At a time when most offline gamers firmly believe that consumers don’t understand chipsets well, Xiaomi’s use of Snapdragon chips at an affordable price has brought instant fame to the brand and a chance for them to take the top spot on the podium. This, of course, took a huge toll on MediaTek’s market share and almost wiped it out in the online domain.

Fast-forward to 2019 and you’ll find that even big offline players like Oppo and Vivo are aggressively pushing powerful Snapdragon chipsets online in the affordable space, accelerating MediaTek’s big comeback with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Last year, Xiaomi updated the cheap MediaTek chips in the Redmi 6 series, but it turned out to be a disaster. Of course, the gaming-focused MediaTek Helio G90T powering the new Note is incredibly powerful, and yes, the Note 8 Pro offers a lot more than just a chipset.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back, while Xiaomi makes a lot of use of real glass on its phones. The use of glass makes the phone feel premium, but we say design shouldn’t be reduced to labels like plastic and glass. The relatively cheap and non-ergonomic appearance of the regular glass-body Note 8 next door should be proof enough.
However, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is very comfortable to hold and use and looks quite premium for its price. The bezels around the display (and below as well) are very narrow, and the selfie camera sits inside a V-shaped notch. The chrome bezel on the side is plastic, not metal.
The quad-camera module on the back protrudes slightly and has a capacitive fingerprint sensor, which you can easily pass off as a fourth camera sensor at a distance. This long cam system doesn’t scratch easily (so far), but collects a lot of dirt and grime around the edges.

Speaking of dirt, the Note 8 Pro is IP52 certified, but don’t confuse that with water resistance. The rating claims it is “protected against limited dust ingress” and “protected against splashing water below 15 degrees vertical.” In other words, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is partially protected against dirt and cannot withstand low-pressure water jets or submersion. It’s not clear, but at least it’s something. right?
The charging port is USB Type-C and the phone retains an IR blaster and a 3.5mm audio jack. The Indian variant also has a dedicated micro SD card slot (a first for the Redmi Note series).
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 500 Nits brightness and HDR certified IPS LCD display. The software has dark mode and color adjustment options. We’ve heard reports of strange touch issues with the Note 8 Pro’s screen, but we haven’t encountered any at our retail location.
The extra-large 6.53-inch screen is sharp and easy to see outdoors. Whites are bluish and warm mode does little to correct this. MIUI has display customization options and you can customize the screen to your liking. Colors and contrast are reasonable compared to other phones in this segment.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is DRM L1 certified, but currently doesn’t support HD or HDR streaming on apps like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Let’s talk about the chipset first. MediaTek’s Helio G90T is a 12nm process-based chipset that can be seen as the successor to the Helio P90. The most notable upgrade is the latest Cortex-A76 performance cores and the Mali G76 MP4 GPU. The 6 power cores you’ll use regularly remain the same Cortex-A55.
The chipset is backed by multiple LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 storage (8GB RAM and 128GB storage).
The Note 8 Pro’s gaming performance is excellent. We didn’t experience any issues while playing demanding games or in daily use. Xiaomi has also added ‘Liquid Cooling’ and a copper heat-dissipating plate so that performance can be extended for long-term gaming. We noticed a rise in temperature during prolonged gaming, but we didn’t notice any drop in performance. Xiaomi also talked about the Wi-Fi X antenna, a feature that transfers the Wi-Fi connection from the antenna you cover to the free antenna to avoid lag.

The day-to-day experience is not as smooth. In the first week, we noticed frequent app crashes and freezes, which can be attributed to MediaTek or MIUI flaws.
The software is the familiar MIUI 10 based on Android Pie. As for MIUI 11, Xiaomi will be the first to update Snapdragon-powered phones to the new interface, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro will receive it in the final phase from December 18 to December 26. Last year’s MIUI had no updates. a lot of. performance reliability. We’ve found that many of these updates break more than they fix, and thus don’t hold the same optimism as before.
The phone comes with tons of pre-installed apps and doesn’t make any ad-free claims like the Xiaomi K20 series. These ads and plaques on the phone take away from the premium feel. The good thing is that users can still disable ads from most places and disable many pre-installed apps.
This time the phone has Alexa built in and it responds to two hot words – Alexa and Ok Google – out of the box. Alexa is also integrated with the Mi Remote app and can change channels on the TV using the Mi Remote app on the Note 8 Pro and the IR blaster.

We have an update waiting to improve Alexa functionality on our phone. Apparently, that didn’t help the healing much. Most of the time Alexa is not responding even after we set it as default assistant. Our second Redmi Note 8 retail unit has Alexa working, but performance is still unchanged.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has quad rear cameras with a 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor on the front. We tested the sensor on the Realme XT and Galaxy A70s, and in both cases the image quality was poor compared to the 48MP sensors that have been popular all year.
This is understandable, as the underlying technology remains the same, and at 64 MP you basically get a jump in resolution.
However, the software adjustments are great. We noticed that the phone changes the contrast and sharpens the images too much, but the end result should be more pleasing to the consumer in India.

In sunlight, the Redmi Note 8 Pro can capture better detail than any other 64MP phone we’ve seen. Surprisingly, the results are impressive even at the full 64 MP resolution.
The camera works well in low light. Night mode isn’t the best in class, but it’s still good and we used it a lot.
Macro mode lets you get up close, but it’s still difficult to get decent photos, especially indoors.
The wide-angle camera and telephoto sensor are run of the mill offerings and aren’t much to write home about.

Video recording is also good enough for the price, but not great. You can shoot 1080p slow motion videos at 240fps. 720p@960fps slow motion is available, but these videos are software interpolated and not really usable for us.
Redmi Note 8 Pro has a large 4500 mAh battery that comfortably lasts for more than a day. Xiaomi puts a fast charger in the box, but it’s only fast.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is an interesting phone and turns out to be even better than our first impressions. Better than Realme XT? Well, we say no. The Redmi Note 8 Pro offers a slightly better gaming experience, and we’d say it has the edge in terms of camera performance, but the XT, with its AMOLED screen, faster VOOC charging, ad-free interface, and streamlined design. still stands as a premium offering.
That said, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is an easy proposition, especially for gaming-oriented consumers.
