If you’re a woman, you’ve probably heard those words before, or at least some version of them. It’s the guy’s words on a bad date that make you feel guilty for not having fun; or the boss taking credit for their work during a meeting; or, who are we kidding, it could be a random guy trying to grab an empty seat on the subway.

Of course, in this case, those words have something to do with complex alien technology and a secret power core, but still. They hit home.

The film is very aware of its status as the first female lead film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (It only took 21 takes to get here, but hey, who’s counting?) There’s even a power montage that’s the cinematic equivalent of Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.” But it works. The movie doesn’t just fill in some of the gaps in the MCU that we’ll have to step into

It’s an unusual origin story. We don’t know who she is, but neither does she. He actually comes with two backstories: In one life, he is Vers, a Kree “warrior hero” who lives on the planet Hala, which is ruled by an AI leader called the Supreme Intelligence. In the other, it’s Carol Danvers, a US Air Force pilot who loves karaoke and Guns & Roses T-shirts. Captain Marvel (aka the version that flies in the blue and red suit and glows with firepower) is the sum of those dual identities. (I won’t spoil how this happens or why. Check it out!)

When we first meet on Vers, he has been living in the Kree for six years, since arriving there with no memories or past. She was trained as part of a group of elite warriors led by Yon-Rogg, whose mission is to eradicate a threat posed by the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens bent on infiltrating other planets. During a mission gone wrong, he crashes on Earth (in that famous Blockbuster from the trailer) circa 1995, where he teams up with a young Nick Fury (a noticeably aged Samuel L. Jackson). As the two fight some stray Skrulls (led by a hilarious Ben Mendelsohn), Vers begins to realize that the key to his past is in C-53 (that’s the Kree name for Earth, we’re not that special).

Yes, it’s a little complicated, and yes, it’s very funny that everyone in the movie goes out of their way to point out that one of the character’s names is Mar-Vell (two words!), but

. She is perfectly represented in this nod to the 80s and 90s, and would make a great pairing with Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) from

(and that’s the only comparison you’ll get from me), she’s a freak who doesn’t feel weighed down by the limitations of normal women, or even knows how to care about them.

C0, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who co-wrote the screenplay with Geneva Robertson-Dworet), the film offers a refreshing take on tired tropes. Instead of relying on a male love interest to emotionally trigger Danvers’ memories, they turn to her best friend and fellow pilot, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch, who is arguably the film’s rising star). Theirs feels like a real, deep friendship between two women, which I’ve rarely seen in a genre like this.

Ant Man And The Wasp: Quantumania’ Review: It’s Kang’s Movie

Marvel has owned the superhero comedy genre since 2015 when they decided to make a real movie about a guy who plays with ants.

. The dialogue is tongue-in-cheek and the pace of the film flows beautifully thanks to the remarkable chemistry between Larson and Jackson, friends we never knew we needed. (He was soon joined by Goose, the most charismatic cat in cinema.) And who is the genius who cast Annette Bening as the Supreme Intelligence?

The 90’s setting gives Captain Marvel a chance to unleash his creativity. The soundtrack is a stream of hits from No Doubt to Nirvana, the costumes range from grunge to space-chic, and there’s even a Radio Shack joke. That said, viewers will benefit from at least some background knowledge of previous Marvel films. For the uninitiated,

Movies (If you don’t already know who Nick Fury is, well, I should tell you that you’re in for a ride.) But even non-Marvel experts will likely enjoy the film’s action and overall plot. although they miss some of the bigger ones in tights.

The release date of Marvel’s first solo female superhero movie was deliberately timed to coincide with International Women’s Day. But is this a women’s party or a bit cynical? International Women’s Day has become a media, cultural and commercial event in recent years. This year, for example, alongside Captain Marvel, soap operas Emmerdale and Neighbors announced special episodes with an all-female cast and crew.

It’s a great marketing ploy, but the line between celebration and cynical cash-in is fine. Several commentators have criticized the commercialization of IWD and the focus of projects such as these press releases on raising awareness of the most serious issues affecting women globally.

Concentrating the need for greater female visibility (both behind and in front of the cameras) around a single day also risks women’s participation becoming a “special” or unusual event rather than something so egalitarian as to become banal. and insignificant

Captain Marvel is one of the most anticipated films of 2019 and is one of the most established brands in the world of comics. Captain Marvel and her alter ego Carol Danvers have a long history in the Marvel Universe (and indeed in the DC Universe, with her version also being an alias of the star of the upcoming film Shazam).

Like almost everything in comics, it’s complicated. Danvers only took on the mantle of Captain Marvel, a role that has had several inhabitants, much like Spider-Man.
