The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest, heaviest and most expensive version of Apple’s smartphone for 2020, and it’s a beast in every way.

The top-of-the-range iPhone is priced from £1,099 and is topped by the 12 Pro (£999), 12 (£799) and 12 mini (£699).
Iphone 12 Pro Max Review: Simply The Best
The new design of the 12 Pro Max is similar to the rest of the iPhone 12 range: square-sided, all-screen with minimal bezels and a frosted glass back. There’s the same “ceramic shield” technology behind the screen and a new MagSafe magnetic attachment system for wireless chargers and accessories, but that’s where the physical features end.

The large OLED display measures 6.7in diagonally, dwarfing all iPhones and competing with larger Android phones like the 6.78in OnePlus 8 or the 6.9in Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
The surface is amazing. It’s glossy, creamy and like a tablet in that large size. HDR video is great for viewing, and a set of stereo speakers is great.
Iphone 12 Pro Review: Still A Top Choice With Great Specs
It can be held with two hands just like its mobile phone rival. It’s much wider and weighs 226g – 18g heavier than the Note 20 Ultra, 39g heavier than the smaller 12 Pro, and still 64g heavier than the regular iPhone 12.
Thanks to the hard edges I found the 12 Pro Max much easier than the rounded and heavy front of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I can use it one-handed and do some finger sports and I didn’t experience wrist pain when trying to hold the bar-of-soap-like 11 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the same A14 Bionic processor as the 12, 12 Pro and iPad Air, along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of initial storage – double the iPhone 12’s 64GB. Performance is always the same: fast, smooth and quick to process photos, videos, or play games. Speeds on 5G are similar, and the iPhone 12 Pro is better hosted with less impact on battery life.
Iphone 14 Pro Review: Effortlessly Superb
Battery life ranges from more than 48 hours between charges (eight hours longer than the iPhone 12) and more than seven hours on screen. The phone will be using 5G for 5 hours from 7 am on the first day to 7 am on the third day, the rest is spent on Wi-Fi.
It takes 30 minutes to charge the battery to 50%, 73 minutes to 90% but a full charge takes two hours and 13 minutes using the cable and £19 Apple 20W USB-C power adapter, over three hours via MagSafe wireless charger.
Apple doesn’t offer a longevity guarantee for the iPhone 12 Pro Max battery – most smartphone batteries last at least 500 cycles and hold 80% capacity – but it can be replaced for £69. The out-of-warranty service costs £566.44, which includes the screen. The iPhone 12 Pro Max was awarded six out of 10 for repairability by iFixit experts.
The 12 Pro Max uses 100% recycled tin in its main frame, 99% recycled tungsten, 98% recycled rare earth elements and at least 35% recycled plastic in many other components. Apple is also using renewable energy for the final assembly of the machine, breaking down the phone’s environmental impact in its report.

It also offers free trade-in and recycling programs, including non-Apple products. The 12 Pro Max doesn’t ship with headphones or a power adapter, reducing its carbon footprint.

The 12 Pro comes with iOS 14.2 version like the 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and all other iPhones from 2015 or newer. This includes home screen video customization with widgets and app library folders, enhanced privacy tools and a new translation app. See iOS 14 preview and iPhone 12 review for more.
You can expect more than five years of software support, including security fixes and iOS version updates, which is longer than other smartphone manufacturers.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the same selfie camera and ultrawide camera as the 12 and 12 Pro, which work well, but the main camera and rear phone are different.
The phone’s camera has a 2.5x optical zoom, longer than 2x. The increased zoom is good, but pales in comparison to competitors’ 4x/5x optical zoom. Focusing is slower than on the 12 Pro, and worse in low light. But both smartphones switch to bright light main camera in low light.
The main camera’s 12-megapixel resolution remains the same but the physical sensor is 47% larger, collecting 87% more light than before.

In good light it captures images that are indistinguishable from the 12 Pro: very detailed and accurate in color and handling high-contrast conditions.
When light levels start to drop in the evening, the larger sensor captures brighter, more detailed and less noisy images than other iPhones. The same goes for indoor photography on winter days. The dedicated night mode takes less time and when enabled it takes photos faster than the 12 Pro.
For photographers you get a brighter image. For enthusiasts, the larger sensor will provide more detail when shooting in RAW formats, including Apple’s new ProRAW format coming soon with a software update.

The 12 Pro Max has the same lidar (light detection and ranging) scanner on the back for night mode photos and autofocus. The 12 Pro Max can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second, as well as Dolby Vision HDR.
Overall, the 12 Pro Max is the best camera for the iPhone and has better low-light performance than other iPhone 12 models. It also puts Apple ahead of its competitors. At the top, though, the 2.5x optical zoom is still behind the best in the industry.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max costs £1,099 for 128GB, £1,199 for 256GB or £1,399 for 512GB of storage.
In comparison, the 12 Pro costs from £999, the 12 costs £799, the 12 Mini costs £699 and the iPhone SE costs £399. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs £1,179 and the OnePlus 8 Pro costs £799.
Review Of Apple’s Iphone 14 And Iphone 14 Pro: They’re Leaning Into It
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is Apple’s biggest smartphone this year, but it’s expensive — both financially and physically.
It sits next to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and OnePlus 8 Pro in a large phone case, which is so large that you’ll struggle to fit it into a small pocket close to both hands.
You get a bigger 6.7-inch screen, 48-hour battery life, a better camera and better design and ergonomics. Granted it’s not the most accurate and expensive, although it’s only £100 more than the cheapest iPhone 12 Pro, but it’s a great phone for the money.
If you can handle the size and price, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is one of the best phones out there.
Apple’s Iphone 14 Pro Max Needs A Lot More Than A Bigger Screen To Stand Out
Pros: Long battery, high performance, good low light camera, long optical zoom, portrait and night mode, water resistance, wireless charging, MagSafe, Face ID, amazing screen, 5G, extended computer support. Cons: No USB-C, and your own charger, big, heavy, and expensive.

Apple’s slicker iPhone 12 looks a bit better than the iPhone 4, with stainless steel and the addition of a third camera on the back – and costs an extra £200.
