Fl Studio Review 2021: Is This The Right Daw For You?
Image-Line’s FL Studio DAW had a name change last version 20, which may have confused some users. v20 is actually v13, but changed to 20 to celebrate the DAW’s 20th birthday in 2018.
Should the latest version 21 be called FL Studio 25 after five years? But whatever, the DAW remains a free update no matter which version you buy (yes, even for those lucky v1 risk-takers back in 1998 called FruityLoops v1.0!). v21 has important updates to Workflow and some pretty cool additional plugins, but first let’s take an overview.
The original FruityLoops was all about creating loops and combining songs from them. FL Studio has always kept key compositional features in its own environments – mixing, arranging and looping, for example – meaning the overall feel is very different. However, the core running side is brilliant, intuitive and inspiring – retaining the ‘build on the fly’ ethos of those early days.
Version 21 has several workflow additions that help bring together overall package goals; They make it a bit more traditional in terms of DAW architecture, but still retain the great and unique feel that many (many) FL fans love.
Getting Started With Fl Studio 21: Everything You Need To Know
Some of the add-ons we’ll discuss are for different versions, which we’ll mention, but check out our FL Studio Versions Comparison section below to see what you’ll get in the four different versions.
As with most DAWs, there are many different stages you can purchase when it comes to FL Studio. The headlines are that the cheap Fruit version offers lots of instruments and effects – 84 out of 111 in total – but no audio recording. It’s a notable omission, but at just £85 it’s a decently priced introduction.
The Producer Edition (£164) adds this audio recording, two editors and seven plug-ins. We can see why this is said to be the ‘most popular’ version as it offers the best balance of everything for the money.
The Signature Edition adds a video player, an additional Newton audio editor and eight plug-ins for a not-so-small £255.
Fl Studio 20.8 Released
Finally, at the top of the heap is the All Plugins version with all 111 plugins. Above £150 – you pay a lot extra for these. We can still choose the producer option.
The first major upgrade is an improved browser that helps preview models better. It also comes with an improved search that lets you highlight your favorites so you can generally search faster, check more easily, and buy additional samples and third-party presets in a simpler way. It might not sound like much, but some DAWs take you out of context to try out new sounds, so it feels a little simpler workflow-wise.
A solid update to another DAW that has been with us for a surprisingly long time. A similar loop ethos.
The DAW and plug-in still works like a rack, but has an easy and fast workflow like FL Studio.

Another addition that works better than it sounds in practice is the ability to crossfade and mix individual audio files. You can add fades and volume changes to individual clips very quickly, without having to switch to another window like in some DAWs.
New plug-ins include multiband delay (up in the producer version), which easily splits delays across the bandwidth. LuxEVERB is a beautiful reverb with visualization that allows you to add envelopes to your reverb for various effects (eg snare ’80).
It is only in version one of all the plugins, but it might make you want to upgrade. The Vintage Pacer (Signature Up) is modeled after a 70s guitar pedal, so offers everything from a disco wah to a synth jar. And VFX Sequencer is a great plugin to get your filtered arpeggios. Other existing plugins have also had some significant facelifts.
While the plugin improvements are great, they aren’t included in every version, so our final thoughts are based on everything. And, really, a lot of v21 is about workflow improvements.
Fl Studio 21 Luxeverb
You get great options for adjusting screen color and projection tint, which will further help your workflow (although we don’t really have the white version). At that point, it’s a great update: smooth, very sophisticated and easy to use.
FL Studio is one of the most used DAWs for a very good reason and with its free upgrades it is a DAW switch.

In mid-2018, FL Studio crossed a threshold, and Mac users finally had the opportunity to try the native OS X version of FL Studio 20 (named after the 20th anniversary of the project). Now FL Studio has reached another milestone as Akai Professional has developed the first mass-market dedicated hardware controller for FL Studio, Fire.
Many fans of the software have been burning for a long time for a controller like this, and Fire now makes a great time for beatmakers who want to see what all the fuss is about with FL Studio. For those just starting to make music, the Fire and its included software rivals Native Instruments’ Machine Jam or Musk’s Micro as an affordable, laptop starter studio.
With its 64 multi-color, velocity-sensitive pads foundation, touch-sensitive encoders, and multiple operating modes, the Fire lets you create drum and melody patterns with a step sequencer, keyboard-style note input, and MPC-style input. Drum pads. Performance mode lets you set your patterns into clip slots in the software and launch/remix them in real-time from the Fire’s pads – color-coded by your choice.
Fl Studio 21 Review
Fire is well built and very easy to use. Once you become familiar with the various layers of control functions that come with its Alt and Shift buttons, you can comfortably get into a smooth creative flow. However, if you have never used FL Studio software before, there is still a learning curve to sort through specific methods, tools and menus. Check out the Image Line manual and third party video tutorials can help.
The Fire comes with FL Studio 20 Fruity Fire Edition, which is essentially the $99 low-tier business version of FL Studio, and includes lifetime free updates for the image line. While FL Studio works like any other digital audio workstation (DAW) software, it has its own character that still focuses on loops.
The program’s method is to create patterns in the Channel Rack and then arrange those patterns into songs in the Arrange window. The other major GUI element is the large form factor.
