This entire outfit was inspired by the beautiful new pattern cover for V1605… But what’s a seamstress to do when the look she wants isn’t released when she needs it? It should be DIY. I was in the middle of pattern testing this tai top and bodysuit and wanted to complete this look for the upcoming Christmas season using the Vogue pattern cover as my inspiration. I love the way the top turned out and you can read all about it here. The skirt was torn for what I wanted to do. I love, love, love the Vogue skirt, but it’s a little too fancy for my current needs, and like I said, it wasn’t there during the sample test. I then wanted a maxi skirt in Simplicity 8743

And boy am I glad I didn’t have enough fabric because I think the skirt weighs 20 pounds. Sometimes things work out the way you want them to and in the end I’m very happy with the end product. And, the best part is that this fabric was only a few dollars! Read on to see my thoughts and a little cheat time I did when I created this DIY Pleated Skirt with Simplicity 8743!

Fabric: I picked up this beautiful idea at a thrift store a few weeks ago. I love the beautiful shine, how elegant it looks and the quality of the fabric. Although I didn’t know exactly what it was, for $2.50 for 4 yards, I had it all. . So, plan B came into play. Plus, I wanted enough left over to make a skirt for my daughter (her skirt is an old McCall 6914

I cut View D at size 14. Usually the big four patterns are very easily constructed, but after checking the ribbon piece I realized it was actually my waist measurement and started creating the skirt.

I did a few things different than the pattern, the big secret is that there is only 1 pocket! I was crunched for time on the pattern testing and worried I’d mess up the whole pocket with the zipper material 🙂 I’m happy to report that I successfully installed a second pocket on my current maxi length skirt, working on the same pattern! But, to save time here I just put in one pocket, on the opposite side of the zipper, and used a scuba vest for it. Although I can give away the secret of how I reach my non-existent bag, I can satisfy my heart’s desire for bags on the one hand 🙂

Can’t Resist Skirt

The other side is finished with an invisible zipper that I wish I had taken the time to choose in a matching shade, but I did what I could with the supplies on hand. The shade is actually a perfect match on the reverse side of the fabric. Because it helps to mix from outside. LOL

I cut a shorter length but didn’t take the full hem allowance to give this mom with little kids less chance of a wardrobe malfunction. I used hem lace to finish my hem and sewed it by hand. Again, matching lace…was going too far here Shannon, when will you learn???

I love this skirt but it is a lot of fabric and heavy. Be careful if you are doing this with heavy fabric. It holds the body longer and weighs a few extra pounds. The pattern calls for lining the skirt with mesh, which I didn’t do because of my fabric choice. But, if you use a drapey fabric, it helps to give a fuller shape.

I am excited to wear this for the holidays this year. It would be perfect for the Nutcracker and church and if you want to invite me to a nice party. I’m excited to share a lightweight fall maxi skirt I’m currently sewing with the same pattern. Hope to have it up on the blog soon!

Available in one of four lengths with an optional drop at the waist, this fully pleated misses skirt will make you feel elegant for any special occasion. Suggested fabrics include brocade, cotton varieties, and taffeta for day-to-evening options.

6-14 and 14-22, I cut a size 14 according to my waist measurements and it fits perfectly. No crazy extra lightness added like I usually find in big 4 patterns.

Yes, I have a D view. It is slightly longer than the pattern due to the reduced hem allowance.

Yes, but the zipper is a bit messy with the pocket installation and I’m never a fan of the way the patterns detail the pleats. For some reason I get mad when I read her instructions. Since I omitted the second pocket in this version due to a time crunch, I didn’t mind the zipper and pocket issue, but I’m currently using the same pattern again and the instructions are a bit confusing. Brittany J Jones has a great sewing video for a side zip skirt with a similar feature. Watch their video for a better explanation of how the model works.

Cheri Navy Pleated Skirt

I love the fullness of the skirt and the dip of the front waistband. I like that there are pockets and a side zipper instead of a back zipper. I don’t like how the skirt is two piece front and back, creating a center front and back seam. I’m not sure why this is needed and without it it allows you to pleat the center front with a box pleat or pleat it in the other direction to have a smooth front and have a seam at the center front and not the back. I love the sash but it was too much in this thick fabric so I went with a dip in the front instead and a more detailed waist.

I love this skirt and am currently working on a second, more casual version of the maxi skirt. I think it’s a bit much for beginners with the pocket and zipper installation and the large amount of fabric you’re working with. There are simple pleated skirt options for new sewing.

I love the skirt for a dressy and casual option. This is a fabric hog, so keep that in mind when choosing your skirt length. If you like pocket skirts, side zippers and flounces, this skirt is for you. If you don’t want a full pleated skirt silhouette, you probably aren’t considering this pattern anyway 🙂

About 18 years ago I decided to teach myself how to sew. Long before the blogs and resources available today, that often meant harm. But I never let it go because I love it so much. Today, I love helping others start their own nutritional journeys. You can read more about me and my family here.
