While the right edge of the device houses the volume rocker and power button, the left side houses the dual-SIM slot.

On the front, the M31 has a punch-hole camera at the top center of the screen with a 6.4-inch FullHD + AMOLED display and Gorilla Glass 3 for protection.
The smartphone offers a 32MP front camera and also supports 4K video recording and slow-mo selfies. The front camera was capable of taking good selfies in good light but lacked clarity in low light.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a bit heavy in the hand, so it gets tiring to hold after a while. The smartphone is available in Blue, Black and Red color options. Thanks to a glossy rear panel, the Galaxy M31 is a fingerprint and smudge magnet, which is quite noticeable on the black color variant we received for review. Also, the back panel attracts scratches if you keep it on a desk or in your pocket with some keys.
The volume and power buttons are placed high on the right side of the frame, which isn’t always easy to reach with one hand. Below the frame is a Type-C port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a single speaker grill. The left side of the frame houses the card slot, which can hold two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card.
Samsung makes attractive displays, so it’s understandable that the company didn’t feel the need to make changes here. The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display looks beautiful with bright, saturated colors and excellent viewing angles. The display also offers good brightness levels, so you won’t have any trouble reading the screen in bright sunlight. The FHD+ screen is sharp and delivers sharp video content in 1080p resolution. With Widevine L1 support, the Galaxy M31 can stream content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in Full HD resolution.
The biggest upgrade for the Galaxy M31 is the cameras. The smartphone has a 64MP quad camera setup on the back as opposed to the 48MP triple camera system on the Galaxy M30s. The new setup includes a high-resolution 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GW1 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro lens. The Galaxy M31’s main camera takes good photos in daylight. With Scene Optimizer enabled, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance colors, which you may prefer over more natural tones. So, for example, if you hold a flower, greens will appear green and pinks may appear red. Images are warmer, which means you can’t capture natural white tones. In general, I felt that images taken in daylight lacked contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera is capable of focusing on a subject quickly in daylight, but becomes a bit questionable when the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at 16MP and uses pixel binning to deliver bright and sharp images. You can manually change the aspect ratio to 3:4 64MP to capture high-resolution images. However, 64MP images will look dark, lack HDR support and should only be used in daylight if you want to capture wide landscapes to zoom in later.
Continuing from the main camera, the Samsung Galaxy M31’s 8MP wide-angle lens manages to take pleasing wide-angle photos in daylight. Colors look good and there’s plenty of detail until you zoom in and pixel peep. Portrait mode using Live Focus mode can yield some pleasing bokeh shots as long as the blur effect isn’t extreme. Skin tones look warm and soft, but there’s good detail to be found.
Finally, we have a 5MP macro camera that can get as close as 3cm to the subject. Again, best used in daylight, the macro camera lets you take some creative close-up shots. Macros can look clear and detailed as long as the subject is still. However, colors look muted and washed out compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
