Update Entry Level Cameras Review – Canon has recently expanded its range of mirrorless cameras with the Canon EOS R8. It offers a new entry-level full-frame camera body that replaces the Canon EOS RP and R, both of which were released more than three years ago.
The EOS R8 couldn’t have come at a better time. Post-Covid travel is on the rise, and the demand for an affordable camera system is likely to grow with it.

A great entry-level camera will also help Canon (belatedly) build its user base for its RF Mount lens system to dominate the mirrorless market.

From a recent media event in Singapore, I can say that the EOS R8 feels good in the hand. The camera has a large enough grip to hold the camera firmly, especially when you mount a large, heavy lens on the front.
The buttons and dials are close to the thumb, so changing settings can be relatively quick. The presence of the front panel also helps to quickly adjust the aperture settings.
Another thing to note is that there is no lock on the graduated screen. This means that I have no problems when shooting, although the settings can still be changed inadvertently when the camera is in the bag. This is something to watch out for.

The EOS R8 is a very light full-frame camera weighing only 461 grams with battery. This camera is also lighter than the EOS RP, which weighs 485 grams. The full-frame sensor of the new camera has 24.2 million pixels, which is enough for most landscapes, macros and portraits.
If action or sports photography is your hobby, the EOS R8 can record six frames per second using the electronic front curtain or 40 frames per second with the electronic shutter.
Price considerations may have led Canon to abandon the mechanical shutter altogether and replace it with an electronic system that resembles the mechanical shutter on more expensive cameras.

This change may not affect most users, but those familiar with second curtain or rear sync shutter to achieve certain lighting effects will regret giving up such a shutter mode.
Although the EOS R8 is an entry-level camera, having a camera that can record 4K resolution at 60p (60fps) without cropping is an improvement over many older cameras.
This means that the camera can fully use the capabilities of the lens without adding a crop factor and using all the pixels on the sensor.

Canon also allowed the camera to shoot in 4K 30p with no recording time limits. However, to ensure the camera doesn’t overheat, a 20 minute limit applies when shooting at high frame rates.

There are other video-centric features that video content creators will find useful. A red frame capture indicator on the screen shows the user that the camera is recording video.
There is also focus breathing correction, where the camera maintains the size of the subject even when the user zooms in or out of the frame. In addition, false colors and zebras are indicators on the viewer’s screen that help correct exposure or emphasis.

The most useful feature is the support for the USB video/audio class. Users can stream Full HD video directly to a laptop or PC for conference calls and live streaming on Facebook or Instagram via the USB cable. Yes, like a webcam but with better image quality.
While doing a quick run, I noticed that the focus system on the EOS R8 is significantly faster than the much older EOS R and RP. In particular, the new camera uses the same AF system as the EOS R6 II.
It quickly stops on the eye of the main subject in the frame, although the lack of a joystick makes it more difficult for me to move the focus box on the subject if the camera cannot detect the subject. The fastest way is to use the center focus box to close the subject and reframe.

Your Entry Level Camera Is Not Good Enough — The Beginner Photography Podcast
The new camera comes as a kit with the new Canon 24-50mm f4.5-6.3 lens. However, I prefer to have the 24-105mm f4, which is optically superior and does not require unlocking the lens before use (although it is heavier).
The bad news is that Canon still doesn’t have a kit lens starting at 20mm. This focal length is useful for vlogging, as it gives you a wider field of view when holding the camera at arm’s length.
The EOS R8 will retail for US$1,499 (S$1,990) in the US, although pricing and availability in Singapore are yet to be confirmed.
This is a reasonable price for a good mirrorless camera. It encourages smartphone users to take their photos and videos seriously with an RF-based full-frame camera system.

The ZV-1F is designed for beginner bloggers and creators who want something better than iPhone or Android, but don’t want to spend a fortune or need the extra features you can find in the ZV-1.
If you’re looking to produce video and only video, the Sony ZV-1F is better than an iPhone or Android smartphone.
It’s better in low light, the different video settings are easier to manage, it has manual video settings if needed, and the detailed LCD screen means you can see well when filming, which you can’t when using the rear camera.
