Once you get past the price, the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack is a worthy device that wins because of its deep integration with iOS. It’s a handy accessory for iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 owners, but it’s hardly necessary.

It’s been easy to find the usual calls for high prices, lack of features, and the like in any online discussion about chargers. After spending some time with it though, it’s clear that it serves its purpose very well.
It’s easily the best value MagSafe-branded accessory I’ve used since Tech was reborn as the magnetic iPhone system with the iPhone 12.
. There are no buttons anywhere, just a Lightning connector and an LED that indicates when it’s charging or charging.
Size-wise, it’s roughly the same width as the iPhone 12 mini. It is small enough to slip into a pocket with a phone (11 meters thick) and it is very light (113 grams).

There is one color option – white, with a gray back. I can see it getting dirty over time, especially if you keep it in your jeans, so it would have been nice to have a darker color available.
The outer shell is made of soft plastic with a nice, attractive finish and a rubber pad on the back to ensure it sticks to your phone. It’s all very simple and stylish.
There are some concerns about how strong the magnets in these MagSafe accessories are. For example, the wallet has received some criticism for firing too easily. I’ve found the connection between the battery pack and the phone to be strong, even more so if you have a case on.
The bottom has a little wobble and if you really shake the phone it will fall off, but you probably shouldn’t shake your phone in the first place.

It’s no match for bulky packs like the Anker that can keep your phone close at hand for a weekend at Glastonbury or a camping trip.
Instead, it’s more for situations where you’re running for the last tube and your phone is close to red, or waiting for someone to call and you’re away from the plug.
This aim is evident in both the size of the pack itself and the rather small 1460mAh battery. I tested it with all three iPhone 12 sizes (12 Mini, 12 and 12 Pro Max) and it couldn’t fully charge any of them.
On the iPhone 12 mini, it took a completely drained device up to 78%; Up to 60 percent from iPhone 12 and up to 49 percent from iPhone 12 Pro Max. Of course, these numbers will vary, but this is a handy guide.

Interestingly, the first time you connect the plug-in to your phone, you’ll get a pop-up saying it won’t try to charge your phone above 90%. This makes sense, as filling that last 10% requires a lot of pounding, and Apple clearly doesn’t think the tradeoff in performance is worth it. If you don’t agree and want to push it further, there is an option to override these restrictions in the control center.
When you remove the magnetic battery pack from the back of your phone, it charges at 5W. It’s quite slow, but the same speed that the Anker 5K delivers. 5W is about the same as the old plugs that came with the iPhone up to the 11 series and feels too slow if you’re used to something faster. For example, the MagSafe battery pack took 120 minutes to charge the 12 Pro Max until it died.
Another use for the MagSafe battery pack is as a portable 15W wireless charger. It works when the battery is connected to a fast USB-C port. As MagSafe is backwards compatible with Qi, it will also charge other phones and accessories such as AirPods Pro – but always at a maximum of 5W. I plugged in my Pixel 5 and it charges fine.
There are several ways to top up a MagSafe battery pack when it runs out. You can plug the Lightning cable into the bottom and charge from there, or connect it to the back of the iPhone 12 series and plug the cable into the iPhone. It will then intelligently charge both the phone and the battery pack.

The unique way to charge is when you connect the battery to the iPhone and then plug the cable into the battery itself. It then uses reverse wireless charging to juice up both devices. This is another area where the MagSafe battery pack shines. Other similar packs I’ve tested require separate charging from the phone, but due to Apple’s control of the ecosystem, both can be charged with a single cable. It’s worth noting that you don’t get a cable with the battery pack, so you’ll need a cable from your iPhone.
What you can’t do is use it to charge other devices with the cable. This is the limit of electricity that is not capable of charging in both directions. If you want to share power with a friend here, you’ll have to hope they have a Qi-enabled phone.
Other parts of iOS 14.7 also have deep integration. You’ll get a popup every time you connect the pack with a charging update, and it’ll also appear in the handy iOS battery widget. If you’ve ever used a previous iPhone battery case, you’ll be familiar with this one because it’s something you don’t get with third-party products. It’s a shame that Apple doesn’t allow device manufacturers access to these parts of the operating system.
You need extra juice in iPhone 12: It’s a small, compact accessory that gives you extra charge when you need it most. It also boasts excellent integration with iOS.

There’s no getting around it – at £99/$99, it’s value added. But for many people I think it’s totally worth it.
