Update News Phone 2020 Review – With the 8080, Doro hopes to pack its senior-friendly mobile tech into a sleek smartphone body. The phone has a lot of success here, though its price is debatable.

It drives just fine, and the addition of Doro’s signature panic button and supplementary service is a bonus, but the advent of the cheap and pleasant Challenger brand (and the price of previous Doro devices) has pushed the price up to £320 . a bit negative.

Honestly, this phone is worth a look. The interplay between the gold/bronze trim and the white (or black – both look great) body really pops. Doro definitely knows how to make its phones stand out, even if you could argue that the front design is reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy S7.

The power button is on the top right, and the volume rocker is on the left, just above the SIM port. The bottom home button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, and it works well — I don’t recall having any issues logging in with it.

There’s a large bezel with a blinking LED notification light. The phone also comes with a charging stand — useful for the target audience. Instead of leaving your phone somewhere, you can place a designated charging point where it’s upright and more visible.

The panic button is also nicely placed on the back of the phone, just below the camera bump, which itself is quite small.

As the benchmarks show, it’s not a performance phone. But it doesn’t have to be. The main focus is on the support features that come with the phone. These include: simple apps like Set and View that combine multiple apps under one roof with large icons and text for easy access from the home screen; Others set up their phones; remote devices using TeamViewer; and technology that enables clear voice calls, which I couldn’t test because my hearing is still pretty good.

All of these settings worked well, with the panic button responding 100 percent to a three-second hold or three taps within a second. The 3,200mAh battery comfortably lasts a day, and I was able to push it to two, the kind of light use you might expect from your demographic.

While a 16MP snapper sounds good, the Doro doesn’t seem to be thinking beyond megapixel sizes. There are no portrait or wide-angle options, and image quality is useable at best. There are cheaper devices and better cameras on the market.

However, for the target market, it will definitely get the job done. Point-and-shoot, firing the flash when necessary. Simplicity is the goal. The same goes for the 5MP front camera, can’t believe it can do much in low light, but still can’t.

Given the price, you might expect the 8080 to pack more power under the hood. Admittedly, the over-65 market won’t care too much about it, but it does make the £320 price tag look a bit expensive, while other, more affordable devices cost less (though it’s £255 on Amazon).

Finally, if you have an elderly relative who wants to get into smartphones, the 8080 is a great choice. It’s a clear style and performance upgrade over its predecessor, the 8040, with price issues largely offset by its support for family members, emergency capabilities, and attractive but solid design.
