Update Laptop Stands For Macbook Pro Review – Rain Design, a maker of accessories for Apple products, released three anodized aluminum laptop stands earlier this year to go with Apple’s MacBook and MacBook Pro models: the mBar, mBar Pro and mBar Pro+. The mBar is a minimalist MacBook stand with fixed arms that is not portable, while the mBar Pro and Pro+ have folding arms for easy portability.
A laptop stand can be an essential addition to your home or office workstation, elevating your laptop to a more comfortable and ergonomic position for longer use. But a laptop stand is more of an option than a necessity, and size and weight are deciding factors in whether it’s worth adding to your bag.

I received the mBar Pro for review and tested it with a 15-inch MacBook Pro. I’ve personally owned several stands from Rain Design, including the iLap, mStand, and iLevel (which is a permanent fixture on my treadmill desk at home).

The three mBar models are made of anodized aluminum and are available in silver or space gray. All have rubber strips at all contact points to protect your laptop, as well as rubber feet for stability.
The mBar Pro folds into a rectangle with two ends protruding from one side. It measures 9.6 inches (243 mm) wide, 3.6 inches (91 mm) high and 1/2 inch (12.4 mm) thick when folded. The nubs are on the extendable legs and prevent the laptop from sliding. It folds well, although it takes a bit of trial and error to figure out which leg turns which way to install it.
With the legs extended, it measures 9.6 inches front to back and raises the back of a MacBook Pro by 3 inches. It feels solid yet light, weighing 4.6 ounces (130 grams). I found that my MacBook Pro felt stable and didn’t wobble at all.
Overall, the mBar Pro feels solid and well-designed. It’s certainly an attractive addition to Apple’s laptop lineup.

It’s compact when folded and light enough not to add extra weight to your laptop bag. The mBar comes with a lightweight microfiber cover with quick release. Although the stand has no sharp edges, I feel like it might scratch my laptop if I put it in the laptop bag I use the most. If you’re using the included sleeve or a protective laptop sleeve, this won’t be a problem of course.
I used the mBar while working at the coffee shop tables and sitting at the kitchen counters. General ergonomic principles for laptop use dictate that you keep your wrists in as neutral a position as possible. Depending on your height or the position of your chair, table or counter, the mBar may or may not help with this. When I sit at a counter, I tend to rest my wrists on the laptop under the keyboard and focus on staying neutral while using the mBar Pro.
When I’m sitting on a desk, the mBar Pro raises the MacBook Pro to a level that allows me to keep my neck in a more neutral position. If you’ve heard of “text neck,” which is neck strain caused by looking at a phone (or your favorite electronic device), the mBar Pro can definitely help prevent it, at least while using your laptop. As an avid iPhone user, I definitely want to avoid neck strain as much as possible, and I’m all for a product that helps me do that.
The height of the mBar Pro isn’t adjustable, so if that’s a feature you need, you’ll have to look elsewhere (or use magazines, books, or other random items to add height).

An added benefit of the mBar Pro’s minimalist design allows for excellent airflow around the laptop. If you’re working with a heavy processor, it can help keep your MacBook Pro a little cooler because the heat can be dissipated faster.
The mBar Pro is a lightweight, attractive and functional portable laptop that aesthetically matches Apple’s MacBook line. It can help relieve neck tension even without height adjustment, its ability to help will vary depending on the furniture you use and your habits.
However, it’s not cheap at less than $55. At this price, I can’t recommend it as a must-buy, but if you’ve got the money and need a light and easy solution to prop up your MacBook Pro, this is one of the nicest portable stands I’ve seen.

A matching space gray and Apple silver, the laptop stand has a rotating base that makes a pleasant clicking sound as it adjusts to the required angle without having to lift the stand. An adjustable bracket on the front of the stand can also be adjusted to hold a laptop, which helps hold laptops up to 16 inches.
The holes in the stand do a great job of dissipating heat, as the aluminum chassis is a bit heavy when it comes to laptops, weighing around 1.45 kilograms or 3 pounds. The weight can make the stand a bit difficult to adjust and makes it more of a permanent fixture of a home setup than a lightweight travel stand.

However, this weight and difficulty is what makes the stand good at what it’s supposed to do: hold the laptop in place. The pressure of the laptop doesn’t change the support much, even after typing furiously for a week.
Lululook touts this as a selling point, and while the stand is stubborn to move, it can reach a good height and maintain a good angle to hold the MacBook without it falling over.
The stand is also fully collapsible if you need to minimize space. 360-degree rotation is more useful in environments where you need to show your work to others, such as an office or classroom.
In a stand-alone configuration, the pivot avoids lifting the stand to make adjustments to the table.

The silicone coating on the top of the stand helps keep your laptop in place without scratching the aluminum.
Some of the cheapest laptops you can get are around $20, but the almost solid aluminum of the Lululook’s stand offers great durability. This makes it an investment in setting up your desk to withstand generations of MacBooks and iPads.
The stand is good on its own and in combination with more complicated workstation setups, and well worth the price if you’re willing to invest the time.
