The Pentel Fitline highlighter set includes the usual basics–yellow, pink, orange, green, and blue. They are double ended, with a classic chisel tip on one end and a 1 mm bullet felt tip on the other. They are designed to be able to highlight and record quickly, although this has always confused me a bit. Generally, the ink is light enough to highlight poorly to read notes, and the ink is dark enough to read poorly to highlight. However, the design has continued in many brands, so maybe something is missing.

It is, in almost every way, your standard highlight. However, they distinguish themselves by two features. One is a notched neck that allows the tip of the chisel to be slightly bent for easier sharpening on curved glass. This is an interesting feature in theory, but I didn’t see much distortion in my example. To bend it, I had to press down hard on the ends and there was a risk of ink bleeding. They may be more flexible in their use. And because of its other unique feature–it can be recharged–it really should be destroyed. Refills are only for pigment and do not include replacement tips, so eventually the tip will go through a wear and tear phase and become obsolete – at which point the entire pen will need to be replaced.

These are on the pricier side for standard highlighters at $1.75 each. And refills are $1.40–pretty high for pigment. The cost makes sense if you get a replacement tip, and I wonder if the felt tips will last more than a few fills.
Tips for good and efficient writing. The ink spreads evenly and there are no bleeding or show-through problems, even on cheap printer paper. There is some smearing with rollerball and gel pen inks, but surprisingly none with fountain pen inks. It also works well with pencil, ballpoint, and printer ink.
The clip is sturdy and has enough space between it and the body to clip onto the book cover. The cap attaches securely and both sides can be attached to one another, but the cute end cap is small – so be careful not to lose it.
Overall, I think this is a good quality school resource, if a bit on the pricier side. They work well, but can’t be anything groundbreaking. However, for a highlight, my only hope is practicality, and this one does it well.

Gel highlights are often a better choice for fountain pen inks, but they also caused ballpoint feathers in our tests. Smudge depends on the highlight formula and writing media, as well as the paper you’re using, so it’s best to test highlighting with a specific ink and paper before highlighting most text.
