Samsung hasn’t made a move when it comes to budget phones for a few years now and the company’s new Galaxy M Series is a serious push to set things up in 2019. Like the Galaxy M10 and M20 that were launched earlier this year, the Galaxy M30 aims to offer a good price at Rs 14,990. Something the Korean giant has not really tried in the past few years.

The competition when it comes to the budget level of Rs 15,000 is not too hot. We have smartphones from Xiaomi, Realme, Asus and even Honor competing for eyeballs, and the Samsung Galaxy M30 has earned the right to mix it up with what it packs.

Coming from the Galaxy M10 and M20, the Galaxy M30 slot above the Galaxy M20 and packed in a gorgeous Super AMOLED display instead of LCD, a large 5,000 mAh battery and three rear cameras that definitely pack a punch. It’s definitely a great phone, but not enough to beat the mighty Redmi Note 7 Pro?

I can comfortably, and confidently, say the Galaxy M30 has the best display (by some margin) on a phone under Rs 15,000. Samsung makes the best OLED panels for smartphones and it’s no surprise. The display on the Galaxy M30 is an absolute joy to watch.

The colors are bright, the saturation level is incredible and the display is bright enough to blind you for a few seconds if you suddenly take your phone out of your pocket in the dark. Like the Galaxy M10 and M20, Samsung packs a 6.4-inch Infinity-U display with thin bezels.

The 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy M30 is definitely the best we’ve seen on a budget device.

If you’re coming from an LCD panel and like watching videos, the Galaxy M30 is amazing. If you don’t like the way the colors come out on the display by default, Samsung also throws in a bunch of display modes to choose from in the display settings. I personally like the profile view ‘AMOLED picture’ but I have met at least some people who prefer to leave the view ‘adaptive’, so it is not my favorite.

Samsung also throws in a bunch of useful options like turning on the blue light filter and the option to change the font style and size if you want.

The only thing I like is the auto-brightness feature which often fails until I turn it off for a day.

The Galaxy M30 packs a 5,000 mAh battery unit and while that seems like a lot, we’ve seen phones like the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 pack a similar unit in the past. But the Galaxy M30’s AMOLED display and Exynos 7904 SoC do wonders, as far as battery life is concerned.

Like the Galaxy M10, M20, Samsung has added a USB-C port on the Galaxy M30 along with an 18 W charger in the box.

Even after hours of watching videos on mobile internet, I can save a bit of battery. Add hours of active music streaming

, two mail accounts running in the background, selfies and photos every time and about half an hour of voice calls, I still manage two full days before I have to go to the charger (M30 still 6 percent juice).

Samsung has packed a Type-C fast charger (about 18 W) in the box, but since it’s a big battery to fill, it took me two hours and 25 minutes on average to charge the phone. But again, I won’t complain about the excellent battery life.

A triple camera setup on a budget phone is unheard of but Samsung did just that with the Galaxy M30. It’s definitely something I’m eager to try since the last triple camera Samsung smartphone I tried out was the Galaxy A7.

Yes, I’m disappointed with what Samsung can do with such amazing hardware, but the camera on the Galaxy M30 certainly does a good job. However, against the Redmi Note 7 Pro (review), the performance is not short.

The phone has a 13 MP f/1.9 primary camera supported by a 5 MP f/2.2 depth sensor and a 5 MP f/2.2 ultrawide angle lens. Now, photos taken during the day look great with natural-looking sharpness and shadows. Samsung provides an easier way to turn on HDR but you can go into the settings and switch it to ‘Auto’ if you want.

Fast focus and wide-angle lenses are good options if you’re trying to take pictures. Images taken using a wide-angle lens can sometimes be horribly distorted, and Samsung even has a ‘shape corrector’ for you to correct the distortion. However, there are times when the image is too distorted to fix.

Portrait mode (Live Focus as Samsung calls it) works with good edge detection and natural-looking background separation from the subject. The blurred background looks quite natural and I like that you can change the background blur level even after taking the photo.

In low light, the camera will perform well if you have a light source illuminating the subject, but if you go into darker conditions, you will notice a lot of noise, as with most smartphones. So the resulting image is washed out with less detail. Adding a night mode here would be very useful.

As for the 16 MP f/2.0 front camera, I am satisfied with selfies, both during the day and in difficult lighting conditions. Of course, thumbs up here if you click a lot of selfies. The ‘Live Focus’ mode also works here and the custom sticker mode is worth a try.

For videos, the resolution is limited to 1080p 60fps but EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) works here and you will be happy to capture steady clips using the Galaxy M30.

The Galaxy M30 might not be a smartphone that will blow your mind, but Samsung has tried to make it look interesting in a unique way. Otherwise, it looks like a dull and oddly colored phone with a two-tone finish that may not be stunning but makes the phone stand out from the crowd.

The back of the phone has a two-tone color that differentiates the M30 from the Galaxy M10 and M20.

The frame and the back of the phone are completely made of plastic and although we know that Samsung wants to reduce the cost of materials, the Galaxy M30 could have been designed better. However, the phone feels solid. The rounded back also helps a lot in holding the phone, which is a problem with glass phones these days.

The back is glossy, which means you have to throw the case away if you don’t want to scratch it for a day or two.

Speaking of scratches, there are no camera scratches on the Galaxy M30, which means you don’t have to worry about the camera lens getting too scratched.

Now, the Galaxy M30 is not a small phone. It has a large 6.4-inch display and a mammoth 5,000 mAh battery, but Samsung has managed to keep the weight low. This is definitely helped by the use of plastic but it is still visible.

Something that sets Samsung’s new Galaxy A series apart from the M Series is the inclusion of OneUI. With the Galaxy M30, you’re still stuck with Android Oreo 8.1 with the company’s old Experience UI. I received a software update when I checked the phone that updated the Android Security patch with February 2019 but other than that, nothing I’ve ever seen on a Samsung phone.

Galaxy M Series Smartphones Now Available At Discounted Prices In India

The Galaxy M30 runs Samsung’s Experience UI v9.5 built on top of Android Oreo 8.1 with the February 2019 Android security patch.

That said, the software feels pretty good and I didn’t experience any major stuttering with normal use. You experience stuttering when using multi-window mode and when playing games. After using the Galaxy A30 for a while, OneUI feels faster to use, so it’s not a performance issue.

Switching to a third-party launcher might help you, but hopefully Samsung plans to bring OneUI to the M Series phones.
