Huge Smartphone Releases Coming In February

The Apple AirTag is a device I was born to review — and not in a good way. I’m so bad at misplacing my keys around the house that my family has turned it into a game, I hide my keys when I don’t put them where they should go.

Surprisingly, using the AirTag feels like a game in itself, as the Precision Finding feature can guide you to your missing items with your iPhone, showing distances to unmoved objects and directional arrows. It’s like “You’re Hot” done digitally. This feature is what sets AirTag apart from most of the competition.

While there’s room for improvement, especially in the privacy department, my review of the AirTag shows why Apple’s device is on the best list of researchers.

AirTag costs $29 for a pack of 1 and you can buy a pack of 4 for $99. In comparison, the Samsung GalaxySmartTag Plus offers Ultra Wideband coverage, but retails for $39. TheTile Procosts $35, and the Tile Milecosts $25.

Like other trackers and product trackers, the AirTag offers a Bluetooth connection for close range, but it goes a step further with Ultra Wideband.

If you have an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, both of which have the U1 chip, you can use the AirTag Precision Finding feature. Your iPhone uses UWB to determine the distance and direction of lost objects, and analyzes input from your phone’s camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope.

This is what allows you to see pictures, cheers and sounds to guide you to what you are missing.

About the size of a coat, the AirTag is extremely small, measuring just 1.26 inches by 0.31 inches. It weighs only 0.39 kg.

AirTag is IP67 rated, which means it can survive in water for 30 minutes. You can also customize your AirTag with a free search engine with letters or emoji.

My biggest complaint about the AirTag is that it doesn’t last very long. After just a few days, the AirTag stored in Apple’s plastic case showed scuff marks. At first I thought it was just a stain that I could wipe off, but not much.

This convenience is one of the best things about AirTag. When you take the AirTag out of the box, you simply pull the battery tag and bring the device closer to your iPhone. My iPhone 12 automatically recognized AirTag and went through setup. Just note that you must be on iOS 14.5.

Find My App comes out of there, asking me to name the AirTag you choose from the list (key, bag, luggage, bag, etc.). After registering the AirTag to my Apple ID, it was good to go. The Find My app displays your item and shows you three main options available: advanced search, audio playback and map guidance.

Like other trackers and product trackers, the AirTag offers a Bluetooth connection so you can get close. But it goes one step further with ultra broadband.

If you have an iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, both of which have the U1 chip, you can use the AirTag Precision Finding feature. Your iPhone uses UWB to determine the distance and direction of objects you miss, and analyzes input from your phone’s camera, ARKit, accelerometer and gyroscope.

Putting it all together is what helps you find signs, sounds and sounds to guide you to what you’ve been missing.

I tried placing my keys around the house with the AirTag, and the device generally worked fine. But I wouldn’t say AirTag is perfect.

After placing the AirTag about 30 feet in the living room under the bed, connected to the key, I finished my Find app. I clicked on Find, and the iPhone 12 showed a field of spinning dots (I mean show it thinks) and a few seconds later my iPhone showed how many meters the AirTag was.

As I approached the AirTag, an arrow appeared on the screen indicating how close I was to my key. I also hit the Play Sound button (available on iPhone, iPad and Mac now) to see if I could hear the AirTag under the bed. I could hear the AirTag sound, but it wasn’t very loud.

This is one of my few complaints about the AirTag. The device has a very large surface area to transmit sound, so you’ll probably need to be in line with the lost object to hear the AirTag, especially if it’s under something.

As I approached the key, an arrow circled on my iPhone screen — like a bullseye — and the phone vibrated. the message is complete.

I did a few more tests with a different AirTag in my bag, and I was very impressed. I could hear the beeping from the next room, and I could generally begin tracking well within 13 to 18 feet. However, if you are too far away, you won’t be able to play the sound; my iphone told me that AirTag is not available and is going around.

Apple has built in a lot of security features with AirTag to protect your privacy and prevent tracking, but it’s clear that there’s room for improvement. For example, you can only see where your AirTag is and your data and history are never stored on the AirTag. Apple also says that all location information is stored and that Apple does not know where your AirTag is located.

To reduce people tracking, your iPhone can alert you when your AirTag is not with you. And you’ll be able to play audio on that rogue AirTag to identify it and get instructions on how to disable it. Additionally, an AirTag that has been separated from its owner for an unknown period of time will start playing a sound when it is moved, alerting you to its presence.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t specify how long it takes to receive these security patches, unfortunately. You will also receive security when you return home if the AirTag does not appear to be registered.

But what about when you’re not at home? You will not receive a notification until the end of the day. Note that you will only receive notifications if you are using iOS 14.5.

If you have an Android phone, it may take up to three days for the AirTag itself to release the audio. That’s a long time. In a statement to Gizmodo, Apple said it can “modify the nature and timing of these volatile elements in the atmosphere to further improve our prevention.” (Apple has released an Android app that lets you scan fingerprints for AirTags.)

Since early 2022, we’ve seen multiple reports of women telling police that their iPhones have reported anonymous AirTags revealing their travels, as well as AirTags being used by car thieves to locate wanted vehicles.

The AirTag uses a standard CR2032 coin-cell battery, which Apple says is rated to last a year. A battery would be nice, but that would result in a large tracker.

Apple Computers sells several accessories for the AirTag, including the AirTag Leather Ring ($35), the AirTag Leather Loop ($39), and the AirTag Loop ($29). If you’re feeling really fancy, there’s also a selection of AirTag Hermès leather accessories that start at $299 and go up to $449.

AirTag devices will also be available from Belkin, Nomad, Spigen Moment, Dbrand and more. Belkin’s AirTag device starts at $12.95

It would be nice if AirTag supported Android phones, but I’m not surprised that Apple wants you to stick to its ecosystem. Android phone owners are better off with the $34.99 Tile Pro, which is rugged and has a 400-foot range. Plus, unlike the AirTag, it has a built-in button to locate your phone.

The $39 Samsung Galaxy SmartTag Plus goes one step further with its own Ultra Wideband, which uses augmented reality to find things you’ve missed; not just arrows, you will be able to see the dots around the object you missed using the live camera of your Galaxy phone. Additionally, the SmartTag Plus’ button can help you perform various home commands, such as turning off the lights while you’re away.

I wish the design was more durable and the sound louder, but overall the Apple AirTag is worth the investment and was worth the wait.
