We are testing the 50-inch display model 50U5050 with 4K, Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos all at a competitive price of INR 33,999. These VIDAA OS-powered 4K HDR TVs are also available in 55-inch (55U5050) and 65-inch (65U5050) sizes. The Toshiba 50U5050 has similarly narrow bezels on the front. It is light in weight and quite slim, and the IR sensor protruding from the bottom is in the center. Behind the IR sensor is a multi-function hard button for when you just can’t find the remote.
The included stand looks premium and holds the TV firmly in place, meaning there’s no shifting around when you place the TV on the table. The TV comes with a wall mount and Toshiba also offers free installation.
There’s the usual set of connectivity options on the back, and they’re thankfully well-placed and easily accessible when the TV is on its stand. However, the ports are towards the center rather than the sides, making them difficult to access once the TV is wall-mounted.
All three HDMI 2.0 ports have HDCP 2.2 for 4K@60Hz, and HDMI 1 has ARC. To enable 4K streaming from a 4K supported device, you must switch to Enhanced HDMI mode in System Settings. HDMI CEC worked flawlessly.

Users who watch DTH content will appreciate that the Toshiba remote control is fully loaded with a full set of buttons and options. The buttons are soft and we didn’t find much of a problem with their placement on the remote. It’s quite comfortable to hold and has hotkeys for Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video.
Instead of Android TV, Toshiba uses VIDAA OS, which lacks many popular apps, including Disney+Hotstar and Discovery+. The Toshiba 50U5050 also lacks Chromecast built-in for direct streaming, but users can mirror their phone’s screen via Miracast. The TV also integrates the Alexa home assistant, which should make it more convenient for people investing in Amazon’s smart home ecosystem.
Supported apps include Prime Videos, Netflix, YouTube, Zee5, Yupp YV and Hungama Play. Toshiba also includes its own content library, but it doesn’t have much to go on. Toshiba promises to add more applications in the first half of next year.

The good thing is that the software is lightweight, mature and easy to navigate. Even when testing the TV, we encountered very little stuttering, which is unusual for a TV in this price segment.
The UI is intuitive and people who are not tech savvy will be able to find what they are looking for with reasonable ease.
However, to fill the gap for a proper smart TV experience, you need to invest in an external streaming device like FireTV Stick 4K or Mi Box 4k.
This 50 inch 4K LED TV screen supports all types of HDR formats including Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and HLG. But you need to balance your expectations when it comes to HDR on affordable and mid-range TVs.

Viewing angles are quite wide and the panel is not very reflective. The sounds are pleasant and the dynamic range is wide. Advanced users can use the options to further refine the various picture modes to their liking.
The difference between the TV’s SDR and Dolby HDR content is noticeable, which is also not very common in this price segment, where the brightness of the top panel is below HDR standards and there is no local contrast enhancement. is not a solution.
The HD and Full HD scales are very good, but they don’t live up to what we saw with the Realme SLED TV.

Sound quality from the Toshiba 50U5050’s 30W speakers is loud and clear, and regular users will be able to manage without a soundbar or external sound system. The speakers have Dolby Atmos support, but content in native apps and when streaming from the Fire TV didn’t detect Atmos and only displayed 5.1 audio.
Overall, consuming content on this Toshiba TV was a pleasant experience. We mostly streamed 4K Dolby Vision HDR content from our Fire TV Stick. The TV can reproduce detail in dark scenes and add brightness to bright scenes without feeling burnt out by the light. We preferred Dolby Vision Bright for most content, but sometimes Dolby Vision Dark felt nicer. When viewing SDR content, we often prefer dynamic mode.
Overall, the Toshiba 50U5050 is easy to recommend for its affordable price. And that’s because the basics are well covered. HDR and SDR picture quality is very good, sound output from the TV speakers is excellent, and all the expected connectivity options are available.
The only downside is that app support is very limited, and unlike most Android TVs in this price range, this one doesn’t support Chromecast built-in. These shortcomings can be remedied if you’re willing to spend a little more on a decent streaming device.
