About this Xbox Series S review: I spent eight days with the Microsoft Xbox Series S as my main gaming device. It has been tested on both a 60Hz Ultra HD TV and a 144Hz Full HD monitor. Supports the latest version of the operating system. The build number is 10.0.19041.5084. Android Authority purchased an Xbox Series S console for this review.
The Xbox Series S is a small black and white cuboid measuring 275 x 151 x 65mm. For context, it’s slightly taller than the Xbox One when sitting horizontally, but thinner in everything else. The next-gen console takes up almost no space with a total volume of only ~2.7 liters.
It can be placed upright or laid on its side thanks to the pre-installed feet on both sides. However, it is slightly taller than its predecessor. For this reason, you will need more space in your entertainment center to provide adequate airflow to the top fan. However, its smaller size means you won’t need much space behind it for cables and rear airflow. Due to its minimalist design, it does not appear next to a DVR, Blu-ray player or other console.
The small size is partly due to the omission of the optical drive. However, this means that the Xbox Series S only supports digital games and other media.

Before you get there though, you’ll need to set up your console. The S Series only requires two cables: a power cable and an HDMI cable, both included in the box.
While we’re here, we should check other ports. On the front is a single USB Type-A port. On the back are the previously mentioned power ports and HDMI 2.1 outputs. In addition, you’ll find Gigabit Ethernet, two USB Type-A ports, and a proprietary storage expansion slot. Optical SPDIF audio ports, IR out, and HDMI in are missing – all of which were found on the Xbox One S. On the back of the Series S, there are also tactile markers below the ports. These are great for accessibility as they allow you to find the right ports even if you don’t see them.
You must sign in or register for an Xbox account during the setup phase. As with any modern slot machine, it can be a bit of a pain if you just want to get moving. However, due to the digital nature of the console, you will need an account to actually download games and other media. You can set up your console using the Xbox mobile app. I had some problems with it, but my colleague Oliver, who tested the Series X, had no problems. When it works, it’s a quicker way to get through the setup process.

There are a lot of required updates when the Xbox Series S is first booted up. Even with an average download speed of 750Mbps, it took me about 40 minutes to set up. You need to update your system and controller, and link your accounts. It is quite an intuitive process. Keep your hand the entire way, but be sure to allow some time to set up.
Ps5 Review: An Essential Games Console
The Xbox Series S is quiet under low load, such as watching Netflix or browsing the Xbox Store. When playing a triple-A game like Watch Dogs Legion, the fan spins a bit but is still barely audible. It is worth noting that the fan grill is located directly above the place where dust easily settles. Noise can build up and become a problem over months or years as the fan inevitably collects dust. However, we won’t know for sure until later in the console’s lifecycle.
In conclusion, the Xbox Series S does not look offensive. It’s simple and straightforward, making it a good fit for many gamers’ lounges.
The Xbox One controller has a nice design with an alternating stick configuration and a rumble trigger. Microsoft decided to make a few minor changes to the new Xbox Wireless Controller – the same gamepad that shipped with the Series S and Series X. However, it retained the basic layout and design from the previous generation. There are two sticks, D-pad, ABXY buttons, two triggers, two shoulder buttons and four middle buttons. Below that are a pair of ports: one for accessories and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headsets.
The main changes concern ergonomics. The back panels are now textured for added grip, as are the triggers. The top of the controller where the Xbox button is located is now aligned instead of indented. There is also a new share button in the middle. The D-pad has been rounded and made more clickable and tactile. At the top, the USB-C port replaces the old micro-USB port.
Xbox Wireless Controller (2020) Review
In the hand, the controller feels heavy and easy to hold thanks to the textured back. I have medium sized hands and can easily reach all the buttons. The directional pad is a little loose but clicks well. The ABXY buttons haven’t changed since the last gamepad, and the shoulder buttons and triggers feel solid and satisfying.
Like previous Xbox controllers, this one does not come with a battery. Two AA batteries are included, but then you’ll need to source your own. You can use the controller in wired mode via the USB-C port above on both Xbox Series S and Windows PC. Personally, I don’t like using disposable AA batteries, but Microsoft offers a rechargeable battery (sold separately), so it’s not the end of the world. You can also use AA batteries if you want.
I played a solid 10 hours with the controller and not once did I notice the battery life icon move. Microsoft says the Xbox One controller should last up to 30 hours. I am inclined to believe this based on my personal experience so far. Like the Xbox One controller, first- and third-party batteries are readily available for less than what Microsoft offers. This sweetens the deal when it comes to battery life and charging convenience.
The rumble on both the main landing gear and triggers is strong, if a bit loose like the previous generation. There’s no special touch technology in this controller like the one found in the PlayStation 5’s DualSense gamepad. That said, I was very happy with the Xbox Series S controller for playing whatever games I wanted.

The Xbox Series S is not a performance-oriented console. Instead, Microsoft is looking to strike a balance between next-gen power and value for money. It’s a big step up from the Xbox One and Xbox One S, but it’s nowhere near as powerful as the Xbox One X (GPU-wise, at least) or the Xbox Series X.
The Xbox Series S and Series X processors share the same custom AMD Zen 2 architecture. However, Microsoft has reduced the number of components for the Series S. It has a 3.6GHz octa-core processor, 10GB of GDDR6 RAM, and a GPU with 20 compute units at 1.2565GHz . In comparison, the more powerful X series has a 3.8GHz octa-core processor, 16GB of GDDR6, RAM, and a GPU with 52 compute units at 1.825GHz.
In exchange for this performance drop, you get a smaller and cheaper console. Less energy-intensive components do not require as much cooling capacity, significantly reducing the total space required.
That said, at first I didn’t feel that much of a performance improvement on the Xbox One S at 1080p. Triple-A games often ran below 60fps, while some backwards compatible games remained locked at 30fps. However, others fared better. Some games like Forza Horizon 4 hit 60fps with very few hiccups.
