Update Mi New Router Review – The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition can be described as the centerpiece of Xiaomi’s smart ecosystem project. At last month’s Smarter Living 2022 event, Xiaomi launched a series of smart devices. While Xiaomi is the leading smartphone brand in India, it also wants to be the leading brand in the IoT ecosystem. From home security to smart lighting to computers, Xiaomi has expanded its product line beyond smartphones.

All these devices need a way to connect to the internet and Xiaomi also wants to be the provider of this way with the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition. I have bought a few Mi smart LED bulbs over the years, and last week I reviewed the Mi 360° Home Security Camera 2K Pro. So, does the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition add value to the brand’s IoT ecosystem? That is what I try to answer in this review.

With its devices, Xiaomi has adopted a design language that ranges from extravagant to minimalist at best. The Mi Water Purifier is an example of a minimalist design in action, while the Mi 11 Ultra (review) looks over-the-top with a great camera design. When it comes to the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition, Xiaomi turned to the minimalist design that seems to be the common denominator in all its smart devices.

While routers tend to have a utilitarian or gaming-centric design, the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition comes in a matte white finish designed to blend into your home but remain invisible.

The router has a clean look but offers the class of a device built with beauty in mind. With its rounded corners and geometric shape, the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition makes an unusual statement among wireless routers.

The top panel is Mi-branded and there are two lights that show system status and network status. The system status indicator should be solid blue to indicate that it is working normally, while a flashing network status light means that it is sending or receiving data. There are four antennas up, and as far as the interface, you get one WAN port and two LAN ports. There is also a power connector and a reset button on the back of the device.

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition comes with a 12V @ 1A power adapter, but no Ethernet cable is provided with the device. There is also no USB port, which can be a limitation for those who want to connect devices such as printers directly to the network.

Xiaomi 10 Gb Router Was Introduced Along With 13 Series Phones

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is a dual-band router and therefore more flexible than single-band routers. In the case of a single-band router, all devices use the same 2.4 GHz frequency. As a result, there is a chance for all Wi-Fi signals to cross.

With a dual-band router like Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition, you can switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies and eliminate interference between these frequency bands. However, it is important to note that not all devices are compatible with the 5GHz frequency band. For example, the Yi Dome camera installed in my house only works in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. For the purpose of this review, I compared the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition with the TP-Link AC1200 Archer A6 with 4 antennas, together. a Dual Antenna TP-Link TL-WR840N.

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition will be a huge upgrade over the standard dual-antenna router seen here.

The first thing I noticed is that Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition and TP-Link AC1200 Archer A6 are able to reach areas not covered by TP-Link TL-WR840N. This is mainly due to the four high-gain antennas that allow for maximum signal transmission. This is great for a modest home, but if you live in a large home, you’ll be better off buying a mesh WiFi system.

During my time using the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition for more than two weeks, I have never seen signal drops or any similar situation where the WiFi signal does not reach me. With a built-in power amplifier and low noise amplifier, the WiFi signal can reach even through walls. Besides the strength of the WiFi signal, the next important thing about any router is the maximum speed possible.

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition, as its name suggests, is capable of Gigabit speeds. The AC1200 router, which means that it supports a bandwidth of up to 1200Mbps. Although it is good to have high bandwidth support, the speed you get depends on your ISP (Internet Service Provider). You cannot get 100 Mbps with a 50 Mbps connection. With the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition, you are buying a future-proof device that Gigabit speeds have become commonplace.

The real benefit of this router becomes clear when you connect multiple devices at the same time. Xiaomi says you can connect up to 128 devices to the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition. With every device becoming smarter and able to connect to the internet, this is one area where you can prepare for the future. I had two laptops, an iPad, a TV, some Alexa smart speakers, smart light bulbs, and security cameras connected to the router. Both worked perfectly and with built-in cooling, the router never overheated or seemed to limit bandwidth for good performance.

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition comes with a robust app to manage the router. The first thing I noticed when I replaced my TP-Link router was a message on my iPad saying the security is weak. This was because the WiFi encryption was set to Mixed (your WPA/WPA2) and changing the encryption to Strong (only WPA2) fixed this error. As you can see in the picture above, changing these settings is very easy.

Initially, the router setup shows two different routers that provide 2.4GHz band and 5GHz band connection. However, you can go to this router setup panel and select the Smart Connect option (as seen above) to allow the router to use a known name and automatically. select between frequency bands. It’s a good control if you don’t want to worry about WiFi router names and choose for yourself which device connects to which frequency band.

MiWiFi web interface management is often displayed as “Not Secure”. I contacted Xiaomi to understand the reason for this, considering that security is important for all of us. Xiaomi told me that this is mainly due to the self-signed certificate not being accepted by most browsers. This is the case with TP-Link as well and Xiaomi assured me that the connection is secure regardless of what the browser displays when connecting via HTTPS.

In addition to the router management interface, Xiaomi also offers the Mi WiFi app which can be used to view the list of devices connected to your network, add or remove devices, and manage other settings. The clean app has two tabs called Mi Router and Toolbox. The Mi Router tab shows all connected devices and the toolbox allows you to check the firewall, upgrade the WiFi connection and even change the name of the router.

The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition works well for homes measuring 500 to 1,000 square feet. Even with about a dozen devices connected at the same time, it’s not a problem. The true beauty of the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition comes in the form of its ability to allocate frequency bands to devices and maintain a consistent connection in the room. However, it is not much different from the aforementioned TP-Link Archer A6.

Xiaomi Mi Router Pro Review: Beautiful, Powerful But

In fact, the Archer has four Gigabit LAN ports, as opposed to two on the Mi. It also supports WPA3, which is an improved implementation of WPA2. The Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is priced at Rs 2,199, while the TP-Link Archer A6 is priced at Rs 2,499. If you want the extra LAN ports and WPA3 security, then it’s worth the extra money. Otherwise, the Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition is an affordable option for most homes, offering a robust ecosystem and seamless connectivity to devices installed in your home.

Xiaomi has been in the network game for a long time. As with many areas of the product it enters, the Chinese giant makes it very popular at the bottom of the market, bringing a strong value proposition and routers are no different. The original Mi Wi-Fi AC router was a huge success with its attractive price and still works and listens
