Let’s be clear from the start: The LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid is not a toy for children. It’s recommended for ages 18+ because of the complexity, and if you let your kids play, you’ll notice that the attachments reattach and straighten your hands. And probably looking for his head. It’s aimed at collectors who enjoy looking at beautiful Lego sets, and this is reflected in everything from the box, to the design aesthetic, to the way it’s built.
Another thing worth pointing out right now is that the Lego Imperial Probe Droid is pretty awesome. While not an icon of the Star Wars universe, fans of the original trilogy are familiar with it, and it translates very well to the Lego format. It’s a fun assembly challenge, and while it’s not child’s play, you can work with your young builder to create some of the model’s six parts. As always, we designed the Probe Droid with our five-year-old sidekick to find out how suitable it is for both young children and adults. Yes, even if it says 18+ on the box, we like to apply the same testing procedure to all our kits.
The LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid (model number 75306) has six stages and includes a small sticker sheet. You start by building an icy base, a small plaque, then the body, mounts, legs, arms and finally the head. The base and body are fairly large blocks of Lego, so things start out easy. While this reviewer was building it with his son, he was able to hold these first few items on his own (with a little guidance).
After 4-6 bags, things get more complicated when you get arms, legs and finally the head. They are small and complex things that can be easily broken and separated. They hang from the probe droid’s body and, once attached, can be rotated slightly. They look great, but you can’t play with them too much because they come off easily. We’ve criticized Lego X-Wing for being flimsy, but that’s less of an issue here, as it’s aimed at collectors, not kids, so you can expect it to handle a lot; It is more affordable.

Each attachment feels different and there are very few repetitive processes, which is unusual for a Lego build of this scale. They’re all logically placed on the body, and each bag adds a new element to the droid, so it’s fun to watch your progress. Finally, while the head is pleasingly complex, it looks great when finished, and you get real satisfaction and accomplishment when you attach it to the droid body to complete your build. The kit is only 683 pieces and pales in comparison to larger kits like the Star Destroyer, but it is a very interesting model to build and there are no boring steps to build.
The LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid took us a total of three hours to complete, but you can build it a little faster if you make your own. But that’s not the point of Lego, is it?
Comparing this Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid to the movie version, we can say that it is quite successful. It achieves great detail with very simple Lego pieces and complex shapes but never looks too clunky or artificial. It is a stunningly beautiful piece of lego that is so beautifully designed and the details are so beautiful to look at and admire.
The 100-page instruction booklet is clear and easy to follow (we love how the “new parts” are highlighted in red at each step), and the construction process is logical and never rushed. There are some design choices around the legs and arms that we find odd, but in the end they hold together well.

We really enjoyed building the Lego Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid. It’s not much of a game, and while you won’t be able to share the experience with the kids, the build is varied, challenging and satisfying. Other than that, at $60, we think it’s good value for money. You will spend a lot of time creating and in the end you will have a wonderful authentic design to admire. We can’t help but mention how we designed our collective hat.
Anyone looking for a simple, kid-friendly Lego model should look elsewhere. Not only is it a complex structure with many small parts, it is also unbearable to play. The legs and appendages are delicate and easy to pull out, but the rest is sturdy enough. While this isn’t the most popular Star Wars Lego collection, fans of the original trilogy will definitely appreciate it.
The Lego Imperial Probe Droid is part of the display, so if you’re looking for something similar, you can check out some existing helmet designs. The Darth Vader helmet is cool, if a little off-color, and has a suggested retail price of $69. There are other hats as well, but this one is the most popular, so it’s perfect for collectors.

If you want another screen model, we’ll probably get The Child (from The Mandalorian) in Lego. It’s a cool set and the hottest set of 2021, but it’s more for collectors than young builders who want to play with Lego. You can get it retail for $79 and it comes with 1073 pieces, so it will take some time to complete.

Announcement for fans of LEGO BrickHeadz miniatures: The 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog and 40628 Miles “Tails” prover sets will be available from September 1, 2023 for a retail price of €9.99 each.
