Update Diary 2021 To 2022 Review – For the last 4.5 years of keeping a Bullet Journal, I journal until I run out of pages and rarely coincide with a new year, but the -different year. With only a handful of pages left for 2021, I’m going over my current bullet journal and planning my 8th.
Regardless of how new the journal is or not, I always take time to reflect on my year before jumping into the next. To prepare for the new year, I like to do a compilation page called “New Year’s Review” where I put out a page and list what worked and what didn’t work in the journal for that year.

After I make this collection page, I start at the beginning of my journal and go through each page. I’ll take a moment to review and note if the pages worked or not. Not every site I review makes it to my list. I usually write the margins – it worked well and I want to keep it, or it didn’t work at all and I don’t have to try again. Usually it was a quick list that worked. What didn’t work, I like to take a moment and explain why it didn’t work. Sometimes I find myself turning on the Instagram tool and trying to make pages that I think people will like, or recreating pages that I see and think are are good ideas that I would not normally keep to myself. They all come with good intentions, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best for me – but you never know until you try.

Here’s everything I’ll take with me to my new journal (or to a new year if I’ve been in the same journal).
What didn’t work doesn’t always mean it was a waste or a disaster. Sometimes you may need to change it to make it better in the future. For example, I’ll still keep notes and daily tasks in my journal – but for long-term projects, I’ll create a separate collection to keep my notes together. Recognizing and reflecting on this will help you think through the problem and move towards another solution.
I have pages in my stash that have worked well for me, but I may not need them in my next issue. For example, between January and October of this year, I held a job where I had direct reports. I have dedicated a page to everyone for personal conversations. I won’t be reporting directly in my new role, so these 1:1 person-to-person pages won’t be necessary. They worked for me then, but now I don’t need them. I’m making mental notes on these pages because things change and I may need something like this in the future.
Before I take the next step and start setting up my journal, I like to read The Bullet Journal Method again. This is not a plugin for the book, just because I am writing this here. I really like going back and re-reading all or part of the book to refresh my mind. It’s easy to get lost in your mind or in what you see on the internet. Sometimes I just need to update the basic collection pages or how I can be more intentional.

Now that I have this collection page and my reflections, written or mental notes, I can start thinking about starting my new bullet journal. My next step is to start with my basic link pages (table of contents, future issue, monthly review, daily/or weekly) and then start the link pages that I need to add marked on my annual reflection sheet. Not every idea becomes a collection site. Some just remind me of myself. For example, I found that the weekly review helped me plan my work and projects, but I needed the daily, unlimited space for quick journaling and note-taking. This will appear in my weekly page preferences and throughout the year.
I have always said that your bullet journal should work for you, not for you. If you ever feel stressed about scheduling shots, it’s time to take a step back. Don’t stop, take a moment to remember why you are doing this. Simple meditations are great ways to breathe and think about what’s going on in your approach. Take a step back and look at your bullet journal at this peak to learn how to rebalance yourself and be successful in the new year and/or your new journal, or any time of the year .
