It wasn’t that long ago that Samsung was the default here. And it’s not that Samsung doesn’t still make great phones, it’s just that their budget phones just haven’t been that exciting in the past few years. At least not compared to the competition.
Does the Galaxy M31 change anything? To answer that all-important question (for Samsung’s sake, if nothing else), read on.

And don’t let the “glass” in “glass” fool you, it’s still plastic and still prone to scratches, and it’s glossy, which makes the phone slippery to hold, especially for someone with fingers like me. On the other hand, the phone doesn’t look cheap, unlike its predecessor.
The color variant I use is Space Black, which is a little boring for my taste, to be honest. There’s no slope, it’s simple. If you don’t want black, your only option is Ocean Blue.
Despite the glass, the phone is still a bit heavy at 191 grams, but you have to live with that if you want a 6,000mAh battery.
A little tip, buy a phone case, because you will need one, and Samsung doesn’t give you one.

Moving on to the rear camera, which includes a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 5MP depth camera and a 5MP macro camera, the images taken in broad daylight are quite impressive. However, the colors looked washed out in some cases. Details and clarity were up to par.
Ultra-wide shots were also decent. In some cases I felt that the captured images were much warmer than the actual scene, but at least the image was not ugly or unrealistic.
I had high expectations for the camera because it took great shots during the day, but was poor at night. If you use the camera at night or even in low-light areas, you’ll get nothing but blurry pictures. There was no clarity and too much noise, I had to struggle to capture an image that didn’t look like I was running while shooting. And if you thought that the night mode could help, then you are wrong. Other than brightening the images, it didn’t do much. In my opinion, this is a red flag if you do a lot of low light photography.

You have an app drawer and switching between apps was pretty easy. I didn’t notice any lag while using the phone. I played several videos, games, and music, and I didn’t notice any lag or heating while doing this. It’s clear that the phone is perfect for your everyday tasks.
Games are another matter. I played RoadRash on my phone and it didn’t work very well. I wish Samsung had opted for a more powerful processor, like the Snapdragon 730G chipset that the Poco X2 offers at 15,999, for example. Realme 6 and Redmi Note 9 Pro also have more powerful hardware at this price.
The battery is the only headline-grabbing feature of the phone – 6,000 mAh is incredible. I’ve been using the phone for a day and a half and it still hasn’t fully discharged. One small (okay, not so small) trade-off you have to make is in terms of load times. You have to make do with a 15W charger. If you plan to be out and about for a while, it’s best to go into zen mode while you wait for the phone to fully charge. Plus, after charging, you won’t have to worry about battery life for quite some time.
The screen and single speaker are very nice though, and I think this phone can be a great choice for those who only consume a lot of video. In fact, few phones offer an OLED screen at this price, and if that’s something you care about, the M31 is a no-brainer. Combined with that massive battery, all-day Netflix binges can become yours.

There are several reasons to buy this phone, but to be fair, they are good. The OLED screen is great, as is the battery life. Performance is adequate for everyday tasks, and as long as you don’t intend to play a lot of games, there’s really no reason not to pick up this phone, aside from the camera performance, that is.
However, the reasons not to buy this phone are equally compelling. Phones like the Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max are more powerful, more exciting and offer better cameras. These phones also charge faster.
Back to my original question: Does the Galaxy M31 change anything for Samsung? I don’t think so.
