Samsung’s flagship stores may get all the attention, but you won’t be the biggest smartphone maker on the planet considering those who don’t have the best parts to buy on the latest phone.

That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s amazing. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but it offers a fast enough experience without increasing the performance graphics inside. It’s an absolute steal at £310 and well worth considering if the S and Note series are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very, very confusing. What you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the range, just behind the A70. It will soon be the third when the A80 launches later this month. It outperforms the A10, A20e and A40, generally speaking.
In reality, this means a 6.4-inch device that looks like the Samsung Galaxy S10, but slimmed down on the inside. An octa-core 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor powers the phone, roughly equivalent to the Snapdragon 675 that confusingly powers the Galaxy A70. The phone also supports 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.
Effectively, the Samsung Galaxy A50 has three cameras on the back with a depth sensor and an ultra-wide lens attached to the main 25-megapixel lens. The A50 also features Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED screen, which is impressive when competitors in this price range often opt for cheaper IPS displays. Doubly so when it also includes an on-screen fingerprint reader.
So what’s the downside? Well, a very reasonable £310 wouldn’t you know. It’s actually a bit cheaper than Samsung’s other smartphone offerings, so its closest competitors come from other manufacturers.

First up is our favorite mid-range phone, the Google Pixel 3a. A scaled-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is built a bit slower, less efficient, and has some features for £399, but it already retails for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a slimmed-down version of the Huawei P30 series and retails for £329.
Alternatively, there is the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, a mid-range flagship model. It’s a device that costs just £329, despite having Qualcomm’s fastest mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380 but has recently become much cheaper.
It’s some pretty tough competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start with a look that owes a lot to the Galaxy S10. That means there’s really no bezel to speak of, although this version brings back the notch for the front camera. Here, though, it’s too much of a small notch on the top of the phone.
Like the S10, there’s a very small notch at the bottom of the phone, but it’s only noticeable because the rest of the sides have almost no bezels to speak of. The back is slightly curved and is plastic instead of glass, which makes it a bit more durable. It’s still the type of handset you’ll want to protect with a case of some sort.

The best thing about a handset at this price point is that the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, meaning it doesn’t appear on the handset itself. Just press your finger down on the screen and the phone will unlock – maybe a hair slower than a normal phone, but still a great feature for the price.
When it comes to other features, Samsung, as usual, does really well. Expandable storage? Check: microSD cards up to 512GB are supported. A headphone jack? Present and correct. Dual SIM cards? yes sir The two issues I can find are that it lacks waterproofing and it doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t get everything at this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for in its phones, it’s the quality of its displays. And that Super AMOLED screen doesn’t disappoint, this time you’re looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and in native screen color mode is able to display colors really accurately. The other modes – Photo, Cinema and Adaptive – are a bit more dynamic, but you’re not spoiled for choice.

As an AMOLED, contrast is perfect and brightness isn’t too bad either, peaking at 560cd/m2 in automatic mode (although it peaks at 350cd/m2 when you manually set the maximum brightness, possibly For battery reasons.)
In short, it’s as good a screen as you can expect for the price – well, actually, thanks to the on-screen fingerprint reader.
Before I answer this question, a quick summary. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In everyday use, it feels smooth, opens quickly and switches between apps easily. But how does it perform on benchmarks?
With one notable exception, it’s all too much. Samsung’s Galaxy A50 beats everything in its price bracket (including, interestingly, the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not by enough to lighten things up.

With this exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything in its price range. Not a huge surprise considering it uses the same chip as last year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US, but it’s pretty clear what you need to do if you want to get the most for your money.
It’s a similar story when it comes to graphical disappointments, though the Galaxy A50 fares a little worse here, lagging behind the Snapdragon-powered Pixel 3a and Nokia 8.1. The Pocophone F1 is, of course, an even clearer winner.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big ace, and that’s battery life. Our video wasn’t really long enough to include it all, so it started looping a second time, a full 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4,000mAh cell finally died. Only the Galaxy A70’s extra 500mAh beat it, where it lasted a full 25 hours and 22 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 features not one but three rear cameras. The main 25-megapixel f/1.7 camera is supported by an ultra-wide eight-megapixel and a five-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. It would have been nice if either of them had a telephoto zoom, but I’m probably asking for the moon given the generous specs on the stick that we got for the price.

It’s a pretty good match for the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple-camera array (48-megapixel, f/1.8 with eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s shots look great from a distance, when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the edge.
It goes without saying that the Galaxy A50 is bad. And given Huawei’s bright Android future, you might consider the slight loss of reliability worth paying.
In low-light indoor shots, the cameras are evenly matched, and both deliver images full of detail, accurate colors, and very little noise. Good job, both, although Huawei has a slight edge.
For video, the Galaxy A50 can shoot Full HD at 30 frames per second. If you want 4K or 60fps (you need both at the same time), you’ll need to pay an extra £60 for the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is excellent, and image stabilization seems strong enough for handhelds.

The front selfie camera also deserves some shout outs. It’s a 25-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture. That might be too much for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode turned off, Samsung still insists on removing all your wrinkles and giving you a weird, alien glow in the Samsung Camera app.
This may be seen as a plus for some, but abusers of Instagram’s smartphone beauty mode be warned: you’re not fooling anyone.
However, if that’s all you can say wrong with the Galaxy A50, Samsung is doing something right. Very true, indeed.
For £310 you get a pretty impressive smartphone that looks good, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and can take decent photos too. This is a phone that will be more than enough for most people.
