On paper, this sounds attractive enough, but how does it actually stack up? The Motorola Moto G8 sets the bar at this price point, and unfortunately the Galaxy A12 is less than the sum of its parts.
Of course, it’s a matter of personal preference, but in our opinion, the Samsung Galaxy A12 is one of the better plastic phones you can buy.
A matte finish runs along the sides of the phone, and a diagonal pattern of shallow ridges covers the top of the back. The flat section at the bottom doesn’t detract from the overall look and creates a lovely two-tone look.
The four rear cameras are housed in a square module that appears narrower than similar setups on some other phones, but the hardware protrudes enough that the phone doesn’t lie flat on a table.

The inclusion of a headphone jack and microSD card slot is pleasing, and there’s also a downward-firing mono speaker on the bottom edge.
The volume buttons and power button, which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner, are placed on the right side of the phone and can all be accessed without having to adjust your grip.

The quad-camera setup of the Galaxy A12 certainly looks good. The 48-megapixel primary lens supported by a 5-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor gives the impression of a smartphone that takes photography seriously.
However, remember that this is a £200 device. Anyone expecting results to give tough competition to the Google Pixel 6 will be disappointed, but lower your expectations and you’ll be satisfied, at least under the best of lighting conditions. See the selection below:
It’s not as sharp in medium or dim light, where photos look almost uncontrollably noisy and blurry. There’s no Night Mode to save you, and effective HDR can only do so much.

Considering the otherwise generous selection of shooting options, which include Portrait, Food, Macro, and Pro modes, it’s a surprising omission.

So far, so good. Unfortunately, it’s in the performance department that Samsung has made some major compromises.
The Galaxy A12 is definitely the slowest smartphone I have ever used. It takes about a second for any and all transactions to be registered, which makes everything from opening an app, taking a photo, to composing a message, a frustrating and sometimes downright frustrating experience. Has it crashed? No, it just takes time.
The Galaxy A12 is so slow that no matter how many times the lag triggers everything, you won’t be able to touch the screen again, and you’ll find yourself convinced that you didn’t touch the screen right the first time. But most of the time you did. I’ve never experienced this level of lag on a phone.
But surprisingly, it is able to run demanding games like Asphalt 8 without any lag and there is no lag while streaming.

The Galaxy A12 runs Android 11, but Samsung’s OneUI skin means that’s it out of the box. Among the pre-loaded and in my case unwanted apps are Samsung’s own browser, Galaxy Shop, Samsung Global Goals and Facebook.
A question that encouraged me to use the suite of pre-installed productivity-oriented apps like OneDrive, Office, and Outlook was laughable given the A12’s slow performance.
Battery life is undoubtedly the most impressive feature of the Galaxy A12; The phone can easily last a day without fizzling out, even if you throw some streaming or gaming into the mix. Use it wisely and you may need to refill it every couple of days.
In actual use, an hour of Netflix streaming drained 7% of the battery; Half an hour of intense gaming (Asphalt 8) ate up 6%; And half an hour of light play (three) took another 2%. That’s two hours of entertainment for just 15% battery life. Music barely hurt, with an hour of online streaming using 2% of the A12’s battery, while an hour of playing downloaded music only drained 1% of the Galaxy A12’s battery.

However, recharging the Galaxy A12 is not that interesting. Using the charger included in the box, the phone took 1 hour 35 minutes to charge from 0% to 50% and 3 hours 25 minutes to fully charge.
A good cheap phone with a long battery: Samsung makes good phones at this end of the market too, and that helps with durability.
It’s hard to criticize a £169 smartphone that looks so good and lasts so long between charges, but the Galaxy A12’s lackluster performance is, well, poised. It’s so slow that it’s hard to recommend it to anyone.
The good news is that you can buy a powerful machine for the price without compromising on the user experience. The Motorola Moto G8 costs £179 and does everything the Galaxy A12 does, but without any of the lag.
