Samsung kicked off 2021 with the highly anticipated launch of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It has proven to be a winner ever since.
Even now, with the Samsung Galaxy S22 series likely around the corner as things stand, it will be hard to beat last year’s lineup.

Shortly after the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in January, we got our hands on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which went gold with a 5-star rating, and was later crowned the best phone at the 2021 awards ceremony.
Shortly after, I tried the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, which I rated 4 stars. Both boasted impressive displays and feature-rich cameras, along with price tags to match.
Not everyone wants to shell out $1,000 or more for a phone, and I can’t blame them, especially when most people keep the phone for a few years before upgrading again.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 5G is the cheapest in the range, and while it may not be the leader of the pack, it was definitely worth a look this year. It’s a scaled-down version of the phone, ultimately making it cheaper and more accessible.

Outlining what’s new in the phone, the first thing to say is that the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G was several hundred dollars cheaper at launch than its predecessor, so of course some tweaks have been made to to make possible.

Samsung updated the look and feel of the phone, getting rid of the curved screen and standalone rear camera notch on the back of the Samsung Galaxy S20 and replacing it with a flat screen with a camera module integrated into the frame. I’m not convinced it actually looks better, I prefer the design of the Galaxy S20, but that’s up to you. Elsewhere, the screen resolution is down from before, from 1440 x 3200p (QHD) to 1080 x 2400p (FHD+), although Samsung has kept the 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support.
Other than that, the phones are largely the same. The camera hardware is almost the same, and even though they have different chipsets, they have similar processing power. Both phones use a 4,000mAh battery and 25W charging, and offer wireless charging. So it is debatable whether the newer device is an improvement over its predecessor.
As you’d expect from Samsung, the Galaxy S21 5G is a good-looking phone. Three camera lenses sit on the back, with the module seamlessly wrapping around the corner of the phone as if it were part of the frame rather than sticking out the back. It comes in three colors: gray, white, purple, and the version I tested is pink.
The glass back of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has been replaced with plastic on this phone. It feels less premium, but definitely makes it more durable in the long run. It has a glossy finish to enhance the overall look of the phone, but it’s still clear that Samsung has saved some money in this area.

One thing I really like about this phone is its size, the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G measures 15.17 x 7.12 x 0.79 cm and weighs 169 g, which fits my smaller hands well. This means it slides happily into pockets and doesn’t stick out like many other smartphones.
The flat 6.2-inch display has a punch-hole selfie camera on the top and super-slim bezels on the sides. Like other Samsung phones, there’s a USB-C port, volume controls and power button around the bezel. There’s still no 3.5mm headphone jack, which is just worth knowing if you’re still clinging to your old wired headphones.
The screen resolution of the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus has now been reduced to Full HD+, leaving the only phone in the range with a higher quality display, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which has a WQHD display. Full HD+ is enough to suit most people, it doesn’t give you the wow factor, but you have to make a sacrifice somewhere if you want a high-end smartphone at a mid-range price.
Even on this base version of the phone, you get the 120Hz refresh rate. Using the screen is a complete joy, it’s silky smooth to drag, tap and scroll. Netflix-like streaming videos have depth and plenty of color thanks to HDR10+ support, and with a peak brightness of 1,300 nits, you can see them even in bright sunlight.

The device can be unlocked with a password, facial recognition or the on-screen fingerprint sensor. Since masks cover my face when I’m out, I always go with fingerprints and Samsung is one of the best that works consistently and quickly every time.
The rear camera module includes a 12MP main lens, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 64MP telephoto lens, and a 10MP selfie camera on the front.
It’s the same as the Galaxy S20, but what’s new is a set of shooting modes, such as Zoom Lock, which stabilizes the shot while zooming in, or Director View, which takes videos from the front and rear cameras at the same time.

As you can see in the gallery above, daylight shots are clean and bright. They are sharp and well balanced, even if they are sometimes a bit oversaturated. Close-ups have a lot of intricate detail, while cityscapes aren’t too busy because there’s a lot of depth. It’s not nearly as accurate as the S21 Ultra, but it still doesn’t feel that difficult to shoot with this camera.
As for the zoom, shooting with Zoom Lock makes things much more stable beyond 20x zoom. The recordings aren’t really useful, but recording information beyond what the human eye can see is very useful and far more efficient than most phones offer.
Low-light shots are better than before on the Galaxy S20, a welcome improvement that you’ll really use if you’re the type to take a lot of photos when you’re out and about at night. .

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G packs an Exynos 2100 chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage. In some other international regions, the phone uses the Qualcomm SM8350 Snapdragon 888. Unlike previous generations of Galaxy phones, there is no MicroSD card slot for storage expansion.
Like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G scored Geekbench 5: 716 single-core and 3,464 multi-core, and 6,731 for OpenCL. It’s close to similarly priced devices like the OnePlus 8 Pro and even more expensive devices like the Oppo Find X3 Pro. In fact, it’s not that far off from the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra’s scores.
