A few months ago, Samsung gave us the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G test device.
The smartphone basically accompanied me in my daily life for several months. In this long-term test, I will make detailed conclusions after a few months of use. First of all: It’s a great smartphone, but it has one major flaw.
Apart from the AKG earbuds, the box also contains a SIM needle, power bank and USB-C charger, and a quick start guide. If you open the box, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G will come straight to you. It is well packed and equipped with a protective film at the factory. It does not include any case or other accessories.

As always, Samsung can’t complain about the design and workmanship. The buttons have a good pressure point, but I personally don’t like the huge camera surface on the back. Here it would be possible to act much more restrained and not be so noticeable. The grip is also very good – at around 186 grams, it is quite secure and comfortable to hold.
With a 6.7-inch display, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G can really score points. It has a resolution of up to 3200 x 1440 pixels (WQHD+) and offers a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. However, the two cannot be combined – either FHD + (2400 x 1080) and 120 Hz, or 60 Hz and the maximum resolution. Combined, the best of both worlds would be incredibly good, but the battery would suffer even more damage than it does now. But more on that later.
The color reproduction of the Samsung display panel convinced me again – rich colors, good contrast thanks to AMOLED and adjustable white balance. I also really liked the inconspicuous notch at the top of the display, like a “camera hole”. The flagship gets my full score for the display, but for that I would have preferred the compromise of 90Hz and WQHD+.
There is also an always-on display on board that discreetly shows the time and information displayed as app icons. Well done, but draws even more battery.

Many Samsung users probably know the word “warm” from their devices. Same problem again here – Oh Samsung! Inside is an Exynos 990 octa-core processor. Together with 8 or 12 gigabytes of RAM (depending on the variant), this makes it quite warm in the hand. So it could be that the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G overheats with a simple restart. Things like updating apps or installing system updates also have a thermal effect.
Otherwise, the 5G processor has great performance in daily life, great multitasking, and high speeds in 5G networks. Our test report on DreI’s 5G network in Linz also included the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, which performed well. Things like a Samsung-provided “maintenance mode” and a full or blank 5G display in the status bar were helpful for testing. With the latter, you always knew immediately whether 5G was active or not — other smartphones, for example, display 5G constantly, though this one currently only uses 4G networks. Such things are measured on other smartphones from competitors.
Storage is available at 128GB or 512GB (depending on the variant), which can be expanded up to 1TB via microSD card. It is really visible.
The biggest criticism is the weak battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G. This is evident in the test reports from colleagues of Profind The Problem, all over the bank. Niels, our editor who tested the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, complained about the same thing about his model. The problem Samsung is having, mainly due to Exynos, has been around for a long time and just can’t handle it. For the test report of the S20 Plus with QualcommProzesor, this point of criticism does not appear.

The smartphone didn’t last a full day, and you can’t count on more than three to four hours of SOT (screen-on-time) – but without 5G and always-on-display. You could probably do better with 120Hz idle and a lower resolution. But this value – we can directly say – does not correspond to flagships at this price.
But there’s hope for those spoiled for outlets: The S20 Plus charges fully in just over an hour. 25W fast charger included.
