The Darksaber is unique in the Star Wars and Black Series weapon lineups. A traditional lightsaber has a cylindrical blade, but a darksaber is shaped like a real sword, with a flat, sharp tip. This eye-catching design helps stand out from the crowd. After first appearing in the animated Clone Wars series, we finally get to see what the live-action version looks like thanks to The Mandalorian.
The Mandalorian Darksaber Black Series Force FX Elite is a faithful recreation of a weapon we’ve seen Din Djarin use, and we’re very impressed with the way it’s executed here. As we’ve come to expect from weapons made thousands of years ago, this blade has some odd design choices and limitations, but is still an easy addition to our collection of the best lightsabers. A nice addition, you could say.
Hasbro Promo Package: The Black Series Darth Revan Force Fx Elite Lightsaber
Disney was kind enough to send us the Black Series Force FX Elite Darksaber, so we gave it a try. And by that, we mean, as usual, we mean dressing like a Mandalorian and walking around the house, trying not to drop any jewelry.
The Black Series is Hasbro’s premium line of Star Wars toys that includes action figures, collectibles, and lightsabers. You’ll pay a lot of credit for the Black Series name, but that price comes with quality. The handle is made almost entirely of metal, so it feels heavy in your hand.
As you’d expect from a Black series replica, the screen is very accurate. It’s been very difficult to find a good shot of the Darksaber’s grip in The Mandalorian, as it’s usually held in one hand when shown on screen, but we’ve looked at a few scenes and noticed no inconsistencies. The top cover of the handle has a gloss black finish, while the handle is matte black with dark gray embossed details. There are four lights (really one light and four viewports) embedded in the hilt just above where the blade starts, just like the ‘real’ thing.
You can switch between attaching the blade or not, so when you’re not preparing for a duel, you can simply carry the handle with you or hang it from your belt. Switching between the blade and handle-only version is a relatively simple process – all you need is an Allen key to remove the screw at the top of the handle. This is a great feature that expands the cosplay options for Saber. If you want to hang the knife from your belt, there’s also a small hole in the handle that you can thread a string or something else into, which is a nice touch.

When you’re not using the Darksaber to reclaim Mandalore, you can store it safely in the nifty vertical display stand that comes with it. Like the Saber, the mount is metal and gives it the same premium feel. A horizontal view option would be nice, but it really bugged us.
Darksaber has an impressive array of lighting and sound effects at its disposal, making it ideal for cosplay and staged shooting. Like some recent Black Series models such as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader Force FX Lightsabers, the Darksaber features progressive ignition lighting. This means that when you press the power-up button, the light moves over the blade to simulate the effect of the lightsaber icon flashing. Likewise, you also get progressive de-ignition when you turn it off. This effect looks great and helps sell the illusion, especially when accompanied by an ignition sound effect.
You get a set of situational lighting and sound effects. When the bar is turned on, there is an ambient hum. Swinging the blade produces a precise swoosh sound, while striking the darksaber against something triggers an unmistakably loud sound.

Star Wars The Black Series Force Fx Lightsabers
There are also some special effects you can trigger for cinematic shots and poses. Pressing the small button above the ignition button sounds the blaster’s deflection, with the blade flashing the hit signal. Holding down this button produces a liquid tip indicating the blade is cutting through solid material (like Qui-Gon Jinn cutting through a door in Phantom Menace).
Overall, the light and sound effects do a good job of replicating what we see from the Darksaber on screen. Our only real complaint is that you can see the individual LEDs on the blade as bright dots on its surface, which somewhat destroys the illusion that it’s a single glowing piece. We also found clash detection to be a bit sensitive – if you swing the saber with a certain amount of force and then stop before hitting anything, the momentum is sometimes enough to trigger a sound.
It’s worth noting that it has a clashing effect and you can do some light toys dueling with it, it’s not a toy or dueling sword. If you hit two of them repeatedly and with force, there’s a good chance you’ll damage the LEDs inside.

Dark Saber Light
The Darksaber comes with a rechargeable Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery. Hasbro’s website doesn’t make any bold claims about the Darksaber’s battery life, but we’ve been using it for over a week now and it’s still going strong on a single charge, so the battery life is more than adequate. If that’s what you’re looking for, head to a convention or cosplay event.
The only minor annoyance is that the battery pack has to be removed from the handle to recharge. You need to remove the pommel using an allen key and remove the battery then connect it using the included USB-C charger. This is probably to avoid the unsightly and inaccurate charging port on the handle, but we might prefer the external charging port to be camouflaged or covered up for convenience.
The Black Series Mandalorian Darksaber Force FX Elite Lightsaber has an MSRP of $278.99 and can be purchased at various retailers including Hasbro, Amazon, and Walmart.
The price is the same as the other new Black Series Lightsaber Force FX we reviewed recently, including the Obi-Wan and Darth Vader models. They certainly aren’t cheap, but we think they offer great value
