Update Good Gaming Pc 2020 Review

Update Good Gaming Pc 2020 Review – If you’ve been following the PC industry for a while, you know that gaming PCs have only become more popular. Also, if you’re familiar with gaming PCs, you’ve probably heard of Origin, a pre-built boutique system specializing in gaming PCs. We’ve reviewed some of their systems in the past and today we’re back to take a look at the latest version of the Neuron gaming desktop.

The Origin Neuron arrived Indiana Jones style in a very strong wooden shipping box. Make sure you have a drill or screwdriver handy to get in. When you spend that much on a system, you want to make sure it arrives in one piece.

The interior of the case comes with an expandable foam insert that expands in place to provide a custom fit. It’s another nice touch to minimize damage to your GPU or PCIe slots if shipping gets a little rough. In addition to the system, you also get a box with some accessories and a t-shirt. The box came with some user manuals for the internals, a USB drive with some recovery stuff in case your system gets damaged, and a Wi-Fi antenna for the motherboard.

Look inside. Our test system was configured with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, an RTX 3070, 16GB of 3200MHz RAM, an Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero and a Samsung 980 Pro SSD.

In this review, we won’t pay much attention to the specifications of our specific system as each build configuration may be different. Instead, we will examine the user experience and value of such a system.

The Origin Neuron is a mid-tower offering, but if you’re looking for something a little smaller, they offer the Chronos family as a small form factor line. Moving up, they have the Millennium full tower line and the Genesis super tower line.

Because everyone knows that the more RGB your system has, the more frames you’ll get, this system comes with RGB RAM, an RGB CPU cooler, RGB fans, and an RGB strip on the front of the case.

Looking at the entire system from this point of view, cable management is as good as it gets. Origin decided to tie the CPU pipes together to prevent them from rotating. I noticed that they went so far as to turn the ends of the straps so that they are not visible to the user. I appreciate little details like this that show a source really knows what they are doing.

One thing I didn’t like was the ugly 8 pin to 12 pin GPU power adapter. The heatsink, braid and plastic connection really take away from the visual appeal. It really doesn’t affect performance, but if you’re looking for a system like this, you obviously also care about how your system looks. I would really appreciate a custom 12 pin cable that doesn’t need a connector in the middle and is long enough to hide all the connections in the back compartment. There isn’t much on the market, but I’m sure Origin should be able to work something out.

Moving to the rear, the cable management is impeccable here as well. Although Origin took the time to hide the zippers here too, I almost prefer velcro. With zippers that are inches apart, you’ll have a hard time upgrading or troubleshooting a component without tearing everything apart.

It’s good that it will be difficult to adapt later. You can definitely tell someone did their homework and carefully planned all the wiring with a layout like this.

At the top we find more zippers under the removable magnetic dust filter. The exact configuration of the front panel and fan configuration depends on which case option you choose. Our review unit was built in a Corsair 220T case, but the system is also available in the Corsair 110Q, 175R and 4000D.

Not much going on in the back. The back panel in this particular case uses the sliding slot and traditional thumb screws. I’m not a big fan because you have to press down on all four corners of the panel at the same time you slide it in or the slots won’t catch. Even with the optimal cable routing that Origin has done, there are so many cables that it’s very tight in the back. However, this is not a big problem since you rarely need to go back there. Although the Crosshair VIII Hero motherboard costs around $400, it’s really nice to have plenty of USB ports and the second 2.5G LAN port.

Game performance is as expected. Since each component configuration provides different performance, it does not make sense to run a full system performance analysis. For more performance specs, check out our GeForce RTX 3070 and Ryzen 7 5800X reviews.

What you probably want to know in short is that the Zen 3-based 5800X has better single-threaded performance than previous Ryzen generations, which shows in gaming scenarios. The RTX 3070, based on Nvidia’s latest amp architecture, is currently very hard to come by, but overall an excellent value and a huge performance improvement over the first generation RTX. The RTX 3070 is roughly equal in gaming performance to the previous flagship, the RTX 2080 Ti which was more than twice the price.

The system will boot in about 15 seconds and we will also have a close review of Samsung’s 980 Pro series SSD. In general, such a system will be suitable for 1080p and 1440p gaming as well as light to medium production work.

As for the overall user experience, Origin’s website does a good job of helping you choose components and ensure compatibility. However, for someone new to PC building, especially someone in the market for a pre-build, it can be a bit overwhelming. By default, their store starts you off with the cheapest version of a system and you can choose to upgrade components along the way. It may not be clear what you’re getting for spending an extra $20 on an SSD, how much cooling a particular processor needs, or what the benefits of upgrading your motherboard are. A description with some basic benchmarks can be useful to help people decide which parts to go to.

One advantage of using a custom system builder like Origin is that they use all brand parts. Other vendors such as Dell and HP may use OEM motherboards and other non-branded components. While this may be slightly cheaper, it means you’ll have almost no community support and a more limited way to upgrade or resell. Origin uses off the shelf parts so if there is a problem chances are someone else has had the same problem and there is a solution online.

In terms of system usability, the Windows 10 installation that came with the system was thankfully free of most of the vendor-specific bloatware common to many systems. There are some pre-installed software, but I would say they are important and are software I would install anyway. Things like Corsair iCUE to control the RGB LEDs, CPU-Z to monitor system performance and TeamViewer to let Origin technicians troubleshoot your system.

We didn’t like the fan speed profile than it appeared by default. The fans were loud and annoying. We tried to open the Asus motherboard control software to adjust this, but found that it was not installed correctly or was corrupted. We decided to try Origin’s included recovery USB to see if it would work on a fresh install, but still no luck. We were able to reinstall the program manually, but when you spend that kind of money on a system, you expect things to work right away. We also expected Origin to set the fans to be silent when idle and only turn on when the system is under load. Hopefully this was just an isolated incident with my review unit.

Some additional documentation on how each fan was connected would also be useful. Since the cables were so tightly managed and mostly hidden from view, it was basically impossible to figure out where the fan connectors went. Although I tried different profiles and fan settings, I could never get the system to be as quiet as it should have been.

During this experience, one feature I liked was the system restore process. The bootable USB flash drive that comes with the computer contains a custom recovery package that makes it easy to restore the system to factory settings. Simply boot from the drive and you’ll be done with a fresh Windows installation in minutes. No need to call tech support or flash disk images. Their tools do it all.

Beyond that, it’s exactly what you’d expect from an advanced, customizable gaming PC. Excellent gaming performance, clean and reliable aesthetic hardware that will last for years.

The Origin Neuron system I reviewed has a retail price of $3102. A look at comparable systems on PCPartPicker brings the total to around $2,400 including the additional RGB controllers (not listed). Exact numbers
