Update Green Top Next Review – Some watches need no further introduction and have gained cult status over the years. The Submariner once defined these watches… Undoubtedly one of the 5 most iconic models ever created by the Swiss watch industry, this Rolex dive watch is no longer It is a stopwatch. Its popularity extends far beyond the small club of watch enthusiasts – which explains why it’s sometimes overlooked by the most dedicated of watch enthusiasts. Released as part of the 2020 collection update, the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV is a watch we’ve already seen on MONOCHROME. But our chance to own a long-loan example gave us the opportunity to really explore all the details of this watchmaking monument.

Preliminary Note: Before we get into the details (I know, this is easy…), allow me to comment. I know that with current pricing and availability, everything from Rolex has become a hot topic. Even more so with this watch, which is one of the most popular and hard to come by in the brand’s portfolio. We are fully aware of the situation, and if we are somehow to blame for it, we cannot ignore it. However, for the sake of this review, I ask you to put these things aside and just treat the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV as a watch, as a finished product, as I do. It can be looked at very objectively. look at that.

This is not the place to recount the entire history of the Rolex Submariner. If you’re interested, we’ve detailed the Submariner’s 4-part history – Part 1 Early References, Part 2 55xx Series, Part 3 5-Digit Evolution, Part 4 Modern Ceramic Models.

More importantly the previous generation, the first 6-bit series. Originally launched in 2008 in 116618LN and 116618LB in gold, and 116619LB in white gold, steel Submariner Date versions (116610LN and 116610LV) followed in 2010. The evolution from the 5-digit series to these new 6-digit versions is quite striking, not only because of the new shapes and proportions (Maxi-Dial and Super-Case), but also because of the use of new materials such as Cerachrom bezels. The 6 figure collection is a step towards a modern and more luxurious feel. It also satisfies a need for a bigger watch, but not really any bigger than before. It’s all about shape and proportions, effectively enlarging the watch and making it “fattier” than it was before.

In addition to the classic black-on-black steel model (which is unavoidable on this watch), Rolex also released the green-on-green Submariner Date, the so-called “Hulk” reference 116610LV – its predecessor . The watch we are reviewing today. The 11661x series is an undeniably excellent watch with a lot of parameters and impressive quality, but after 10 years of service life, it has also aged a bit. For the most part, Super-Case feels a bit dated and not to everyone’s taste. There was always a certain elegance and slenderness about this dive watch from the Submariner that has gotten a bit lost. The 2020 evolution, which encompasses the entire Submariner range (dated and undated, steel or precious metal), has somehow rectified the situation, retaining all the great characteristics of the previous generation. This evolution is somewhat comparable to the Porsche 911.

As we explained in our previous article on the new generation of the Rolex Submariner, the 2020 evolution is not a revolution. The fundamentals remain the same, and in addition to the new mechanics, updates involve subtle changes. However, there is nothing shared between the 11661x generation and the current 12661x models. A typical Rolex watch looks identical from a distance, but the trained eye is quick to spot the difference between what the Submariner used to be and what it is now. The subtle evolution (actually, it might be better called an upgrade) is the key to this model’s success.

This is probably where most changes will be noticed. While the case looks nearly identical to the previous generation at first glance, the new Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV (and all models in the 2020 update) have changed dramatically. At first, Rolex claimed that the diameter was 41 mm, which was 1 mm higher than the previous generation. This actually seems like a very simple way of looking at things. Of course, the Submariner has grown in size, but at the same time it has a new shape, getting rid of the so-called super case.

According to our own measurements, the Submariner Date 126610LV has not changed much in size. The reality is: 40.5mm in diameter (not 41mm), compared to 40.2mm in the previous generation. Thickness remains at the same level at 12 mm. The dimensions are also the same, edge to edge, at 47.6mm, which is fairly compact for a watch of this size, allowing the Submariner to fit most wrists. But after reading this article, you might be wondering what’s new here.

The main evolution concerns the width of handles and bracelets. The way the bumps flow from the sides of the case (3 and 9 o’clock) to the tips of the bumps looks completely different. The so-called super case of the previous generation gave the watch a boxy, bulky feel, without the Submariner’s usual slenderness. Now, mainly thanks to the wider strap width (21mm, up from 20mm now), the lugs are slimmer, and they do feel slimmer when you look at the watch. Rolex gave the Submariner its original look by shaving 0.5mm off the inner surface. More flow, more curves, less volume. If the size is slightly larger on paper, the result is reversed on the wrist, with the current Rolex Submariner Date looking a little smaller than before due to the larger bracelet and thinner strap. Small tweaks can make a big difference.

The rest of the case, or at least its execution and specs, hasn’t changed much. The Submariner remains true to its spirit: a powerful dive watch that is also a very luxurious sports watch. The case is crafted from Oystersteel (the internal name for the 904L stainless steel alloy the brand uses), combining a straight brushed finish on the flat areas and polished details on the sides. As with all modern models, the handle sides no longer have polished chamfers (unfortunately). The crown, known as the triple lock, is screwed on and is well protected by side guards. The case back is made from a single piece of solid corrugated steel, which is typical of Rolex production. Both are guaranteed water resistant to 300m or 1000ft, more than enough for recreational and professional divers alike (if you want more, the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea have you covered).

The top of the case is protected by a flat sapphire crystal, with the iconic “Cyclops” magnifying glass above the date. New to the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV, however, is the addition of an anti-reflective coating on the inside of the crystal (remember, Rolex has only started using AR coatings in the last few years). Readability is impressive in most cases due to the flat profile of the crystal and the AR coating.

The dial features a classic unidirectional dive bezel with 60 clicks. The bezel is a real pleasure to operate, with a reassuring sense of sharpness and quality, this is a truly well-made object. Plus, once placed, the frame stays securely in place. On top is the Cerachrom insert (the internal name for the ceramic), engraved with a 60-minute scale (not fully graduated, also reserved for the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea), then PVD Platinum plated. Insert luminous beads at the zero mark and polish the insert. The LN model is available in black, and the green LV version you see here certainly adds a touch of originality and fun, but in the real world, the color is subtle and understated. Not the flashy green you see on the brand’s website, but a restrained green that makes this watch usable in everyday life. One small (and negligible) disadvantage of the green frame is that it offers slightly less contrast in certain lighting conditions than the black model.

As for the dial, there won’t be many differences between the Rolex Submariner Date 126610LV and its predecessor. Except for one major update: the green Submariner uses only green for its bezel and the dial is now black, while the 116610LV Hulk has a brushed green dial with sunrays. The dial is now the same as the LN model, with a glossy black lacquered background. Some may regret this style change, I personally prefer this “Starbucks” or “Cermit” version
