Apple Iphone 14 Pro Max Review: Refined To Near Perfection
The iPhone 14 is still a good buy if you’re looking for a great flagship with a pocket-friendly design. It has an improved camera system that delivers better low-light performance and a faster and brighter TrueDepth camera with autofocus. On the video front, there’s a new Action mode for super-steady footage.
Add in some useful safety features like collision detection and satellite emergency SOS, and you have a strong contender. But should you buy the iPhone 14 or wait for the bigger iPhone 14 Plus? Or should you spend money on the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max?

Availability of the standard iPhone 14 is currently good, with the only expected delay between ordering and shipping. Despite the high demand for the Pro model, Apple is now trying to produce more Pro models by discontinuing production of the regular iPhone 14.

The design of the iPhone 14 is not what I would call new. It’s basically an iPhone 13 clone, complete with a notch.

Don’t get me wrong, the aluminum and glass body is solid and quite attractive – and you also get a hard ceramic front (removable) and a tempered glass back with IP68 water resistance. But you’ll probably be jealous when you see the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island, which replaces the notch with smaller, interactive cutouts for live alerts and activities.

The main camera on the iPhone 14 doesn’t increase to 48MP compared to the iPhone 14 Pro series, but it’s an advanced camera in its own right. The 12MP wide main camera has a larger sensor than the iPhone 13, with 1.9 micrometer pixels and a faster f/1.7 aperture. As a result, you should expect better action shots and low-light performance.
The iPhone 14 also has an ultra-wide camera that is rated to capture 4x more scenes and deliver 2x better low-light performance. And the TrueDepth camera offers autofocus with a fast f/1.9 aperture for the first time. In this first comparison photo with the Galaxy S22 with diplomatic flowers, the iPhone 14 shows just how much better its camera can be. On iPhone, you can not only see more detail in the petals, but also more water droplets.

The iPhone 14 also has the edge over the Pixel 6 in this Halloween decoration shot. Colors are more pronounced on the iPhone when you’re looking at sunflowers and gnomes, although the Pixel does a better job of bringing out the ornaments in a dark background.
Switching to the ultra-wide-angle camera, when you look at a tree underwater, the iPhone 14 outperforms the Pixel 6 with a slightly brighter image with more contrast. And it’s suitable for most scenes, although both images are excellent.
With Night Mode enabled, the iPhone 14 captures this fire pit area brighter than the Pixel 6, even if the iPhone’s image looks a bit brighter. However, I like the sharpness of the paving stones in the Google shot and the brightness of the light.
The iPhone 14 falls far short of the Galaxy S22 in this Night Mode photo of indoor Star Wars figurines in near-darkness. Colors are more realistic in Samsung’s images and Star Wars text is easier to read.
Iphone 14 Review: Is The Iphone 14 Worth Buying In 2023?
The iPhone 14’s front camera worked well in this selfie, producing a great shot with lots of detail on my face and hair. And the surrounding plants also look more alive. However, I like that the Pixel 6 gives you more space for group selfies.
One strange thing is that the iPhone 14 only maxes out at 5x digital zoom, which is worse than the 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom of the Galaxy S22. In this 5x magnified photo of the Chrysler Building, the iPhone 14 produces a brighter image with more detail in the building and colors that are closer to what I saw in person. But the Galaxy S22’s photo shows a blue sky.
However, as you can see here, the Galaxy S22 was able to get ahead with the Space Zoom feature. You can see the top three sections of the building up close.
The iPhone 14’s big video upgrade is Action Mode, designed to deliver smooth and steady video while you’re on the go. To enable the feature, you just need to toggle a button in the Camera app, and overall, it works pretty well.

While walking around in my yard, the footage from the iPhone 14 looks a bit smoother than the footage shot by the Galaxy S22; iPhone clips are also lifelike when viewed on an HDR display.
