If I have the Note 20 and put it next to the S22 Ultra, I think it’s the same phone. But that’s actually a good thing, because the S22 Ultra is a fantastic looking phone.
When you hold it in your hand, it’s like a thin, slim flat display with very thin bezels, curved sides, and a tiny punch-hole front-facing camera.
The Ultra Display has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smooth scrolling and prevents screen tearing while gaming. You can set the display mode between Adaptive – which automatically changes to 120Hz depending on the content – Normal (60Hz). I think Samsung should have included the 120Hz option. Many people, like me, prefer to always set the refresh rate to 120Hz, even if it reduces battery life.
Regardless, the display looks great. Its viewing angles are wide, with vivid colors and sharp details. Any content will look good on it. I can really marvel at the display all day. The back of the S22 Ultra has a nice matte finish, making it less susceptible to fingerprints and smudges.

Unlike the Note 20 Ultra’s large protruding rear camera module, the S22 Ultra doesn’t have one. Only small lenses protrude from its back. It will be the slimmest camera module you’ve ever seen in a flagship smartphone.
The S22 Ultra features almost the same front-facing camera setup as the S21 Ultra. In other words, it has a similar front-facing 40MP punch-hole camera and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 108MP main wide-angle camera, a 10MP telephoto camera (3x optical zoom) and a 10MP rear camera system. The 108MP camera uses pixel-binning technology by default, which combines nine pixels into one to produce 12MP photos. 108MP high resolution mode must be activated to capture 108MP images.

To do this, you need to download and use the Expert Raw app. It’s like a camera app, but with more controls for shooting parameters like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.
The good news for the S22 Ultra is that its processor is Qualcomm’s latest flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which replaces Samsung’s underpowered Exynos processor that powered previous S-series models in Singapore. Accordingly, you should expect fast and smooth performance from the S22 Ultra.

In the GeekBench 5 benchmarking test, the S22 Ultra scored 1197 (single-core) and 3183 (multi-core). Although it was good, I expected better performance. In comparison, the Oppo Find X3 Pro scored 934 (single-core) and 3411 (multi-core), while the Xiaomi 11T Pro scored 810 (single-core) and 3331 (multi-core). Both have the same Snapdragon 888 chip.
The review unit only has 8GB of RAM, which explains the poor performance. However, neither can beat the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max’s scores of 1737 (single-core) and 4757 (multi-core).
However, apps launch quickly and there’s no lag in the operations I’ve tried. Not to mention, the stunning display makes everything look buttery smooth. For example, playing Pokemon Go on the S22 Ultra is an “accelerated” experience where you throw Pokeballs at virtual crystals.
This is true even when using the S22 Ultra’s built-in S Pen. It is said to have a lower 2.6 milliseconds compared to the previous 9 milliseconds. I think the difference is too small to notice.
Early Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Units May Be Having A Display Problem
I know everything will work smoothly from the moment you pull the S Pen out from under the phone. You can take notes, jot down ideas on the unlocked screen, highlight them, and quickly translate text. The S Pen is really responsive and there are a lot of brush types to choose from.
Unlike the S21 Ultra and Z Fold3, the S22 Ultra has a built-in cradle, eliminating the need for a case to store the S Pen. It’s more convenient.
My only problem is the lack of microSD card slot. In other words, there is no expandable storage. In Singapore, unlike some markets, there is no 1TB option. So if you have a lot of photos and videos like I do, you’ll find your storage limited in no time. Especially if you decide to shoot in RAW format.
Battery life is very good. With the display set to adaptive refresh rate, the S22 Ultra clocked 14 hours and 16 minutes on our standard video loop battery test.
