dog’s playful chewing and dirty paws, and a lot of abuse from my kid (including spilled chocolate milk). The covers still look good after frequent washing. We doubt some of the more fragile covers we’ve tried would hold up as well.

The percale isn’t as soft as satin (like our Cuddledown pick), and the L.L.Bean cover is thicker and feels fresher than the other percales we recommend here, but we still found it comfortable to sleep under. It barely creased from the dryer (only the Cuddledown and Restoration Hardware percale creased less) and any creases smoothed out easily on the bed.

Cons, but not deal breakers: The connections were the weakest of any we tested—one came off the cover during our shake tests. Although L.L.Bean offers eight colors and two different prints, we wish they were more modern. Still, we tested the sun yellow in 2018 and loved how it brightened up the room, so it’s possible to find a color you like here.

Long-Term Test Notes: L.L.Bean percale remains the most wearable percale I’ve ever tested. I have long tested a set of coordinating sheets since 2017. And after all these years they still feel better, wash better and look better than most other percales. The color is bright, the wrinkling is minimal (which is unusual for percale), and there are no real signs of fabric thinning or edge fraying. They still feel smooth and crispy and are a household favorite.

This cotton percale cover is clean and robust. And it comes in more than a dozen trendy, solid colors that match some of Riley’s other beds if you want to coordinate. It’s lightweight and doesn’t add much bulk to your quilt.

Why it’s great: We recommend three percale duvet covers in this guide, and the Riley Percale Duvet Cover is the most luxurious. Coordinating percale sheets are an upgrade choice in our 2019 cotton sheet guide, and the fabric is thin yet strong, crisp yet soft and light as air. It is also Oeko-Tex certified, like most of our selected products. We tested the Riley duvet cover in the spring of 2022 and it is as flexible as sheets. After washing and a few weeks of sleep testing, this coverage only got better. The wrinkles smooth out over time. And every morning when I make the bed, I notice that this comforter is easier to lift on the sheet than the Brooklinen cover I usually use in the spring. I also tested this quilt on a new quilt I’m testing for our quilt guide, and that quilt shed tons of feathers inside Riley’s quilt (it won’t be a choice). I had no idea it was leaking until I took the cover off to wash it. Riley is woven tightly enough to keep every bit of down from a quilt tucked in.

Riley’s 13 color choices are our favorite modern, solid options. Like most of our other featured products, they have matching sheets in the same fabric. But we love that this coverlet also goes with many of the color options for Riley’s Textured Coverlet, a summer staple pick in our bed blanket guide. This gives you the option of a perfectly matched, perfectly solid color bed for every year (matching fakes are also available).

Flaws, but not deal-breakers: Wrinkles, which is an unfortunate truth of most percale fabrics. During the warmer months of the year, we think it gives a relaxed feel to the bed. But if you prefer a sleeker look, you might like a satin case like the Cuddledown instead.

This soft and comfortable percale cover comes in the prettiest and most interesting prints we’ve seen. It’s one of the cheapest sheets we’ve tried, but it feels like nice hotel beds.

Why it’s good: Brooklinen is one of the few bed brands we’ve tested that offers prints on duvet covers, and they’re the trendiest prints we’ve seen. The Brooklinen Classic duvet cover options change every few months, but there are usually a dozen options that are complicated (no cute animals or fruit here) but still fun. We tested three different Brooklinen prints (plus a solid white cover from our original 2016 testing) and liked them better than the homemade prints offered by L.L.Bean (the only other company on our list that offers duvet cover prints).

The classic duvet cover is made from the same smooth, long percale fabric as Brooklinen’s Classic Sheets – which we recommend in our Summer Sheets Guide and our Printed Sheets Guide – both of which are Oeko-Tex certified. Just like the sheets you find in a nice hotel, the fabric is pleasantly cool and crisp. It’s a perfect mid-weight cover that’s lighter and softer than the durable L.L.Bean 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale (but slightly stiffer than the Riley percale cover).

Flaws, but not deal-breakers: This one looks a little more wrinkled after washing than the L.L.Bean percale, but overall, wrinkles are minimal. Also, the bedspread we tested in 2016 was made from long-staple Egyptian cotton, but now it just says “long-staple cotton” on the Brooklinen page. It’s hard to tell the difference between a new cover and one that’s been washed and used for a few years, so we’ll have to long-term test the new one to see if it holds up as well.

Notes on long-term testing: We long-term tested our original white case from 2016 (it was the original top pick in this guide) and had other staff long-term test newer cases for one to two years. I’m still impressed with the overall construction of the original cover – it’s almost six years old and still looks clean, bright white, with no major signs of wear (there are a few small nicks after all these years). It’s still one of the softest, most comfortable, and strongest comforters I’ve tested, and it’s been on my bed every spring and summer since we first tried it. One of our former employees who long-term tested a printed cover over several years said, “The material still feels really soft and nice on the skin.”
