Apple has released iOS 13.1, which fixes many bugs in the initial iOS 13 and also introduces new features.
IOS 13 is a big update. There are two big changes that will change the way you use your iPhone — dark mode and signing in with Apple — and Apple is giving some long-running apps major updates in Photos and Maps. Other adjustments may take a little longer to take effect.
All in all, it’s a solid effort that should be an even more important update, especially now that Apple is rolling out subsequent point updates to fix some bugs. (Released less than a week after iOS 13’s launch, iOS 13.1 fixes a number of bugs and enables some features not available with the original update.) Here’s a closer look at what you get with iOS 13 and whether or not you should jump in now or wait.
Before we talk about iOS 13 features, let’s make sure you have an iPhone that can run the new software. iOS 13 works on iPhone 6s and later, as well as iPhone SE and iPod touch 7th generation. If you buy one of Apple’s new iPhones – iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max – iOS 13 is already installed, so whether or not you want to update to iOS 13 has been answered for you.

I admit that I am a dark mode skeptic and call this feature for those who value aesthetics highly. But then I learned that dark mode really suits the way I use my iPhone.

These are, of course, built-in iOS 13 apps, and a few third-party options like Twitter have already added their own dark mode features. IOS 13 introduces a new way to sign in to an app or website on your phone that balances convenience and privacy. Sign in with Apple allows you to use your Apple ID to sign in, if you prefer to use a fingerprint reader, verify your sign in with Face ID on newer iPhones or Touch ID. All you enter during sign-up is your name and email address, and you can hide even that last bit of information.

Signing in with Apple allows you to hide your email address using Apple’s email transfer service. In this scenario, Apple creates a unique, random email address and forwards all communications sent by the app or website to your real email address.
This is one of the other features that app makers must support in their existing offerings. Some, including Kayak, Fretella, and Kitchen Stories, supported the feature when iOS 13 launched on September 19, and the new iOS 13 feature makes it easy to sign in to these services. Click Sign in with Apple and a pop-up menu will ask you to confirm with the option to share your email address or have Apple prepare one for you. You can turn on sending email by going to Settings, tapping your name and choosing Passwords & Security, where you manage apps that use your Apple ID.
It’s still early days, but I expect this to be one of the most popular additions to iOS 13 if it’s adopted by many app makers. Who doesn’t want more control over what personal information they share with others?
In previous versions of iOS, I didn’t spend much time in the Photos app because I found the interface a bit cluttered, making it difficult to find the photo I’m looking for. Apple’s previous attempts to make photos more interesting—advanced search tools here, new ways to find old photos there—just didn’t sit well with me. However, the Photos view in iOS 13 is much more welcoming. And all thanks to an added row of options above the redesigned Photos tab.

Apple now gives you the ability to organize your photos by day, month, or year. (There’s also an All Photos view, but I used to find the expanded view of every photo you have on your phone so weird.) Even the views of months and years have their charms. Months of collecting your photos together and into collections of individual events – a set of photos I took of my hometown’s Independence Day parade is in one collection, and a family vacation in Paris is in another.
Years include photos taken at the same time in previous years—a baseball game I attended in Chicago four years ago now highlights the 2015 collection—and clicking on the Years view will scroll through the highlights of photos from that year.. It is a very thoughtful method
