I’m still amazed that you can get a 5,245 smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED display and two-day battery life. For anyone who likes content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is the right choice, but don’t expect it to impress in other areas.

The Galaxy M smartphones, which are very popular in India, try to pack premium specs into an affordable form factor – at least on paper. The series recently got a facelift in 2020 and one of those phones, the Samsung Galaxy M31, has hit the UK market.
The Galaxy A series has done a great job with the mid-range, but can Samsung pull off the same trick down the price scale? It’s time to find out.
At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and 191g, the Galaxy M31 is a large phone by modern standards. After recently getting used to the lightweight Pixel 3a XL, the M31 felt like a mammoth in comparison. But with that added weight, it lets you know that even though it’s on the cheaper end of the spectrum, it’s still a solid product.
Inside this space, the phone has a 6.4-inch display with a minimal twin bezel at the bottom. 5,245 only, I wonder how compromised the front elements of the phone are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit at the bottom).

However, once you turn on the phone, things feel a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic base is an absolute magnet for fingerprints, and the smooth body doesn’t grip your hands very well. If you’re not completely confident in your ability to never drop your phone, we recommend considering a case just to be on the safe side.
Although the camera here is small, the array of four camera sensors doesn’t feel like the phone is lying in your pocket or on a table facing the screen.
Similar to the A series, Samsung is focusing on three key features when marketing the M series: display, camera and battery life. While we’ll get to the latter two in a moment, I’m happy to report that Samsung nailed the M31’s screen, which is the phone’s best feature (besides the price).
The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen uses a juicy AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, which means that whatever’s on the screen, whether it’s the homepage wallpaper or a second viewing of The Last Dance on Netflix (thanks), always stands out.

Of course, even with that premium FHD+ resolution, you’ll have to deal with a stock cutout if you want to immerse yourself in the full-screen experience. Admittedly, it’s small compared to Apple’s now outdated shelves, but it’s still there.
The only minor issue is that unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a native 60Hz display. But considering how many phones at this price point jump to 90Hz, that’s forgivable.
Because I’m used to using an older and flawless version of Android 10 for my Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s custom skin feels pretty bad, though not the worst.
For example, there’s very little in the way of apps other than Samsung’s various apps that serve their purpose, but I don’t see why you’d need to use the Galaxy Store when you have the Google App Store.

Fortunately, for the M31, despite its low price, everything works well. This is due to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC and a solid 6GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect mind-blowing speed with the M31, but this setup does a pretty decent job.
The dedicated fingerprint sensor, for example, is fast and reliable (probably more so than the fingerprint sensors you’ll find on more expensive phones). The same goes for opening the page, with a great animation that pops up from under the front camera to let you know it’s working.
A persistently annoying problem that continued to crop up was the inexplicable mismatch of certain clothing items. Although this seems to have evened out after a few software updates, at first the phone would disconnect regularly with my Whoop 3.0 Band smartwatch and TicWatch C2 Plus. If you’re not a smartwatch fan, you’ll never run into this problem, but for a fitness fanatic like me, who likes to track health stats, it’s become a pain in the ass.
If you enjoy mobile gaming on your lunch break, the M31 should get you through most titles – just don’t plan on running Fortnite anytime soon. As the developer has repeatedly pointed out, the Galaxy M31 is not currently one of the phones optimized for playing Fortnite, and when we got into the game, we found the noise to be unplayable. Surprisingly, the M31 had no problem running online matches on Call of Duty: Mobile, and smaller titles like Alto Odyssey performed well.

I blame it on my outdated laptop’s somewhat weak Wi-Fi connection, but in this new home working environment, I’ve decided to use the phone as my primary device of choice for zooming in, listening to music, tracking my indoor workouts, and enjoying YouTube content during lunch. Suffice it to say, I pushed the Galaxy M31’s battery through the paces, but it put up an amazing fight.
With an impressive 6000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 lasted about two days on a single charge, most of the time with Wi-Fi connected, Bluetooth turned on, multiple wearables and a pair of wireless earbuds. thrown in for good measure. This is in addition to the heavy usage measures I mentioned earlier. Simply put, you’d have to be a serious procrastinator to even consider draining your battery completely in one day.

The only downside is the supposed 15W fast charging input, which I beg to differ. When plugged in, it took over two hours to reach a full charge of 8%. If it’s part of your routine to charge your phone at night, you’ll never have a problem here, but the need for a quick charge before you leave the house is out of the question.

On paper, the promise of a Samsung smartphone with four rear cameras under 250 pounds is unfortunately not true. On the back, you’ll find a 64-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor, and everyone’s favorite 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera.
Just kidding, I don’t share the same disdain for smartphone macro cameras as some other reviewers, and it’s interesting to see a bug or flower being artistically captured, but let’s face it, the real meat and potatoes of the Ultra is the be-all and end-all of cameras.
Starting with the latter, I was pleasantly surprised at how vibrant shots could be with the M31’s main sensor. For example, my beautifully posed portrait of my fiancé has a natural bokeh effect and the colors pop without saturation.
It’s only when you start zooming into portraits that you’ll notice the camera’s inability to capture fine details, a problem that’s even more pronounced when swapping out the M31’s ultra-wide lens.

Zooming into any wide-angle shots taken with the M31 is particularly revealing of the lack of detail. I understand the appeal of a wide-angle sensor, but if it’s going to perform poorly, I’d see the money invested in upgrading the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a has a single rear sensor, but it benefits from being one of the best smartphones for photography.
