The creative storytelling minds that wrote A Quiet Place come from their latest thriller, 65. Scott Beck and Brian Woods have made a huge impact in Hollywood. From A Quiet Place and its sequels to The Haunt, The Boogeyman and 65, they have become a “dream team” of writer/directors whose work is usually met with approval. However, success is a double-edged sword because after A Quit Place was critically acclaimed and made a lot of money at the box office, expectations were obviously high to continue delivering quality films. Of course, since then they have had losses and losses, with the last 65 more.

Pilot Mills (Adam Driver; Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens) takes a two-year mission into space to pay for his daughter’s treatment. However, asteroids damage the spacecraft during the mission and it is destroyed after crash landing on an unknown planet. All passengers on board are killed in the crash, except for a teenage girl named Crow (Ariana Greenblatt; Avengers: Infinity War), who reminds Mills of his own daughter. When the Mills discover a working escape pod, they begin their journey to find it, but there are obstacles in their way, prehistoric creatures.

Driver is always great no matter what role he plays, whether it’s piloting a spaceship with a dinosaur or Darth Vader’s grandson struggling with the power and inner conflict that war within him. Since the 65-year-old doesn’t have a ton of dialogue, he has to rely on his facial expressions and physicality to tell different parts of the story. Greenblatt is the perfect choice to opposite Driver, as he has been in several productions and is nominated to appear in “Young Hollywood.”

When it comes to visuals and special effects in 65, Dolby Vision is a mixed blessing. The picture is excellent with clean lines and sharp details. Unfortunately, the high quality also shows the flaws of the CGI dinosaurs, which can be quite noticeable.

Fortunately, Dolby Atmos audio doesn’t suffer the same fate. The ambient sounds are layered and powerful, and the sounds of dinosaurs come at the viewer from every direction. Dialogue also sounds solid, with most of it sitting comfortably on the front speakers. While some of the visuals and sounds aren’t the best, overall a 4K disc offers more visuals and excitement than a Blu-ray disc.

65 has all the elements to be a great movie…strong script, good video and audio quality, great cast and experienced directors…but the movie never seems to come together. It’s easy to tell that the 65 is a Back/Woods creation and production, as it has as much silence as dialogue and ambient sounds. Unfortunately, when key parts are identified, the story falls apart. Honestly, in less than 90 minutes, how many times can the audience watch the characters run and defend themselves against dinosaurs and the harsh landscape?

And if all that isn’t enough, Mills and Crow must try to reach the escape beam and get off the planet before a giant meteorite hits Earth and destroys everything. The idea that life existed on other planets that collided with the prehistoric Earth is both intriguing and unimaginable.

The Goonies’ Movie And 4k/blu Ray Review

We wrap up the week here at Digital Bits with three additional record reviews and some more release news. First, these reviews…

The team kicks things off by watching Jacques Tourneur’s 1964 horror comedy classic Comedy of Terrors starring Vincent Price, Boris Karloff and Peter Laurie. It will be on Blu-ray on August 31st. Kino Larber from Studio Classics.

Dennis also offered his thoughts on Frank Perry’s Mummy Dearest, which was recently released as a new Paramount Presents Blu-ray.

And Stephen is also out today on Blu-ray with Robert Aldrich’s The Choirboys (1977) from Kino Lorber’s studio classic.

The Last Of Us: The Complete First Season (bilingual)

Now for release news, the British Film Institute has just surprised us all by announcing its first 4K Ultra HD release, and it’s a good one: Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957). You will see the cover image there on the right. [Read here…]

The album will be sold on 18.10. And it’s currently available for pre-order here in the BFI shop, but please note that due to distribution rights issues, it’s only available in the UK (and related territories). It’s possible that the title might also appear on Amazon UK and Zavvi UK, but there’s no sign of that yet. Still, it’s great to see another boutique distributor getting into the physical UHD game.

Speaking of 4K Ultra HD, retail sources have revealed that Paramount’s second Miramax title to release on 10/19 is Robert Rodriguez’s Dusk Tail Dawn (1996) after Scream (on 10/19). Expect it to arrive tentatively on 10/26. (We’ll let you know when it’s officially announced and available for pre-order on Amazon.)

Coming in the fourth quarter of this year. I have to emphasize, because a lot of production work depends on smoothness and the standard has avoided delaying things in the past. This is definitely one of those cases where I’m happy to let them do their thing and announce great 4K titles without people like me trying to make it harder by doing some titles that they is working So before you start asking me about specific titles, I won’t say anything about it yet. But fingers crossed, the company will finally make the jump to 4K before the end of the year.

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Movie And 4k/blu Ray Review

Catalog movies that have been digitally upscaled to 4K and may never see the light of day on physical discs. So keep an eye open for such titles if you are a digital subscriber.

Also on the topic of 4K streaming this afternoon, don’t forget that James Gunn’s Suicide Squad is available today (and for the next month) on HBO Max in 4K with Dolby Vision. And yes, the title is coming to physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in a few months from Warner Bros. From Home Entertainment (our latest street date information is at the end of October).
