The good news is that this phone has all the features you’d expect from a solid phone under $15,000. The bad news is that the Galaxy M31’s design and specific specs may not hold up well against other better-looking and more powerful smartphones coming soon in this segment.

As we mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy M31 has a familiar design. It resembles the Galaxy M30s in that it has a plastic unibody panel at the back, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square camera module at the top left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the phone light (even though it packs a big battery), it’s less attractive when compared to all-glass phones like the Redmi Note 8 Pro ( review ).
The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar, welcoming you with the same 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display as its predecessor. At the top of the display is the selfie camera and a U-shaped notch with a very thick chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a bit heavy in your hand, making it tiring to hold it for a while. The smartphone is available in Blue, Black and Red color options. Thanks to the glossy back panel, the Galaxy M31 picks up fingerprints and smudges with ease, which was most noticeable on the black color variant we received for review. Also, if you leave it on a table or in your pocket with your keys, the back panel gets scratched easily.
The volume and power buttons are placed high on the right side of the frame, but they’re not always easy to access with one hand. The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display looks beautiful with vivid, saturated colors and excellent viewing angles. The brightness level of the display is also excellent, so you can read the screen without any problem even in bright sunlight. The FHD+ screen is crisp and delivers crisp video content at 1080p resolution. Widevine L1 support allows the Galaxy M31 to stream Netflix and Amazon Prime video content in full HD resolution.
The Galaxy M31’s biggest upgrade is the camera. The smartphone sports a 64MP quad camera setup on the back, as opposed to the Galaxy M30s’ 48MP triple camera system. The new setup includes a high resolution 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GW1 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra wide angle lens, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro lens. The upgraded setup is more versatile, giving users more ways to take pictures.
The Galaxy M31’s main camera takes good photos in daylight. When Scene Optimizer is enabled, the camera uses a lot of software processing to improve colors. This is preferred over a more natural tone. So if you burn flowers for example, greens will look green and roses will turn red. The photo is warm and cannot capture natural white tones. In general, we found that photos taken during the day lacked contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera can focus on subjects quickly during the day, but it gets a little shaky after dark. By default, the main camera shoots at 16MP and uses pixel binning to deliver bright, sharp photos. You can manually change the aspect ratio to 3:4 64MP to take higher resolution photos. However, 64MP photos look dark and HDR is not supported, so they should only be used in daylight environments when capturing wide landscapes to zoom in later.

Following the main camera, the Samsung Galaxy M31’s 8MP wide-angle camera captures wide-angle shots that are comfortable even during the day. As long as you zoom in and don’t see pixels, colors are good and show lots of detail. Portrait mode with live focus mode can take shots with some level of bokeh as long as the blur effect is not overwhelming. Skin tones look warm and soft, but detail is excellent.
Finally, there’s a 5MP macro camera that lets you get up to 3cm closer to your subject. Again, a macro camera is best used during the day for creative close-up shots. As long as the subject is still, the macro looks sharp and detailed. However, colors look muted and washed out compared to the natural bokeh you can capture using the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 is great at recording videos. Both front and rear cameras can record UHD videos. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which is very good at avoiding video jitter when recording handheld.
Samsung has also upgraded the front camera from 16MP to 32MP. In other words, the Galaxy M31 lets you take clear selfies. It’s true, the selfie camera accurately captures details in clothes and hair, but smoothes out faces even when Beauty mode is turned off. The front camera also supports Live Focus, which lets you adjust the bokeh intensity in real time. The greater the bokeh effect, the more unnatural the separation of the subject.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with versatile camera settings that allow you to take pictures from different perspectives. The 64MP quad-camera system feels like a nice upgrade thanks to the added macro lens, but it doesn’t feel like the best quad-camera setup compared to the competition in this segment.
Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by 2.3GHz Exynos 9611 octa-core chipset based on 10nm process and has Mali G72 MP3 GPU. This is the same processor that powers the Galaxy M30s. Samsung has increased the base version from 4GB RAM to 6GB RAM. It should provide a smooth multitasking experience. The smartphone comes in 64GB and 128GB storage versions, which can be expanded up to 512GB using a microSD card.
Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy M31 felt as snappy as you’d expect from a brand new smartphone. A UI 2.0 scrolled smoothly and apps opened quickly. In a week of use, I didn’t experience any slowdowns or lags when using different apps every day, such as messaging and browsing social media.
The Exynos 9611 is a decent mid-range processor that can handle everyday tasks with ease. You can also run graphics-intensive games like PUBG by default at high graphics and framerate settings. I played a 30 minute session of PUBG with default settings and it ran smoothly. I noticed that the phone gets hot to the touch during gameplay on high to extreme graphics settings. However, this did not affect the battery life of the phone. A 30-minute session drained only 5% of the battery. It’s really amazing.

Talking about Android 10 based One UI 2.0 software, it has very simple and easy to use interface. In fact, the Galaxy M31 has One UI Core instead of One UI and lacks some features like Bixby and Bixby Home. You can no longer download Samsung Pay from the Play Store. Even the stripped-down One UI core feels like One UI, so if you’re not too obsessed with Bixby or Samsung Pay, you should be happy with what this software has to offer.
