Update Galaxy S21 Ultra 5 G Price Review – MY TWO weeks with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra seem almost wasted. I received this powerful device for review in the middle of another Management Control (MCO) period when I was home.
I can’t use it to capture Putrajaya’s unique architecture or surprise families during Chinese New Year (which was actually canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The cell phone remained on my desk like a trapped bear, restrained and unconscious.

That seems bad, because the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a phone for creators. It has a great camera packed into a powerful device that’s perfect for work, play, and anything else that requires a smartphone. It has the features you need and features that feel different.

It’s actually a Galaxy S device in all its glory and more. It also feels familiar: more of an upgrade over last year’s S20 series than a new iteration. However, I think it’s a good thing.
Polishing the S20 Ultra’s rough edges and adding its own shine, the S21 Ultra shines on its own. As for the expensive, wallet-bleeding, it hardly disappoints.
But at the same time, the improvement only confirms what is missing from the S21 Ultra. There’s no microSD slot, no wireless charging, and headphones in the box.
Maybe some minor feature issues. But for a device that costs more than US$1,200 (RM5,000), what’s missing might seem like a stretch.

For example a RM5000 machine. The phone has an aluminum frame with Gorilla Glass Victus on the back and feels solid and durable. It’s heavier, which combined with the larger build makes the S21 Ultra a smartphone.
It’s not the most direct flag, but it looks good. I love the beautiful industrial look and my black one looks fun. The glass back, now frosted, feels good to the touch. The smartphone is very slippery.
The camera island has expanded with excellent lenses. Some may be confused. I think it’s a great attempt to highlight the camera and not hide it. The S21 Ultra has long been a flagship phone anyway. Big camera island sells more, IMHO.
The front part is more sensitive. The Galaxy S21 Ultra features a vibrant AMOLED 2X display that’s as competitive as it gets. The 6.8-inch 1,440p OLED with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate means you can set the S21 Ultra to display at 120Hz every time you touch the phone, dropping it to 60Hz a few seconds after your last interaction. .

It has an excellent screen that displays sharp, colorful and vivid images that are visible even in direct sunlight. The 120Hz refresh rate and HDR+ support is perfect for videos and games.
The original S20 Ultra was limited in that it only ran at a 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p resolution. Here on the S21 Ultra, it runs at 1440p.
The S21 Ultra comes with speaker settings. It works well – it’s loud, the sound is clear and the amount of bass is just right.
The S21 Ultra comes with one of the best charging systems out there. This is a quad-camera setup, starting with a 108MP main shooter and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. What really stands out here is that it has 10MP telephoto snappers that offer 3x and 10x optical zoom.

The telephoto lens adds a lot of versatility to an out-of-the-box camera setup (on most smartphone models), with four providing beautiful images at different settings.
The main camera produces incredible 12MP images that look good with lots of detail and rich colors. Of course, you can opt for a 108MP image.
In the end, I found that image quality tends to degrade, but you can manually downsize the large 108MP image for better, more detailed images.
As for ultra-wide images, they look good – colors look accurate and contrast is solid, although there isn’t much detail. The extra wide has autofocus so you can use it for close ups which is neat.

Both gardeners get great pictures and I can’t find a difference in quality between the two. Colors are accurate and contrast is good. The front-facing selfie camera is the same 40MP snapper as the S20 Ultra. It is very good, it gives a lot of details and special colors.
The cameras work well in both light and night conditions. The main camera delivers excellent night images with good sharpness and exposure. Shoot at night and you’ll get clearer pictures.
The wide-angle camera is great at night, although it doesn’t provide the best detail. Both also have good night shots with accurate colors and surprisingly low noise. Night works on all cameras, use it if possible: it improves photos.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also great for video. It supports 4K video recording at 60fps on all five cameras, including the selfie shooter. You can also choose 8K video at 24 frames per second with the main camera.

I haven’t shot much video with the S21 Ultra, but 4K@30fps video looks great to me, but 4K@60fps looks a bit sluggish to my eyes.
What’s great is Editor View, a feature that displays live images from all four cameras simultaneously so you can choose which one to use for recording. Perfect for finding the right camera for different situations without breaking the bank.
Those who care about specific components in their smartphones will be disappointed to know that the Malaysian version of the S21 Ultra has an Exynos 2100 SoC instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, hence the US version.
There are a lot of details to show their differences, but in everyday use, I think the Exynos 2100 provides the power and performance needed for all tasks and games.

The S21 Ultra uses a 5,000mAh battery, the same as its predecessor. Since the S21 Ultra comes with a 1440p display and 120Hz, I expected the battery life to be nothing short of top notch.
Surprisingly, the device offers long battery life – a full day of web browsing, a few games, some Netflix and lots of media streaming still keeps me going. About 30% of the juice was left at 11pm.
You can expect the S21 Ultra to be a production device. For example, with Samsung DeX, you can use your phone as a computer and connect a monitor and keyboard to it offline or via HDMI. Even more interestingly, the S21 Ultra is the first Galaxy S device to support the Samsung S Pen.
The S Pen has to be purchased separately, and the pen doesn’t have the same space on the device as it does on the Galaxy Note, but there are cases for it.
Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: The Cocktail Of Best Samsung Features Is Tasty, But Expensive
I tried using my Note10+’s S Pen on the S21 Ultra and it randomly stuck just by touching the device on the screen. The S21 Ultra supports basic S Pen functions, from screen-off memo to screen writing and screen translation. It doesn’t have Air Actions, which turns out to be shallow.
Adding the S Pen to the S21 Ultra is just the icing on a very long cake. This flagship is also priced at RM5,899 for the 512GB variant. As mentioned, the S21 Ultra does not support microSD expansion, and there is no charge for its inclusion.
The good news is that there are plenty of options: there’s 10W+ wireless charging, and the phone also has Wireless PowerShare, which lets you charge other devices wirelessly. But considering the small amount of money you pay for the device, these minor flaws are very noticeable.
But I guess that’s a small loss in the grand scheme of things. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is a true flagship – powerful, versatile and likely to last for years with the latest 5G. It’s hard to think of smartphones as “investments” when you see how quickly each feature trumps the other.
