The Samsung Galaxy A51 was one of Samsung’s biggest mid-range products in 2020. It was the first time the Samsung A was available in the US, arriving as an affordable option for people who want a Samsung smartphone but don’t. pay $1,000 to get one.

With so much competition among them, is it a good choice for the price? Find out inside

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 for 6 days on Google Fi. Throughout the review, the phone was running One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material Samsung calls “Glastiki.” This gives it a better sound than the white plastic phones, but it doesn’t sound as high as the Samsung Galaxy S21 model. It’s still plastic after all, although I don’t mind the plastic on other phones at this price point. The phone is sleek but not slippery, and it’s light at just 158g. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The edge of the product is aluminum and feels very good. On the right, you’ll find the power button and volume rockers, with a USB-C port, speakers, and headphone jack below. The left side of the phone has a dual-SIM card tray, which can store two SIM cards and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double as a second slot to accommodate a SIM card or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a microSD card slot. It’s good to see.

I love the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s really different, and I appreciate phones with interesting colors. The example I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow-colored glow when hit by light from the right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which gives it a rainbow-like appearance.

The mobile phone speakers had a lot of volume but no bass information. I can’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, although the headphone jack is added.

For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has an amazing looking display. Most mid-range smartphones use LCDs instead of OLED, but Samsung has managed to pack in larger OLED screens with thinner pixels. This is a 1080p screen. Considering most phones come in 1080p by default, this didn’t bother me. Colors were clean and bright, which is similar to Samsung panels. It is good.

What is annoying about this display is the camera cutout in the middle of the phone. Although I usually like to cut the punch, Samsung decided to put a metal ring around the camera, which makes it more visible than it would be without the ring. This is not an error, but it forces you to see even if the display is turned off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

There is an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy A51. Unfortunately, fingerprint readers are slow and inaccurate. It took me about two seconds to register my fingerprints each time. Also, the accuracy seems to be around 50% when I use the device, which is very bad. You might be better off using pin unlock or 2D face unlock for a faster and more accurate solution.

With a mid-range Exynos chip and only 4GB of RAM as standard, we did not expect good performance on the Samsung Galaxy A51. After using the device for a while and setting our symptoms, we confirmed our fears.

I haven’t talked on the phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may feel slow opening apps and multitasking, and there is often stuttering when navigating the UI. The phone used 1.9GB of the available 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a bad sign. In our tests, we found that current versions of Android need about 6GB of RAM to run smoothly, and this was confirmed by this device.

In benchmarks, we saw a similar story. The phone lagged behind most devices in our testing. It has also fallen behind the mid-range since its launch, with Snapdragon 700 phones outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. See the results below.

Samsung Galaxy A51 Full Review: A Trendsetting Mid Range Smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a large 4,000mAh battery. With a low-powered CPU and limited RAM, you’d expect the device to get a killer battery life. And to be honest, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as good as it should have been. The call lasted about 29 hours, from 8AM one day to 1PM the next day. This isn’t as good as phones with larger batteries, but I’m glad it lasts a full day. I got four and a half hours of viewing time on this device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which is not very fast. Considering the first Google Pixel powered 18W in 2016, this feels a bit lazy in 2020. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 usually charge 25W these days, so I’d like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.

For a small phone for $400, the Galaxy A51 has good cameras and several of them can start. There is a 48mp main sensor that shoots 12 photos, as well as a wide-angle and macro lens, a depth sensor, and a 32MP front-facing camera.

Bright colors looked good on these cameras, although it looked like the images were slightly overexposed – perhaps to avoid fading the light. That being said, some camera systems can force shadows too much due to their dynamic range, which produces a gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones have been doing this, so I was surprised to see that the A51 doesn’t have it.

Colors were generally good, but the A51 tended to add more colors such as blues and greens. This would make the sky and plants explode, but it would make some of the images look cartoonish. Samsung has been doing this with its camera systems, but I’m not really surprised.

The depth sensor seems to help a bit, and I’m glad it works for more than just humans and animals. While the bokeh could look natural, object detection and cropping were fine. I was very surprised. The detection of hair is still difficult, but it is possible to create bokeh. The color also softens the skin more than I like.

The selfie camera was also good, with adjustable settings and color. The light was beautiful, although it was full of colors like green and blue.

The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to $399, and it could be worth it. You can easily get a phone for $300 if you shop around. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering with the phone.

With the A51, you’re getting a bigger screen, bigger projections, bigger cameras, and a record-setting head. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that guarantee support up to at least Android 12. However, although the build quality and performance are good, the limited functionality of this phone is the Achilles heel. And at a retail price of $349, the competition is very high.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s new processor and the best build quality for the same price, and the Google Pixel 4a has the best Android experience and an amazing camera for $350. And if you want to spend more money but not a thousand dollars, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full Galaxy S20 for $690 before it goes on sale. If you are looking for something similar with more power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is also out, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an upgraded version of the A51 with a faster chipset and a bigger battery.

If you like Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It maintains solid build quality and long battery life while moving to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You’ll pay more at $499, but the changes are worth it. Samsung hasn’t changed much on the weak camera front, but the move to 25W charging solves one of our biggest gripes with the Galaxy A51.
