Update New Cellphone 2021 Review

Update New Cellphone 2021 Review – If you know where to look, these days it’s not too hard to find a smartphone under $500 with a decent overall experience. While Samsung’s Galaxy A52 and Google’s Pixel 4a 5G are two phones worth noting, the TCL 20 Pro 5G enters the fray, offering a lightweight glass body, wireless charging, and a number of options the competition doesn’t. offers seem to match this price.

Most people think of flagship devices, but the mid-range segment, especially phones that sell for $500, is where most people should take a closer look. You may not be getting the latest and greatest technology, but these phones represent excellent value for money and the TCL 20 Pro 5G offers just that.

Last year’s TCL 10 Pro wasn’t a huge hit as it was denied the 5G treatment, but this year it’s been rectified by using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G. By now, you’re probably familiar with how this chipset works. It offers a fast enough user experience through the interface, apps load very quickly, and the phone’s 6GB of RAM is enough for easy multitasking. You’ll notice that the app runs out of memory from time to time, but that’s nothing to worry about.

The 750G isn’t specifically designed for gaming, but it can handle it, even in Genshin Impact and Call of Duty Mobile at 30 fps on medium and high settings. This is not suitable for serious players. As games get bigger and bigger, this phone’s 256GB of storage really stands out in this category, offering double the storage of its closest competitors, and that’s not counting the expandable microSD storage you get.

For fun, I installed more than two dozen of my favorite games on the phone and had more than 200 GB of free space.

Unlike other brands, TCL manufactures its own displays. That said, the panel is a perfect fit for this set, leveraging the company’s years of experience developing the world’s most popular TVs. The 6.67-inch FHD+ “waterfall” panel curves around the edges of the phone. While I generally prefer flat displays, the curvature is minimal, creating unnecessary glare and the occasional typo when typing.

TCL has already faced criticism because there are cheaper devices with 90Hz displays, but they all use LCD panels. At 60 GHz, this display is excellent. With TCL’s NXTVISION 2 engine and Pixelworks i6 on board, the display can automatically adjust the on-screen content. It can also convert standard videos to HDR for improved contrast and an overall enhanced viewing experience.

My only gripe is that the display could be a little brighter for better reading in direct sunlight.

One of the standout features of the TCL 20 Pro 5G is its design. I usually look at smartphones under $500. Most devices in this category have solid plastic or glossy plastic frames and back panels that give the impression of metal and glass. Being TCL’s most expensive device, they opted for an aluminum frame around the edges and a double-glazed glass panel on the back. The back has a matte finish that resists fingerprints, with a glossy finish that highlights the TCL logo on the left side and the phone’s four cameras.

As with last year’s 10 Pro, TCL managed to give us a phone without this camera bump. It’s a little weird at this point, to be honest, but it’s nice to have a phone that lays perfectly flat on a desk and doesn’t ring when you tap the display.

The left and right edges are contoured to give the phone a slim profile, but the top and bottom edges of the phone are smooth. You can also stay on the phone if you prefer. However, I don’t recommend it if you want the front and back glass to stay unusable for as long as possible.

Since this is a mid-range device, there’s still a 3.5mm headphone jack and, as mentioned earlier, a microSD card slot. If you want to use your phone as a remote control for your TV, the TCL has a built-in IR blaster, and you get stereo speakers and an on-screen fingerprint sensor. You also get a programmable smart key that can be configured with single, double and long presses. It’s great to have a hardware switch to change settings at night or turn on the LED flash.

Overall, the phone’s fit and finish is much better than what we’ve seen from other $500 devices. Typically, you will have to spend at least $700 to find this device.

The 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 main camera with OIS is the same one we saw last year on the Oneplus 8 and has been used by most of 2019’s flagship devices. It’s not the best sensor you can buy, but it can take great shots, and thanks to OIS, it works great even in low light. TCL still has some work to do to maintain white balance between the main and rear cameras, but the pictures you can take are certainly better than most $500 smartphones.

Surprisingly, the main, ultra-wide and selfie cameras are all capable of recording 4K video. The quality isn’t the best, but being able to record at the same high resolution with all three cameras makes a big difference for those who use their smartphone as their primary video recording device. The only downside is that TCL uses multiple microphones on the phone to record a single mono audio track. I don’t know why this choice was made, but it definitely detracts from the video recording experience.

By default, the 32-megapixel selfie camera uses pixel binning to deliver 8-megapixel images, which are really pretty. For the clearest results, you can turn off Beauty mode and turn on High Pixel mode, which captures selfies at 32MP. A 5-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor should do the trick, but no one will use them often. I wish TCL and other manufacturers who put these sensors on the back of their phones would take the money from these cameras and give us better selfie cameras.

My only complaint is with the phone software. As you’d expect from such a budget device, there are a few third-party apps pre-installed, but that’s not a big deal, as it goes without saying. What I don’t like is that TCL hasn’t changed much in their software in the last two years.

It looks like TCL is using a 2015 phone from the launcher. It runs Android 11 and TCL is very good at providing software updates and security patches to other devices and I hope we get the same here. But the overall user experience of this phone is in dire need of an overhaul, which hopefully will be introduced with the arrival of Android 12.

Finally, let’s talk about battery life and charging. While the 18W wireless charger is nothing fancy, it gets the job done by charging the 4500mAh battery in an hour and a half. What sets this phone apart is that it offers wireless charging, a feature few $500 phones have.

Unfortunately, that good news is marred by the 20 Pro’s mediocre battery life. The numbers for the 4500mAh battery and Snapdragon 750G are disappointing. It will get you through 5-6 hours of full time, but it will last as long as the Pixel 4a 5G, which has a 3885mAh battery.

So, should you buy the TCL 20 Pro? The phone has its flaws, as do most $500 smartphones. The difference is what TCL has given this device. With wireless charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a glass and metal body, and 256GB of storage, you’ll be getting more value for your money than the likes of the Samsung Galaxy A52 and Pixel 4a 5G. Whether the battery and software compromise is worth it is up to you.

The TCL 20 Pro is one of the best mid-range smartphones of 2021, making it a great alternative for anyone who doesn’t want to settle for another mid-range smartphone from Samsung.
