Part of the process of writing a review for a product as big as the Apple iPhone 14 is comparing it to its predecessor. Is it better than before? Is it expensive? And, most importantly, is it worth the upgrade?
Usually, with iPhone updates, it’s a fairly orderly process. Apple usually makes a major redesign or major technology boost by changing the display, upgrading the camera, or adding new features. In recent years, it has increased this level and also made similar processor changes in the range.
However, this year is different. While the iPhone 14 Pro gets several new features, including a small but significant update to the physical design, Apple has kept the standard iPhone 14 relatively stable.
The iPhone 14 is the first iPhone to not get a chipset upgrade or design overhaul since Steve Jobs launched the first model in 2007. The physical design remains the same as the iPhone 13, the display still only refreshes at 60Hz, and there’s no sign of the iPhone 14 Pro’s innovative Dynamic Island or always-on features.

What’s different this year? Well, as usual there are some new colors: a light purple, a new blue and a bright red to choose from. It’s good but not an update that will set the world on fire.
IPhone 14 also has an additional ambient light sensor that provides more responsive and accurate adaptive brightness. There’s also an updated, dual-core accelerometer, which helps the iPhone 14 deliver Apple’s new crash detection feature and satellite connectivity. However, it’s the latter that us Brits are going to miss out on as the feature only works in the US and Canada at the time of writing.
The only major change is in the iPhone 14 camera system. Here, the main camera inherits the 12MP (f/1.5) camera from 2021’s iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max series phones, while the front-facing selfie TrueDepth camera gets a brighter aperture and autofocus.
Apple isn’t asking big bucks for this mild update, at least this year. Yes, the price has gone up from £779 to £849 for the 128GB model, but that’s not entirely surprising given the current economic climate, and is £200 less than the equivalent iPhone 14 Pro (£1,099). The 256GB model will set you back £959 and the 512GB version costs £1,179.

If you’re happy to go straight for an Android handset, there are plenty of alternative options for your £849. At the top of the list is the Google Pixel 6 Pro (£749). It has a much larger 6.7in AMOLED screen that refreshes at a smoother 120Hz, the same camera count and type, including the main camera and ultrawide module, and currently costs less than £700.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus (£769) is another good option at a similar price to the iPhone 14 (£840-ish). It has a larger 6.6in 120Hz display, but it’s better than the Pixel in terms of cameras, adding a 3x telephoto camera to the main and ultrawide units.
Then we have the OnePlus 10 Pro (£699), another flagship phone with three rear cameras (main, ultrawide and 3.3x telephoto) and a large 6.7in 120Hz AMOLED screen. At the time of writing it retails for a very attractive £699, while its cheaper sibling, the OnePlus 10T, costs an even lower £629.

It has a flat front and back, wrapped around a matte-finish aluminum frame. The back panel is framed by glossy glass, with a raised, square camera bump in the top-left corner, in which the phone’s two camera lenses are positioned diagonally opposite each other. The front has a tough, scratch-resistant ceramic shield glass, and like last year, the phone is rated IP68 for water and dust-resistance. That means it can submerge in 6 meters of water for up to 30 minutes at a time.
The only difference is the camera housing compared to the iPhone 13. It’s been lifted somewhat from the phone’s body, a change largely driven by an upgrade to the main camera.
Otherwise everything is same as last year. In fact, this is the third year in a row that Apple has kept the basic physical design the same, with only the camera bump changing the overall look.

Apple also spared no time in upgrading the display this time around. Still, it’s good: it’s a 6.1-inch OLED display with a Retina-class resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 and a maximum brightness of 800 nits in everyday use and 1,200 nits in HDR playback. I recorded a peak brightness of 827cd/m2 and 1,194cd/m2 in daily use.
However, with the Pro model topping out at 2,000 nits in everyday use and 1,600 nits in HDR playback, it’s disappointing that the iPhone 14 doesn’t get a small upgrade here.
The most disappointing thing about the iPhone 14’s display is that it’s stuck at a constant 60Hz, which makes the phone feel sluggish, unresponsive and, frankly, old-fashioned. With most smartphones above £200 now coming with at least 90Hz refresh screens, it looks like Apple should have done some updating at this point.

It’s the only upgrade to any Note this year in the form of a camera array, and on paper it looks like a worthwhile boost. On the front, the iPhone 14 gets a new TrueDepth selfie camera with a brighter aperture and autofocus. The main camera, meanwhile, bears little resemblance to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro, moving to a larger sensor with a slightly brighter f/1.5 aperture (up from f/1.6) and sensor-shift stabilization.
There are also improvements in image processing, with a new “photonic engine” that improves image quality across all three cameras, including the ultrawide camera, but it uses the same 12MP f/2.4 hardware as last year.
Apple says image quality is greatly improved, especially in low light. How did it perform in real-world use? Well, I compared the iPhone 14 to the iPhone 13 Pro in back-to-back shots and found that, in most cases, it was impossible to tell the difference. That doesn’t mean it’s bad. It is a very capable camera in good light and low light.
Only in certain cases does a photonic engine demonstrate an advantage. For example, in the first shot below, there is very little difference between the two photos, but in the second low-light shot you can see that the grass in the foreground is much brighter, greener, and clearer on the iPhone 14 image.

There are upgrades to the phone’s video capabilities, but these are more significant. There’s a new “Action Mode” for video capture, which applies action camera-style stabilization to video (2.8K at 60fps), and it works beautifully. A GoPro can still capture smooth video at high resolutions and is well suited for use in extreme environments, but for occasional use, it works great.
The iPhone 14 can capture up to 4K in Cinematic mode — a gimmicky mode that applies a fake background blur to the phone’s video, much like Portrait mode for photos. iPhone 13 and 13 Pro are limited to 1080p. And, finally, it also has more intuitive video zoom, which is actually a more useful upgrade.
As mentioned at the top of this review, the iPhone 14 is powered by the same chipset as last year’s iPhone 13 – the A15 Bionic – which means general performance hasn’t changed at all.
