The TCL 4K Series 6 with Google TV offers more features and better performance than the Roku-based Series 6, and all you’re missing is Apple AirPlay.

Hisense 75 Inch Series 8 Uled 4k Uhd Tv Review

This review is based on tests conducted on the 55R646, the 55-inch model in the series. Other than the difference in screen size, the $1,799.99 75-inch 75R646 looks similar and we expect similar performance.

TCL has always impressed us with its 6-series TVs, which offer solid performance at an affordable price. All of these TVs run exclusively on the Roku TV platform, which is an accessible and simple interface, but not the most feature-rich. TCL is now offering an alternative in the form of its Google TV 4K 6-Series TVs. The same price as the Roku TV 4K 6-Series 55-inch model (the 55-inch 55R646 that we tested sells for $949.99), and a solid offer. Support for apps and services, Google Cast screen mirroring, and hands-free Google Assistant (although they drop the Apple AirPlay support included with Roku TV). And it looks like they made some technical improvements on the Roku model, with stronger and slower contrast performance. The Hisense U8G series is brighter, but otherwise TCL’s Google TV 6 series offers the same great features at the same price, earning the Editors’ Choice award alongside the Hisense model.

Before moving forward, it’s worth noting that TCL has temporarily pulled its Google TV models from retail channels in response to reports of software instability. We did not encounter this issue during testing, and now that TCL has released software updates for the affected models, they are available in retail stores.

Physically, the Google-based 55R646 is almost identical to the Roku-based 55R635. The screen is framed by the same thin strip of brushed metal that runs along the sides and top, with the same strip along the bottom edge with the chrome TCL logo in the middle. It also stands on similar V-shaped gun legs, although they are slightly lower and have prominent rubber feet. The big clue that this is a Google TV model and not a Roku model is the square, dark gray, cloth cover on the bottom of the TV. This is a remote micro array, which provides hands-free access to the Google Assistant.

The cable plugs into the left side of the back of the TV, with all other connectors sitting on the right side, facing right. They include four HDMI ports (two 4K120, one eARC), two USB ports, a 3.5mm video jack, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an optical audio jack, an Ethernet port, and an antenna/cable connector. Below the port is a combination power/input button and a mute button to turn off the remote microphone.

In the distance was a long, thin black rectangle with lovely rounded edges. A large circular gray navigation pad sits near the top, with power, settings and Google Assistant buttons above it, as well as a pinhole microphone. The menu button sits at the bottom, with dedicated app buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, TCL Channel and YouTube below. The right edge of the remote contains the volume and mute buttons.

While most of TCL’s smart TVs use the Roku TV platform, the 55R646 uses Google TV for its interface. Google TV is a version of Android TV canceled on Hisense TVs, keeping all its functionality, with a menu system that focuses on content rather than selecting apps. All the big names in streaming are available, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Twitch, and YouTube. Google TV also supports Google Cast to mirror your Android smartphone or tablet, or Chrome browser from a computer, although it doesn’t support Apple AirPlay like Roku TVs. Roku does not support Google Cast).

Google TV also offers full access to the Google Assistant voice assistant, which you can use by simply saying “Hey Google”, thanks to the 55R646’s remote microphone array. It’s a good trend encouraged by Hisense and some Sony TVs in recent years, before the integration of the voice assistant almost only needed to speak on the remote. And, if you’re not comfortable with the microphone always listening to the alarm, you can simply mute the microphone with the switch on the back.

Google Assistant is still a very capable voice assistant, able to answer common questions like the weather and sports scores, find content to watch, and directly control your TV and compatible smart home devices. This can be extremely useful, especially with hands-free voice control.

TCL 55R646 is a 4K television with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It supports high dynamic range (HDR) content in HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and hybrid log gamma (HLG).

Like many TVs, the 55R646 has an adaptive mode that tries to automatically adjust picture settings based on what’s on display. This mode is automatically activated and used in addition to the picture mode you are currently using. We recommend turning off this feature when watching movies, to get the most accurate picture based on the director’s intentions, and turning it off during our tests.

The square represents the appropriate color range. Dots represent measured color levels. The closer each point is to the nearest square, the more accurate the color of the television.

The table above shows the color gamut of the 55R646 in movie mode with an SDR signal compared to the Rec.709 broadcast standard and with an HDR signal compared to the DCI-P3 digital cinema standard. The 55R646 performs admirably here, with sharp whites and balanced colors in SDR and HDR. The SDR image is near perfect, with greens a little softer, and yellows and magentas a little warmer, a (very slight) complaint. The HDR image is also excellent, covering almost the entire DCI-P3 color space despite the undersaturated greens and yellows. All the colors are properly balanced and are not significantly distorted in any direction, apart from blue-blue with a little green, blue, magenta, red and yellow.

Looks great on the 55R646. The green of the plant and the blue water look bright and natural, with a rich variety of subtle colors. Fine details such as feathers and bark look sharp, both in direct sunlight and in the shade.

Equally impressive on the 55R646, with the red color of Deadpool’s suit looking bright and accurate in the film’s early cover scenes. The flames in the burning lab fight look bright and prominent, while the shadow detail in the same frame is still visible without looking washed out.

Shows the excellent difference of 55R646. The cut and shape of the black dress can be clearly seen and remain dark even with the bright white of the balloons, lights and shirts in the same frame. Skin tones look natural against black and white, and the splash of color in scenes comes out well.

The 55R646 is a 120Hz TV that supports variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low acceleration mode (ALLM), which should appeal to gamers. However, it does not have AMD FreeSync like the Hisense U7G and U8G, or Nvidia G-Sync like the LG C1P (with FreeSync), something to keep in mind if you want to connect a PC to it.
